What Will The New Year Bring

The New Year is just two days away and what will happen in 2018? Will the world improve or just carry on as it did in 2017. We have wars all across the globe as we try and eliminate the terrorists once and for all. They have been almost been beaten in Syria and Iraq but will they stop fighting? I don’t think so, for they will travel to other countries like Europe and begin attacks on cities all across the continent.

It is sad a world at the moment and we have to improve it somehow. Even in the Far East there are constant battles with terrorists and it is difficult to beat them. The same goes for The Middle East with the many terrorist organisations, and Boko Haram in Africa.

When you look to the future it is doubtful if the world will ever be at peace. It has taken over ten years to beat ISIS and the battle is not over yet. It will take a long time to eliminate these people once and for all, if that is possible.

In the meantime, we have had one of the most terrible winters in the world and it’s not over yet! Next year we could see seriously high temperatures during the summer and next winter could be worse. It is all due to us poisoning our atmosphere with so many cars and lorries on the road, and decimating the oceans with plastic. Already there are huge areas in the oceans that have gathered plastic and contaminated the seas and it doesn’t stop.

Walking along the seafront in Marbella my wife and I have seen plastic bottles floating in the sea among other things. All left by tourists who don’t care about the state of the sea. We have fish that have eaten plastic and been caught by fishermen, and when they are cut open we find plastic waste inside. We have to change our ways. In many cities you find waste on the streets thrown there by people who don’t care.

The atmosphere is getting more and more contaminated with diesel and petrol cars on the roads. Soon we will not be able to go out without wearing a mask of some sort for the contamination will get into our lungs and cause cancer among many.

There is plans to take all diesel cars off the roads by 2040 but that may be too late. Electric cars are the new norm to replace the current engines but that will take years to fulfil.  Who knows what effect the electric cars will have on the atmosphere? They will certainly get rid of the contamination of our atmosphere but it will take years. And who knows what effect this will have on the health of people? We really don’t know.

It is without doubt a sad world, and we are heading for destruction of the human race unless we can stop it now.

Brazil

Posted in America, Brazil, Britain, China, Conservation, Environment, European Union, Forests, News, Oceans with tags , , , , on 26/08/2017 by floroy1942

In all my life I have never heard of such a stupid government allowing mining in an area covering the size of Denmark (17,800 square miles) in the Amazon. Don’t the Brazil government realise that the Amazon is the largest forest in the world that provides us with oxygen. But it seems that profit is much more of a concern than the lives of people on the planet Earth, which in this day and age is not surprising.

c3676089cf664c9f929cd990a09ea3b2_18

A decree from President Michel Temer published in the official government gazette on Wednesday dissolved the protected area. Brazil is seeking to stimulate economic activity as Latin America’s top economy emerges from the worst economic crisis in more than a century. If the Brazil government keep this up the whole of the Amazon will disappear within a few decades and then what do we do?

The Amazon As It Used To Be

It is said that the government wants to mine gold, iron and manganese which this area is ‘presumed’ to have in abundance. What the President is doing is putting the lives of people on this planet in danger from lack of oxygen if he continues with the plan. Without doubt this activity will extend further if more riches are found under the soil in other areas.

Parts Of The Amazon Now!

We have already cut down huge swathes of forest to increase farming land across the world, but it does not seem to have any impression on the public. What most people do not realise is that the amount of oxygen in our atmosphere keeps us alive and if we continue to cut down trees across the world we will be left with very little.

The oceans also provide us with oxygen, but to a much lesser degree because it is so contaminated. Plastic is the number one contaminant of our oceans and all that is down to mankind. We pollute the oceans all across the world with plastic, oil and chemicals that come from our farmland and make their way into the oceans through our streams and rivers. Already we see plastic in the fish that are caught in the oceans.

plastic-ocean-polllution-seal-trapped-nets-fishing

I can see in 100 years time that this planet will not be able to support life as it used to because of all the contamination. But it is prophesied that by then we will have found other planets on which to live, but that will only be for the rich. The poor will die here on Earth due to the contamination.

It is without doubt a tragic tale of mankind on this planet, for we are killing ourselves through sheer stupidity and heartlessness. If mankind is to survive on this planet of ours than we need to make major changes to the way we live. Otherwise we will not be around in one or two hundred years time.

Car Pollution Poisoning Your Lungs

When I was young we took care of our planet and did not over-fish, contaminate the atmosphere as we do now, and used natural resources on farmland instead of chemicals.

