Absurdity Of The Highest Degree

I cannot believe that a so-called ‘educated’ man can tell the government that we should not send thieves and fraudsters to jail!  Prof Andrew Ashworth, a ‘legal expert’, and Vinerian Professor of English Law at Oxford University, has produced a pamphlet  to be distributed in which he says that jail time should be reserved for those “who commit crimes of a violent, sexual or threatening nature”.

Prof Andrew Ashworth

Prof Andrew Ashworth

He also argued against imprisoning repeat, non-violent offenders. He said, “for ‘pure property offences’, including theft, handling of stolen goods, criminal damage and fraud, imprisonment was disproportionate”. In his words, “Instead, the priority should be to deal with such offences in the community, giving precedence to compensation or reparation for the victim and, where the offence is sufficiently serious, imposing a community sentence.”

He claims that some 20,000 people go to prison each year for theft or handling stolen goods, 5,000 for fraud and 1,000 for criminal damage. The effect of his policy would reduce the number of men serving prison sentences by 8% (5,000 men) and women by 21% (700 women), saving around £230m each year.

Mugger In Action

Mugger In Action

O.K. clever dick, how you ‘compensate’ a couple who have been robbed of everything of value in their house? Pass the buck onto the insurance company who will pay a fraction of the value of the stolen articles, if they pay at all?  How do you ‘compensate’ old age pensioners who have been robbed of their most cherished possessions gathered over many years, and who may suffer serious illness as a result of the loss? What planet does this idiot live on, certainly not ours! It seems fairly certain that this pontificating fool has never been robbed or assaulted by a criminal. Perhaps he should go and talk to the many victims of crime before mouthing off!

This has raised a huge response from the public and many are saying that prison time does not stop re-offending, which is often true. So let us look at this argument and bisect the problems involved with keeping crime off our streets.

All The Comforts Of Home

All The Comforts Of Home

I agree with most of the comments that currently, prison does not stop the majority of criminals from re-offending, but that is for one simple reason, ever since the introduction of the Human Rights Laws we have been forced to turn our prisons into something resembling a holiday camp compared to the past.  We see often enough pictures of prisoners playing pool, lounging around, and of course every one has a TV, music and /or games centre in their cell. They have curtains on the windows so the sight of the bars will not traumatized them (oh my goodness, heaven forbid that they should be traumatized!), and the days of them doing hard labour are long behind us. Many of the custodial sentences handed out by the court, IF they get one, are so lenient as to mean nothing for the average criminal. For all the good prison does these days in getting criminals back ‘on the right path’ we might as well sentence them to a year in Butlin’s. Statistics have consistently shown that most of those sentenced to less than eighteen months automatically return to crime, sometimes within days of release.

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

On the other hand, those who get Community Service have no incentive to ‘go straight’. It is a fact that most times they do not turn up for work, and when they do they skive off somewhere. There is almost no supervision, and those sentenced to it find it a joke. There is absolutely no incentive whatsoever for an habitual thief or thug to turn away from crime, mainly because it pays well, and even if caught there is practically no comeback. Judges are consistently giving lighter and lighter sentences to hardened criminals to relieve the ‘over-crowding’ in our prisons and keep the Human Right’s Nutters happy.  Their argument is that even a serial child molester/rapist or serial killer has the right to his own cell  along with all the comforts of home.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with there being two, three, or even four prisoners to a cell and if they don’t like it, don’t do the crime! All the comforts currently enjoyed by serious criminals should be removed until they are left with a bed, a wash basin, and a toilet. For most less serious crimes, even six months of living in those conditions would be enough to deter all but the hardened criminal away from crime. The sentence received would be dependent on the criminal record and the crime. Serious offenders would live in the same conditions, but for a much longer period. Another factor is that criminals should be made to do hard labour 12 hours a day. All this pussyfooting around with pool tables, TV’s etc should be banned.

