As many people know, global temperatures are going through the roof. It is a matter of record that again this year has been the hottest ever since monitoring began, and you have to ask where it will all end? Will next year be hotter as the temperatures continue to rise?

There can be little doubt that mankind is responsible for these changes in our atmosphere, for we have been polluting it ever since the turn of the century, and year on year it gets worse. With the increase in transport and factories over the last fifty years we have steadily been pumping more and more CO2 into the atmosphere than ever before, and year on year it is increasing. It is common sense that at some time in the future there must come a breaking point, at which time people across the world will start dying en masse.

We have had Climate Change Conferences attended by all the major nations in the world, but it would seem that although agreements have been reached, nothing really changes. The politicians are all ready to sign agreements, but when it comes to implementing them very little happens.

Traffic Jam

Traffic Jam

Climate conferences have been held annually ever since 1995, but when you look at the world outside your window, really nothing has changed. The number of polluting vehicles on our roads has not decreased, as it needs to do, but has in fact increased to well over a billion world wide. As people in places like China and India become more affluent, this number will increase even more.

Say what you like, but this number of vehicles on our roads is pushing so much pollution into the air that our Earth just cannot handle it any more. The same can be said for factories, especially in places like China and India that are not as technically advanced as the West.

This increased pollution of our atmosphere is leading to huge areas of drought in many countries, along with  flash flooding, even hurricanes and typhoons in areas of the world where such things have been unheard of in the past. It must make you wonder what life will be like in twenty years time if this keeps up.

To top all this off, we are destroying the only things they can tip the balance the other way, like the sea and forests and the soil.

Amazon Destruction

Amazon Destruction

When I was a youngster fishing fleets would go out and catch maybe a half ton of fish, but these days the huge vessels we have today catch 100 tons every time they lower the nets. In effect we are raping our seas of all marine life. On top of that we are steadily destroying the forests of the world, like the Amazon and many others.

What we don’t care about is that these things are the real life-blood of our planet, for they provide the oxygen that we breathe that keeps us alive. They absorb the CO2 that we put into the atmosphere and give us oxygen in return. Whatever you may think, nature is finely balanced, but so long as we continue to destroy that which gives us life you can be sure that eventually humanity will disappear from the planet. These days are approaching rapidly in historical terms because we are not doing enough to correct the balance.

Health_effects_of_pollutionIf mankind is to survive we have to make some very hard choices, but most people are not willing to do this because, at the moment, it doesn’t affect them. But you should think of your children and their children, for what sort of world are we going to give them? Will they be wearing a gas mask all day because the levels of pollution are so high? Will people be dying in their hundreds of thousands from pollution right, left and centre? What chance will your grand-children have to live a normal life?

These are all questions we must ask ourselves in this day and age, for if we are to ensure they have a good life then we need to do something now to stop the rot!

Pollution Levels

Pollution Levels

Governments must start taking the measures needed to stop the destruction of our home planet even though they will be unpopular with the people. To begin with they could restrict families to one car only which would greatly reduce the number of polluting cars on our roads. They can do this by improving bus and train services in towns and cities so it is no longer necessary to drive to work.

Earth In Big Trouble

Earth In Big Trouble

Some people seem to think that the electric car is one of the great solutions to our contamination problems, but we have to think logically about this. If everyone drove around in electric cars, which are non-polluting,  it would put a totally unsustainable load on power generating plants, which would be unable to cope.

Governments need to stop the destruction of forests world-wide, and ensure that new trees are planted wherever possible. Were we to have hundreds of new forests across the world this would go a long way to replenishing the oxygen that we all need.

Modern Trawler

Modern Trawler

Also we need to stop the literal rape and pollution of the seas for they too provide us with oxygen. Fish species are dying out at an unprecedented rate, and if we keep on the way we are going there will be none left. I remember when I was young that some cod were caught that were eight or ten feet long, but now you are lucky if they are four feet long. We are killing them off before they have a chance to grow.

Another thing we need to change is the steady destruction of the soil that is needed to grow crops to feed us. We are producing so much farm produce that we have destroyed the natural elements in the soil that allow crops to grow healthily. Farmers have for decades been spraying crops and adding synthetic nutrients to the soil in order to get crops to grow.

Air Pollution In The Future

Air Pollution In The Future

These chemicals are steadily poisoning our food and creating all sorts of sicknesses within the human body. They are slowly but steadily destroying the ground that we need to sustain us with food. Much of it also ends up in streams and rivers and finds its way eventually to the sea.

There can be little doubt that if mankind is to survive for another century, there must be some major changes in the way we live and care for our environment, and everyone must do their bit, and that includes you and me!