The population of the world has exploded in the last forty years and it is impossible to feed everybody. Look at the starving populations in Africa and elsewhere where there is not enough food for everybody.

What with the increase in climate temperatures, caused solely by our pollution of the atmosphere with cars and factories, we cannot grow food in many places in the world, the biggest being Africa. If we continue like this it will be the end of us on this planet!

images

Many countries have said they will do something to limit the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere but to date I have not seen any progress. Have you? We still go on in the same old way with cars and factory pollution and nothing is done about it.

Diesel – The Killer

It is said that in Britain they wish to abandon diesel cars by 2040, but that is a long time from now and far too late. Unless we take strict measures to reduce the pollution in our skies things will get worse and worse. 2040 is far too late for by then the whole atmosphere will be so contaminated people will going around in gas masks. Already people in some country’s wear surgical masks when they go outside for fear of the pollution getting into their lungs. Soon this will spread across the whole globe.

Why can’t people see that they are ruining the planet we live on? I’m just glad I won’t have to live in the future.

How On Earth Could This Happen?

Nations search for 10 missing after US destroyer collision

                                                USS John S. McCain

How on earth could such a collision happen? It seems to me totally inconceivable that two ships could hit one another in this day and age. Twice now we have had American warships involved in a collision with other ships. First we had the USS Fitzgerald off Japan, and now another one, USS John S. McCain off Singapore.

The only thing I can think of is the crews must have been totally incompetent on both ships. They both have sophisticated radar and it should have been easy to avoid a collision. The captain’s of both ships have been held accountable, and so they should for it was sheer incompetence for them to have a collision.

Image: The Arleigh Burke-class Guided-Missile Destroyer USS Fitzgerald, Damaged by Colliding with a Philippine-flagged Merchant Vessel, is seen at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka

                                                      USS Fitzgerald

They must have seen on radar that the tankers were heading on a collision course and the officer on the bridge should have taken avoiding action. It is inconceivable that in this day and age, with all the technology that the Navy has that they could have been involved in a collision at sea.

The collision cost the lives of sailors who were doing their job and this is a scandal. In my view, the captains of both ships should serve jail time, plus the people on the bridge at the time. To needlessly throw away the lives of sailors through sheer stupidity must be a criminal offence.

Atmospheric Pollution In Cities

I wonder why today’s generation think that our weather patterns are normal? We have areas of the world today where temperatures are rising so fast that it is becoming unbearable. We have floods that have never been so destructive in the past, and droughts are common across many countries of the world.

In Africa for example, people are dying in their thousands because it is so hot and they have no food anymore. We have tremendous floods across the world where people see their houses washed away and many people die. In places like the United States and Portugal the air is so dry that forest fires spring up and reduce them to ashes. The one thing to remember is that we rely on trees among other things, like the sea,  to provide us with oxygen. Even the oceans are contaminated.

Whatever you might say, this is not normal, for fifty/sixty years ago these things never happened on such a huge scale. The world is destroying itself and there is no-one to blame but us humans.

Most of the weather changes have been caused by atmospheric contamination and we have our cars and factories to blame. If we continue like this I can see the end of mankind on this planet, for it will get so bad that the planet will be unlivable.

The sad thing is no-one is doing much to combat this threat to humanity. We have had climate conference after climate conference but nothing is changing, even though governments promise to do something about it.

2017131-115019110-6943-6-atmospheric-pollution

To begin with, measures must be taken to get rid of diesel engines for they are the worst polluters. Second, we need to reduce the number of vehicles on our roads drastically. It is unbelievable that many families have three or even four cars per household. This has to be reduced.

All factories must be made to curb contamination by making sure that they do not pump dangerous chemicals into the air. This will take many years to accomplish but it must be done if mankind is to survive on the Earth.

At the climate conferences all countries say they will abide by the rules that are drawn up, but they seldom do. Life goes on as it always has and the pollution is getting steadily worse. Day by day we see cities covered in smog, and in China for example, people go around wearing masks so the pollution does not get into their lungs. As time goes on this will spread to many other cities across the world.

It is time for governments across the world to make some hard decisions about climate change, for it will steadily get worse as time goes by. It is easy to say “it will be alright in the end”, but it will not. As the pollution of our atmosphere gets worse and worse people will have a very short lifespan, and that is inevitable.