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

As for the joke known as Community Service, that should be banned entirely and replaced with prison time, for even three months in a prison with a harsh regime will be enough to persuade most, if not all petty criminals that crime does not pay. At the moment it does, and criminals are making large amounts of money at the expanse of the pain and misery of their victims. It has to stop, and to hell with their human rights until such time as they can prove themselves to be fit to re-join society. We can at least be happy that the Justice Minister Damian Green has rejected the proposals outright as he should.

In a speech to Magistrates in Canary Wharf London Mr. Green said “I think that would not just send the wrong signal to criminals and the public, it would send the wrong signal to victims. Repeat offending, even non-violent theft, can be a huge problem for an individual family, for an individual victim and can often blight a whole community. Habitual, prolific offenders should have the fear of prison hanging over them.” I agree with that except for one point, what is there to fear from a prison sentence these days except the loss of freedom of movement?

The Victim Support Group had this to say:  “Victims tell us they want more than anything else the punishment to fit the crime and for the criminal not to re-offend”.

Quite right I say, make criminals wish they had never crossed the line! There is too much emphasis on the criminals Human Rights and not enough on the victim! That has to change.

Life Should Mean Life – Another CHR Cockup!

Posted in Britain, Conservative Party, David Cameron, England, Europe, Human Rights, Insanity, Justice, Prison, UK with tags , , , , on 09/07/2013 by floroy1942

I was astounded to read reports today that the European Convention on Human Rights has once again interfered in British Law on the side of criminals. This time they are saying that to send a convicted killer to prison ‘for life’ was “inhuman and degrading”. They are talking about some of the most vicious and callous killers in our prisons, and say they have the right to a review of their prison sentence, with the possibility of release. Their report is in reaction to an appeal brought by three of Britain’s most brutal killers, namely, Jeremy Bamber, Douglas Vinter and Peter Moore.

Meddling European Judges.

Meddling European Judges.

In the opinion of the judges, for a life prison sentence to “remain compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights there has to be both a possibility of review and a possibility of release”. In effect, this means that the British Government must amend the law to ensure it complies with the CHR dictates, which would give life term prisoners the right to demand release. The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights which consisted of 17 judges, did say that their decision did not mean that killers like Bamber,  Vinter and Moore could look forward to being freed in the near future.

Many UK politicians, including the Prime Minister David Cameron have openly disagreed with the verdict, in  fact the Prime Minister even went so far as to say in true politician fashion, that he was “very, very disappointed”. Ooooh David! Why don’t you just come out and say it David – “Shove your decision where the sun don’t shine”. That would really be telling the interfering busybodies!

Lets have a quick look at the killers in the spotlight in this case.

Jeremy Bamber Murdered His Entire Family For Profit

Jeremy Bamber Murdered His Entire Family For Profit

Jeremy Bamber, who was born in 1961, murdered his step-father, mother, sister, and her six-year-old twin sons in his parents’ home at White House Farm. He then placed the weapon, a shotgun, in the hands of his sister who suffered from schizophrenia, and shot her too to give the impression of a murder suicide by his sick sister. According to the prosecution in the case, he did this to secure a large inheritance. He received five life sentences in 1994.

Douglas Vinter - Double Killer

Douglas Vinter – Double Killer

Douglas Vinter, born 1970 in London, England, was first convicted of murder in 1996, having stabbed to death train worker Robert Eden (24) in a Middlesbrough railway cabin. At the time, Vinter had been working as a railway signalman. He served a mere nine years in prison for Mr Eden’s murder before being released and moving to Tees-side. A year after being released from prison, Vinter married Anne White, but they separated after seven months because during their stormy marriage, Vinter had attacked his wife twice. On 11 February 2008, he strangled and stabbed her to death at his mother’s home in Normanby, Teesside while high on drugs and alcohol.

Peter Moore Killed Four People

Peter Moore Killed Four People

Peter Moore who was born 1940, is a serial killer who in 1995 murdered four men, Henry Roberts, a 56-year-old gay man, Edward Carthy, a 28-year-old man whom Moore met in a gay bar, Keith Randles, a 49-year-old traffic manager, and Anthony Davies, 40. All were stabbed to death and mutilated  “for fun”.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said in an interview: “People will find the ruling intensely frustrating. I think this will simply reinforce the desire in this country for wholesale reform of our human rights laws. I suspect that the vast majority of the public think the court is just getting this wrong – at the very least it should be a matter for the British Parliament.” Well, you got that right Mr, Grayling!