The Flying Farce

Posted in America, Britain, Europe, Insanity, Modern World, News, UK, USA with tags , , , , on 01/11/2013 by floroy1942

I read a report today that we can expect flying cars to take off within the next few years. The report indicates that this could be the mode of travel for many in the future, but to be honest, I doubt it.

The Future?

The Future?

A vehicle of this type would need not only certification from the body governing aircraft, but also from those who regulate vehicles on the road, but manufacturers seem to think they can satisfy both requirements. At the moment there are such vehicles but they are still restricted to taking off from airports and not from the road.

Companies are currently developing flying cars that will take off vertically, presumably from just about anywhere, but that is a few years down the line. It will be strange to see cars zipping along the highway with a set of wings folded down each side, but even stranger to see these wings unfold and then for it to take off on the road ahead. Even scarier would be a situation where you are driving down a road and see one land in front of you!

Inside A Flying Car

Inside A Flying Car

What gets me about this whole scenario is the inevitable chaos we can expect if this sort of thing becomes the norm in the future. Can you seriously imagine cars taking off and landing on roads and zipping across the sky like a flock of out of control birds? I sure as hell can’t. We have enough chaos on the roads as it is what with careless drivers, drunken drivers, speeding drivers and those on drugs. Every day of the week there are hundreds of thousands of crashes across the world and now they want to give these people the opportunity to fly! The mind boggles!

Look to the sky anywhere in the future, and especially in or near big cities, and we would probably have the significant possibility of mid-air collisions and could find these things dropping out of the sky like pigeon excrement! Its one thing to say we would have traffic lanes and avoidance systems built in, but they are not infallible with an idiot behind the wheel. A crash on the road gives you at least a reasonable possibility of surviving, but from hundreds of feet in the air, no chance! And what about those underneath who are going merrily on their way only to have some idiot drop on top of them. For me, I have to say that we have more than enough problems on the roads without adding the chaos to the skies above us.

City Traffic Of The Future?

City Traffic Of The Future?

I too have seen the sci-fi movies where flying vehicles move around a city in orderly fashion in specific lanes, but does anyone really think such a thing will work in practice with the crazy individuals we see behind the wheel of a car these days? I for one don’t hold out much hope, plus the fact that those vehicles usually operate on an anti-gravity system which is a lot different than relying on a propeller.

It may be possible that a few of the rich and super rich will avail themselves of this new phenomena but hopefully it will never get into the hands of ordinary people. Looking at the price quoted by one company, Terrafugia, their Transition model will be available for the princely price of a mere $280,000 (£173,000) which is only a little less than what you would pay for a Cessna Skyhawk fixed-wing plane, so the chances are slim at best. The company has already received around 100 orders for the new craft, so when they begin to roll off the production line, it might be a good idea to keep one eye on the sky just in case some pilot/driver has had one too many, if you know what I mean.

Crazy? You Couldn’t Make It Up! Season 1 Episode 6

Idiots abound everywhere, and sometimes they get in the news. The last week or so has seen yet another crop of weird stories which highlight the silliness of people and institutions.

The British Government has taken one more step down the road to stupidity with the recent Equality Act. Harriet Harmon’s Bill now decrees that it is an offence to ‘imply that women are not as strong as men’. For this reason, gym instructors have been told that if they warn a woman not to lift weights too heavy for her they can be prosecuted under the equality law because it insinuates women are not as strong as men.

Most gym instructors will give advice to both men and women during activities like weight lifting, for the simple reason they wish to prevent their clients from ‘over-doing’ it and injuring themselves. So if this will be considered sexual discrimination in the future, I wonder what will happen when someone does hurt themselves? Could it mean the complainant sues Harriet Harmon or the gym? A tricky situation for which we will have to wait an answer!!!

As a policeman, especially in the traffic department, you see some strange happenings on the roads. Officers in Weymouth in Dorset England were amazed to see a car being driven through a busy town with the bonnet (hood) fully up blocking the windscreen. When they pulled over the vehicle they found a 53 year-old woman in the driver seat who said her bonnet was faulty and she was on the way to get it fixed.

She was somewhat indignant when the officer suggested she could not see the road and told him she had been looking through the slit between the raised bonnet and the bottom of the windscreen. What a shame she is too old for the Army, she would make a fine tank driver!!!

The same Force pulled over a man using his elbows to steer his car while he rolled a cigarette and read from a clipboard he had on the wheel, and also a woman with three children on the back seat without seat belts. When asked by the officers why she did not have the children wearing seat belts she replied they were ‘not her children’. I can’t quite make up my mind if that is extremely callous, or stupid. Probably both!!!