Do You Believe In Climate Change

Posted in America, Australia, Britain, Conservation, Environment, Europe, Health, News, Oceans, Toxic Waste with tags , , , , on 06/04/2017 by floroy1942

Right Or Wrong?

Climate change is a touchy subject these days and many people do not believe in it. But the facts speak for themselves when you consider the massive flooding of countries like Peru, Australia and New Zealand, India and Bangladesh among others. Also we have drastic droughts and storms over different parts of the world. These things were unheard of in the past.

The weather patterns of the world have changed drastically over the past thirty years with drought, floods, massive hurricanes and typhoons, and a rising sea level. Some deny that these problems are manmade and are just a natural cycle in our world. The truth is that it is all manmade, caused by the heavy pollution we are sending into the atmosphere.

It would be difficult to ignore the facts when you consider such disasters with so many people killed and the loss of their homes. To me the facts cannot be denied for we are heading into the worst disasters of our world.

The big question is why? Is it a natural cycle or due to mankind’s ignorance to the state of our world. The toxic levels of our atmosphere are steadily rising due to our careless attitude to the climate, and as we go on the situation will only get worse.

Since the turn of the twentieth century we have been steadily increasing the contamination of the world’s atmosphere. It is said that last year we exceeded the possibility of the Earth to regenerate the atmosphere by August, and for the rest of the year  we added more and more contamination with the Earth unable to handle it. Even our oceans are being contaminated at an alarming rate through various means. So from this you can conclude that the planet and the atmosphere is getting worse year on year. When is it likely to stop?

Mankind is heading for extinction if we keep this up and in perhaps a hundred years we will cease to exist, because we have poisoned our atmosphere to the extent where all life on the planet will cease to exist.

I know that many people will consider this to be a load of rubbish, but you have to consider the condition of our world today, and imagine what it will be like in a tens of  years time if we continue living as we do.

The biggest contaminators of our atmosphere are vehicles and factories that push out toxic fumes daily. With over a billion vehicles on the planet and an untold number of factories the situation will get worse year on year. Some countries may see in twenty of thirty years time people walking around with gas masks, for already in China people wear face masks to stop the pollution from entering their lungs. This will soon spread to the west in some cities if we do nothing.

Already places like London, Paris, and in particular cities in the Middle East are suffering from heavy pollution and you can bet your life it will spread. The sad thing is, mankind seems oblivious to the spread of air contamination, and you can bet your life it will come and bite us in the backside.

At the moment people are living up to their eighties, nineties and beyond but that will soon change as the pollution of our atmosphere extends. You can make all the excuses you like but it will not change things unless we do something about it. There are so many people who believe that climate change is a myth, but in time they will see the truth as we are forced into taking measures to protect our health. It is not too late to do something about it but in ten or twenty years time it will be.

Governments have to start drastically reducing the number of cars in the world, and ban diesel which is the worst polluter. Factories must start using fuel that does not contaminate the atmosphere so much, but first people must be aware of the danger they are in for this to work. We all rely on governments to do the right thing, but sadly this is not the case for corrupt politicians are everywhere and their one aim in life is to be as rich as possible.

It is time for the world to made aware of the danger we are in and for the people to do something about it.

A Changing World

Posted in America, Britain, Conservation, England, Environment, European Union, Immigrants, Islamic State, News, Nuclear Weapons with tags , , , , on 22/03/2017 by floroy1942

I cannot believe how much the world has changed since I was a boy. I sometimes get the impression that the human race is going stark raving mad, what with all the changes that have happened over the last seventy years.

Beautiful England

When I was a young boy the world was at peace, except for the continuous verbal altercations between communist Russia and America. The only war that took place in those times was the Korean War against the communist north which was short because the United Nations got together a multi-national force to stop them. Despite that the world was for the most part at peace, and countries did not antagonize each other. On top of this we never had violent demonstrations with teenagers setting fire to shops and cars. There were of course demonstrations by the miners in Britain, but for the most part they were more or less peaceful. People went about their daily lives without demonstrations and complaining about what their governments did or did not do.

Summer In The UK

The weather was for the most part calm and we didn’t get hurricanes, flooding and drought across the whole world. In Britain winter was cold and we got our fair share of snow, but when spring came it was calm and the trees and plants blossomed and the countryside looked beautiful. In England we had many woods full of bluebells and daffodils as winter past. They have now for the most part disappeared because the farmers wanted to make more money and had them cleared. When summer came we had temperatures in the mid-twenties which was a pleasure for the people. Holiday makers went to English seaside towns and spent their time on the beach basking in the sun. There were no drunks causing mayhem on the streets and drugs were never seen.