There are of course many more killers of the same ilk serving life sentences in our prisons, in total 54, but some have had there sentences reduced even though they will still be old men when they are released.

Well, Mr. Grayling - 'Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!'

Well, Mr. Grayling – ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!’

This whole saga brings to light once again how the EU Court of Human Rights is interfering in British Justice because it is being manipulated by criminals who more often than not get what they wish. It is a further stab in the back for the relatives of victims who must already face the prospect of their loved one’s killers often not getting a justifiable sentence. Many of these men, like Douglas Vinter, are repeat killers who have murdered someone else after being released from prison for their first murder. Others have killed multiple times, but still Strasbourg thinks we must respect their ‘Human Rights’. Well I say, to hell with their human rights and lets see the law on the side of the victims  for a change. It took ten years to deport the terrorist preachers Qatada and Hamsa because of their interference in British Justice, and I for one say NO MORE!

For me, the only course open to the government is to tell Strasbourg to get the hell out of the British Justice System and let us deal with these people under British Law!

More Evidence Of Failing British Justice!

Posted in Britain, Budget Cuts, England, Government, Government Spending, Justice, Prison, Teen Violence, Teens, Theft with tags , , , , on 31/05/2011 by floroy1942

If anyone has doubts that the justice system in Britain is in total meltdown, figures released today should dispel them completely.

Petty Crime? It Isn’t If It’s Your Car!

It doesn’t happen in Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, or any other country you care to mention, so why do we the British, let habitual criminals off with a ‘slap on the wrist’ when in any other country they would be ‘banged up’ for a very long time.

This government, just like all the others that would be ‘tough on crime’ have turned our justice system into an international joke. All we hear from idiots like Ken Clark is; “It costs too much to put towrags in prison”. Well! Tough Ken!

Living On A Different Planet To The Rest Of Us

He and his cronies are always blubbering on about ‘reducing the re-offending rate’, but I have news for you Ken; IT AIN’T WORKING! A report out today lays it all on the line so that even a dimwit politician can understand.

Give Him A Slap On The Wrist?

Nearly two thirds of habitual criminals are avoiding a jail sentence despite having more than 15 previous convictions. Instead they are let off with a warning, given community service or a fine! These are all hardened thieves, violent muggers and drug dealers, and after a quick court appearance its business as usual.

The report cites a total of 96,710 criminals sentenced last year of which 8,200 were given a suspended sentence and were immediately back on the street, approximately 15,000 were fined, and 20,000 were handed community service orders. Just 34,600 were given time behind bars for their crimes while the rest were given a caution.

See You Again Next Week?

Our illustrious Justice Minister, Ken Clark, has already stated that he plans to release some 3,000 prisoners early to reduce overcrowding and save money, plus, according to news reports, he has told senior judges to reduce the numbers given custodial sentences, preferring community service orders to reduce re-offending.

Teens View Of Prison:

How can a qualified lawyer and Justice Minister be so out of touch with the real world! It beggars belief!

Currently, three quarters of all criminals caught return to crime in less than nine years, and very many after a few short weeks. And why not? They get all the benefits of a life of crime and if caught get a slap on the wrist or a laughable community service order, so where is the incentive to ‘go straight’!

Time In A Real Prison Would Set Them Straight

Time and again I have said the only thing young thugs and criminals understand these days is a prison system that puts the fear of God into them. Unfortunately Ken doesn’t read my blog! (sigh!)

Just when you think maybe, we have a government that will actually tackle head-on the ever growing crime on our streets and finally sort out these towrags once and for all, they turn out to be just as bad as the previous lot.

Starting Young!

When will we have a politician with balls enough to take away all the luxuries that prisoners enjoy at tax payers expense, and turn our prison system into what it should be, a deterrent. To be honest, I don’t think I will see it in my lifetime.