A company called Proactol Ltd is advertising for a professional ‘couch potato’ with a salary of £23,750 per annum! Really! The job entails sitting all day long eating junk food and watching TV and video’s. The successful applicant will be required to eat Indian ‘take-away’, Macdonalds meals, pizza, fish and chips and other fatty foods for the their period of employment, plus take the company’s product Proactol. You would essentially be a lab-rat for the scientists who are developing Proactol which they hope will absorb 30% of your daily fat intake. I can imagine the applicants will be lining up around the block, and the next one!!!!

Children are without doubt one of the best sources of amusement, and a short time ago they proved it yet again. One thousand children were polled to mark the start of the National Science and Engineering Week in the UK a couple of weeks ago and were asked questions like ‘Who invented the telephone’. Many thought the Queen invented the telephone, that Charles Darwin discovered fire and Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story) was the first man on the moon.

The minds of children are amazing and it makes me wonder who they think invented the aeroplane? Probably Richard Branson!!!

Political correctness is forever in the news these days, usually for something stupid. Like the man at Gatwick Airport who was asked to remove his T shirt by a security guard because the slogan on it may be considered threatening. A compromise was reached when the man turned it inside out. The words on his T shirt; ‘Freedom or die! So the next time you buy a T shirt, take into consideration the feelings of other air passengers and do not buy one that says; Boom!!!

A survey has been carried out among local councils that are gradually changing English street names to reflect current environmental concerns and ethnic diversity. Names like Acacia Street and making way for new names like Eco Avenue, Euro Close and Sustainability Avenue. Among the ethnic diversity names now in use are Masjid Lane (Muslim for mosque), Khadija Walk (prophet Mohammeds first wife). The list goes on and on. I suppose before long streets where the majority of dwellers are ethnic English will be called ‘Infidel’ Street!!!

Another ‘Health and Safety’ cock-up was unearthed by the media at Manor School in Melksham last week when a 5 year-old boy climbed a 20ft tree during the morning break but was left there by the school staff because they would be breaking H & S rules if they helped him down! In accordance with guidelines, they retired to the school building and ‘observed him from a distance in case they distracted him and caused him to fall’. The child was rescued some 45 mins later by a woman who happened to be passing the school and saw him up the tree. The amazing thing is, when she went into the school with the child, instead of thanking her for her assistance the headmaster called the police charging her with trespassing! It would appear we have now reached the situation where the patients run the mental asylum!!!

Until next time, and remember, there are still sane people in the world, they are just harder to find!

Road Trains – Will They Work?

Posted in Britain, England, Environment, Europe, Germany, Modern World, Spain, Traffic, Travel, UK, USA with tags , , , on 25/11/2009 by floroy1942

Research is being done to develope a wireless controlled system for forming so-called ‘Road Trains’ on European roads. The general idea is for vehicles to drive within a metre or two of each other along motorways in the future, thus forming a ‘train’. When joining a train, you would hand over complete control of your car to the lead vehicle, who would then make decisions for the entire ‘train’. It is thought this could improve traffic flow on major roads.

Your car would be controlled by radio signals from the lead vehicle, with a form of radar to maintain seperation. While all this is going on you, the driver, could be reading the newspaper or playing games on your laptop.

It may sound like a good idea, but could it possibly work? People being what they are, it may work to some degree, but you see on the road today everyone likes to travel at a different speed to everyone else. For many people there is also the question of trust in the system. Pilotless passenger aircraft are a reality, but who would travel in one? People like to be ‘in control’.

I see road trains every day when I drive on the motorway in Spain because the Spanish like to drive in the middle lane of a three lane highway. Consequently everyone is squeezed into the outside lane trying to overtake. It is a common sight to see the outside lane nose-to-tail, a smattering of cars in the middle lane, and almost nothing on the inside lane except the occasional truck. The story is similar for a two lane motorway, everyone is in the outside lane trying to overtake the car in front.

So this begs the question, would road trains solve this problem? It may do if there are dedicated lanes for this traffic, but otherwise, no! It will also depend on the speed of the train. For some it will be too fast, and for others too slow.

The question of insurance claims also comes to mind. If a train, or part of it, were to be involved in an accident who would bear the blame, insurance-wise that is? Would the lead driver, who controls the train, be liable to pay for damage to all vehicles in ‘his’ train? Something the developers have not thought of yet.

Whatever happens, it is certain that a major shift in people’s thinking and driving habits will be necessary for such a system to work. It’s the old story of; “It sounds good on paper” but in practicality ………?

I’ll leave you to decide.