The Raging Sea

What a huge change has come over the world today. Now we see all the things that were never heard of in those days. Wars, hurricanes, drought and flooding all across the world, and not to forget the violent demonstrations by the people against something or other. Governments having slanging matches against each other, and tensions have mounted in this modern era, and for what?

ISIS Execution

Currently Europe is battling against the influx of migrants caused by the ISIS war in the Middle East, and the continent is being flooded with these people because few countries have taken the time or effort to put ISIS out of business. I have often said that the United Nations should have stepped in long ago and wiped these people out so that the world can return to peace and all the migrants can go home. As you know, this has never happened because they stay silent.

At the moment Russia, Syria, and the United States are doing all they can to stop these people but arguments about how they should go about it are commonplace. The sad thing is, many ISIS fighters have come to Europe as refugees and have carried out attacks on various nations.

ISIS ‘Refugee’ Arrested At The Border

It was said in a report a few days ago that the whole world will be Muslim by 2050. That I cannot believe but this is what ISIS is trying to achieve. In our prisons Muslim prisoners are trying to convince other prisoners to become Muslim, and the number of people in the U.K. who have converted to Allah is growing. Why?

People in the Middle East have suffered greatly under ISIS but the other Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai and the UAE have done nothing to help these people so they have all fled to Europe. The only Middle East nation to help has been Jordan, and they are stretched to the limit.

As It Used To Be

We have seen huge changes in the weather due to global warming. Even England has had its share of hurricanes, flooding and drought. But it is far worse in other countries across the globe. Recently dozens of people have lost their lives in the flooding in Peru, and we have seen major droughts across many nations, so for example, it is impossible to grow crops to feed the people, especially in Africa. In the middle of Africa at the moment there are 20 million people who do not have enough food to keep them alive. What are the rich nations doing about this?

Murder On The Streets

Constantly we hear of vicious attacks and murder by young people these days. This was very rare when I was young because we were brought up properly by our parents, and discipline was strict during our formative years. Now all that has gone and the young people do as they please without a thought for others. Almost every day we hear of murder and violence in Britain, sometimes for the most stupid of reasons. Young people go out on a Saturday night and use drugs to get high and consume a lot of alcohol just to have a good time, and then the violence begins. Street fights, and sometimes murder.

The World Of Anarchy

The world has become a sad place and it makes me wonder how long mankind will last. In general we have become so violent against each other that the future of mankind is in doubt. Within a few years complete anarchy will reign in many countries and that will signal the beginning of the end of the human race.

Bribes

We have to get back to law and order on this planet and governments must govern properly for the sake of the people. The main trouble with politicians is the lust for money. Most of them will take bribes for agreeing to dubious suggestions put forward by companies and fellow politicians just to make themselves rich.

Gates And Buffet – Two Who Help Others

We have many rich businessmen who are worth billions, but what do they do with the money – hide it in offshore bank accounts instead of using it to help others. Two of the people who do not conform with this are Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Most others do not care to help those who are in dire straits.

The Poor And The Rich

Rich countries are doing little to help the starving millions in Africa, and if they do there is always someone who will help themselves to the aid money given by many countries. Look at Haiti for example. There were billions pledged to help the country after their tragic earthquakes that destroyed the capital Port-au-Prince, but very little of it actually arrived to help the people rebuild their capital. Its the same the world over. Money has become a ‘God’ to the current generation, and people will do whatever they can to get as much as possible. It is my belief that all this will end in tragedy for the human race.

Clean Air – A Necessity

One thing we should not forget is the increasing contamination of our atmosphere. In many cities across the world the smog is so thick that people wear masks to stop it getting into their lungs. If this continues, then the life expectancy of the people will be very low. We will no longer see people living to 80 or 100 years as the pollution destroys their lungs.

Poisoning The Atmosphere

Proposals have been put forward to ban all diesel cars on the roads because this is the number one polluter, but this will never happen. We also have to clean up our factories that push out huge volumes of smoke to  get the atmosphere back to normal, but again this will never happen because of the cost.