You’ve Got It Wrong Ken – Clark on Prison Reform

Posted in Britain, England, Government, Government Spending, Immigrants, Insanity, Justice, Modern World, MP's, Old Age Pensioner, Parliament, Police, Prison, UK with tags , , , , , , , , , on 05/03/2011 by floroy1942

Ken Clark, the British Justice Secretary, has come under fire from Magistrates for his prison reform agenda. He has stated he wants prisoners who are “unlikely to get a prison sentence” to be given automatic bail. It’s all part of his plan to reduce costs and solve the overcrowding in british prisons.

Where It All Begins

Thankfully, those with more brains, i.e. the Magistrates, are coming out in opposition. Due to the overcrowding, most felons get off with community service or ‘slap on the wrist’ anyway these days, so that means the greater majority of criminals, around 35,000, will be back on the streets straight away if Ken has his way.

The magistrates are, quite rightly in my opinion, afraid offenders will have all the time they need to intimidate witnesses, commit further crimes, and fail to turn up for their hearings. All fairly logical and pretty obvious to anyone but a dimwit.

Another Misguided Politician

Ken Clark has put forward many proposals to ease the prison population, among them halving the sentences of criminals who confess to their crimes, and releasing 3,000 of the current 80,000 inmate population early. He claims he wants to “break the cycle” of reoffending by tackling the causes of crime. Bullshit Ken!

The only thing a hardened criminal respects is a long hard prison term and nothing less will do the job. It is long past time when authorities recognize that criminals are a danger to society and no amount of hand-wringing and psychological babble is going to make them mend their ways. Certainly not reducing sentences, for all that will do is make the situation worse. If a felon knows he can commit crimes and get away with it almost scot-free he will laugh at the justice system all the way to his short-stay cell.

To give the man credit, he has stated that inmates of HM Prisons should be made to work a full working week just like the rest of us, and more demanding community sentencing is required, which is fine so long as the correct controls are in place. He also advocates deporting immigrant criminals instead of giving them a custodial sentence in Britain. Now that I do agree with!

All the Comforts of Home

I have made my feelings on this general subject amply in the past in previous posts and still believe heavier sentencing and removing the ‘5 star hotel’ atmosphere in prisons is the best answer. Make prisons something to be feared by all criminals as it was in the past. That will sure as hell break the cycle of reoffending and no doubt about it.

It seems all the measures being taken by Ken Clark are aimed at reducing the prison population and more importantly, reducing costs. His stated aim is to reduce the £4Bn per year prison and probation costs by 20% in the next 4 years. Good Luck Ken – You’ll need it! The general public will as usual be the losers!

One of the main problems today is overcrowding, but to me that means we should build more prisons not release prisoners early to reduce it. Although some attempts have been made to increase the prison capacity over the last three decades, it has proven to be insufficient. The main reason for this is the inability of the authorities to prevent villains from reoffending, and jail sentencing has become so much of a joke its no longer a deterrent.

That's Funny - I Don't Have One. You?

Today’s jailbirds live in far better conditions than the majority of our old age pensioners, which in itself is a scandal. There is nothing hard or harsh about prison life these days, its more akin to a holiday camp with all the comforts of home. TV, gym equipment, snooker tables, cinema, games and library, in fact everything we ordinary law-abiding mortals do not have. And on top of that, they get to sit around on their fat duffs for most of the time. Where in the name of all thats holy is the incentive to ‘go straight’ after a prison sentence?

I am not going to go into what I think prisons should be like again, I have done it so often, suffice it to say, if you are interested, I refer you to my earlier posts as follows:

Six Months In Here and You Won't Re-Offend!

There can be little doubt that our justice system is in urgent need of a major overhaul, for the prime facet of law enforcement, i.e. taking criminals out of circulation and thereby protecting the public, no longer seems to be a prime motivator.

From what I have read in recent news bulletins I am convinced that Ken Clark is totally on the wrong track. His reforms will do nothing to bolster public faith in the justice system of our country, and as the magistrates have already said, they are more likely to undermine that confidence. Ah Well! Roll on the next politician who promises to be ‘tough on crime’!