Get Ready To Lose Parts Of California and Miami

This atmospheric contamination is causing the sea temperatures and level to rise. It is said in America for example, that in thirty or forty years much of the coastal towns in California and Florida will be taken over by the sea which will cause havoc among those living there. These are not the only cities to be affected as there are many more across the world as sea levels rise. The only thing mankind can do is to stop the atmospheric contamination so things can return to normal. This will take years to accomplish, but governments worldwide have to be strong.

The Aftermath

Perhaps the only answer is for the population of this planet to diminish to perhaps a few million and then mankind will be able to continue its existence. This may happen, what with the current tensions between the USA and Russia. If it escalates then someone may be dumb enough to ‘press the button’ and nuclear war will follow. Mind you, the radiation will spread around the globe and most likely few people will survive. I hope this never happens, but you never know.

The Big Problem

Taking everything into account this world has become a tragedy compared to what it was. Very few countries know the meaning of true peace and just government, and to me its only going to get worse. As it gets worse more people will die, especially the starving in Africa.

Yesteryear The Murderers Paid the Ultimate penalty

Currently the law is useless against criminals and murderers these days in Britain. It is a farce that you can kill someone in England and get a ten year sentence, but are out of prison in three or four years. In my time if you kill someone you would go to the gallows and be done with it. But the ‘Goody Goodies’ have ensured that this is no longer the case, and they keep trying for more lenient prison terms because they think that to go to prison will change the minds of these killers. This is a load of bull (and I put that nicely).

Taking everything into consideration I am glad that I am 74 and not 21. For the world is headed for some major upsets in the years to come.

Science Is Getting More Laughable!

Posted in America, Atlantic, Britain, Canada, Conservation, Environment, Nature, News, Pacific with tags , , , , on 01/01/2015 by floroy1942

I sometimes get the impression these days that science has lost its way! Some of the experiments, and the results that come from them, seem to bear no relationship to intelligent and rational thinking whatsoever. This week I came across some ‘scientific results’ that seem to test the limits of basic intelligence.

The first one concerns shipping, and a bunch of scientists from Leeds University have come up with the idea that we should have all ships ‘generate smaller bubbles in their wake to reflect more of the sunlight back into space’.

Make The Bubbles Smaller?

Make The Bubbles Smaller?

Their hypothesis is that the bubbles created by the turning propellers of a ship as it passes through the water should be made smaller. By doing this, the white froth left behind by all moving ships could last up to 24 hours instead of the normal few minutes, and thereby reflect more sunlight. It would seem to me that we need to increase the number of ships on the world’s oceans by a few million for this idea to work.

Naturally, this is part of the Global Warming Project and is part of an effort to reduce the rising temperature of the planet. Leeds’ Prof Piers Forster said the bubbles idea was a plausible scheme. “A lot of these technologies are completely hypothetical, but “The one advantage about this technology – of trying to generate these tiny ‘micro-bubbles’ – is that the technology does already exist.”

Part of Leeds University UK

Part of Leeds University UK

Julia Crook, also from Leeds, explained: “The technology required for other forms of solar radiation management is a long way off being ready, whereas micro-bubble generators already exist. The Japanese are already experimenting with micro-bubbles under ships’ hulls to make them more streamlined and more fuel-efficient. This could have a double benefit.”

She added: “This form of solar radiation management has the advantage over stratospheric aerosol injection, in that one could move ships with bubble generators to different parts of the ocean, providing more control on the regional temperature and precipitation changes induced.”

The Last Time Many Ships Sailed Together Was In WW2 Convoys

The Last Time Many Ships Sailed Together Was In WW2 Convoys

A quick search showed me that there are roughly 104,304 ships in the world including fishing boats and pleasure craft. This number, if all sailing the sea together would not even cover the area of the Black Sea. When you consider they are spread all across the globe their impact would be negligible, and the amount of reflected sunlight would be so small as to be unmeasurable. Not even worth the effort of converting a single ship never mind over 100,000, although the scientists consider such technology has ‘the potential’ to reduce temperatures by 0.5C. The one thing they did say was that there is a distinct possibility this measure could increase rainfall in some areas, as if we don’t get enough in many parts with massive flooding!

The second scientific report concerns of all things, Arctic Ground Squirrels! According to the Woods Hole Research Centre in Massachusetts, US, we can blame the the humble Arctic ground squirrel for increasing world temperatures too. For it seems their burrowing into the permafrost at these northern latitudes is releasing large amounts of CO2 that is normally trapped in the frozen ground. These findings were presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco.

Killing Our Planet?

Killing Our Planet?

Dr Sue Natali, from Woods Hole Research Centre in Massachusetts, US, said, “Carbon has been accumulating in permafrost for tens of thousands of years. The temperature is very cold, the soils are saturated, so that when plants and animals die, rather than decompose, the carbon has been slowly, slowly building up. Right now the carbon storage is about 1,500 pentagrams (1,500 billion tonnes). To put that in perspective, that’s about twice as much as is contained in the atmosphere.”

Nigel Golden, from the University of Wisconsin, looked at ground squirrels: small, fluffy rodents that are found across the Arctic. He said:, “They are soil engineers. They break down the soil when they are digging their burrows, they mix the top layer with the bottom layer, they are bringing oxygen to the soil and they are fertilizing the soil with their urine and their faeces. We saw an increase in soil temperature in the soils the Arctic ground squirrels were occupying.”

To me these ideas are about as crazy as sowing the clouds with salt so as to reflect more sunlight. I am no scientist, but it seems to me that if we do that we end up with salt water rain and a fat lot of good that will do anyone.

But at least we can, in part, blame the Arctic ground squirrels for our current climate problems. Ah Well! At least its not all our fault (sigh of relief)!

The Plastic Island Part 2

Posted in Environment, Illegal Dumping, Oceans, Toxic Waste with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 07/03/2010 by floroy1942

Ocean Plastic

On the 22 February (Welcome to Plastic Island) I reported on the huge islands of floating plastic rubbish that pollute our world seas, and today more information has come to light. It would seem the problem is far bigger than first thought, as it has now been determined the patch of floating plastic in the Pacific is now twice the size of the US State of Texas, and increasing rapidly. This means the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ as it is now called, extends now for 1,392,400 sq/km and that is about six-and-a-half times the size of Great Britain and almost 1% of the entire ocean.

Your Beach?

But I hear you say, 1% of the largest ocean on the planet is not much, but the size is increasing rapidly with every passing year. Should it continue to increase at its present rate, by the year 2050 you may well be able to walk from Hawaii to the American mainland. Walk along any beach after the winter storms and you will find it littered with plastic rubbish, and then imagine this is but an infinitesimal fraction of the rubbish littering our oceans.

Imagine the Ocean Like This

Beginning just 500 miles off the Californian coast, this area is now the largest conglomeration of rubbish on the planet, with an estimated 100,000,000 tons of bottles, plastic bags, flip flops, shampoo bottles, plastic swimming pools, children’s toys, plastic cups and tyres among other things. If its made of plastic you will find it there. Among the debris can be found items with Chinese and Japanese markings, which show some of it has travelled the entire width of the Pacific before being caught up in the vortex, or gyre.

The area is so clogged with plastic that it resembles more a thick soup than water, and much of the older rubbish floats just below the surface because it has been broken down by the sun. Most worrying to scientists, is plastic very often contains toxic chemicals that can have a devastating effect on fish stocks.

Death by Plastic

Considering that 60% of all fish caught in all the oceans comes from the Pacific, this could have an alarming effect on the economies of many countries in the future. Fish and seabirds exists on the tiny plankton that abound in the world’s oceans, but the catastrophic fact about these ocean garbage patches is, that once the plastic is broken down and reduced in size by the sun, it often resembles food to the fish and birds. In the contaminated areas and their surroundings, the level of plastic pellets is six times higher than the plankton. Sampling recently revealed a single fish had ingested 26 pieces of plastic and there is little doubt this debris will eventually work its way into the food chain, if it hasn’t already.

Ocean Rubbish Gyres

Also disturbing, is a similar plastic vortex which has been found in the Central Atlantic Ocean with the high probability of another being in the southern part, plus one in the Indian Ocean. Oceanographers are convinced more will be discovered in time. It does not matter from which point you throw a plastic bottle into the sea, at some point in the future it will end up in one of these plastic dumps in mid ocean. Plastic does not degrade like most other materials, once its made its here forever, with the only successful means of getting rid of it being burning. The trouble there is we are then contaminating the air with the toxic content.

A team of volunteers from the Kaisai Conservation Project intend to send two ships to the area in an attempt to find out if this plastic waste can be turned into fuel. I for one hope this project turns out to be successful, and that soon we see ships trawling the seas collecting this rubbish and cleaning up our most precious asset from whence all life came.

Until the next time – and remember, we only have one world!!!