Death Penalty Outlawed – and Now Look At the Mess!

Killers Nightmare

As I read the comments of people writing about newspapers articles involving crime recently, it would seem there is an overwhelming desire among the general public to see hanging back in Britain. High profile crimes over the past decade or more, linked with the ever decreasing sentences, appear to have sparked the idea in people’s minds that the death sentence may be the only way to stop the spiralling serious crime rate.

Violent Crime

While 58 nations world-wide still have the death penalty, Britain abolished it in 1969, the last execution taking place in 1964. Human Rights activists labelled the death penalty as “cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment” while Amnesty International considers it to be “the ultimate denial of human rights”. To me, it seems these people do not have a thought in their collective heads for the victims of violent crime, and the savagery meted out by today’s young criminals. Maybe they consider the lives snuffed out by murder and torture to be insignificant. I doubt the relatives of the victims would agree.

There is little doubt in the opinion of many that although Labour has repeatedly promised to be “Tough on Crime” before every election, there has been nothing to show for these empty promises. The rate of serious crime has risen sharply year on year, despite what the official ‘massaged’ figures from government show.

Just Two Years Old

Every day sees a new horror story in the Press of someone who has been brutally murdered, more often than not by children as young as nine. We have only to remember John Venebles and Robert Thompson who led away, tortured, and then savagely murdered little 2 year-old James Bulger. Another case in point is the terrifying ordeal of two youngsters in Edlington who were sadistically tortured and left for dead by two brothers aged ten and eleven.

But it is not only children that form a major threat to law-abiding citizens, there are also career criminals like Waleed Salem who got off scot-free from a charge of aggravated burglary on the home of Munir Hussain. He had 50 previous convictions but had only ever spent a total of 42 days in jail for all of them. In most cases all he got was a community service sentence. After his run in with Munier Hussain he openly boasted outside the court that the law couldn’t touch him, and the sad thing is, he turned out to be right.

Overcrowding?

Because of the overcrowding in prisons, many often violent criminals are released early after serving only a small fraction of their sentence. In a large number of cases, these people go on to re-offend within weeks of release, and sometimes it involves murder. Once again the case of Venebles and Thompson comes to mind with them being released and given new identities after serving only five years for their horrendous crime. As we all now know, Venebles is back ‘inside’.

The ‘Barmy Brigade’ felt they should be released early “because they were only children” and “came from dysfunctional homes”, as if that excused their vicious crime! It is an inexcusable fact that in lower class homes in particular, although not exclusively, parents today have little or no control over their offspring. In fact, I would dare say there is little interest in bringing up children correctly. Judicial punishment for dysfunctional parents is long overdue in my opinion.

Many parents today seem to think it is the schools responsibility to give their children the necessary lessons in good behaviour, so without the required guidance, is it any wonder we have a generation of tearaways and thugs!

Home From Home

With ever shorter sentences and prisons like 5 star hotels, we are in a period where the average criminal has absolutely no fear of Justice? More often than not, even vicious felons get Community Service for a few weeks and are left in the public domain to continue their nefarious trade. It has been proven time and again that this system does not work because the criminal just ignores the whole thing, and usually no-one can be bothered to check up on them, and they know it. So really it is nothing but a gigantic farce.

All this is put in place because the prisons are full, but are we building new prisons? No! Plans have come and gone, but none have been built. You cannot possibly turn hardened criminals from their chosen way of life unless the punishment is so severe they will not dare re-offend. At the moment its quite the reverse in fact.

The “Do Gooders’ and ‘limp-wristed’ Liberals are so set on making prison life as easy as possible with the intention of “giving the criminal a sense of morality and easing them back into society”. Its pretty obvious they have never been attacked or robbed! Prisoners are released on licence for days at a time during their sentence to allow them to ‘get used to being around people again’. There have been cases where criminals have ‘settled old scores’ on such breaks, meaning someone got killed.

The first job of any new government is to get these ‘Goody Goody’ idiots back out on the street where they can do no more harm, and put an end to all this pussy footing around.

There is a good case for bringing back the death penalty in whatever form, for only then will it be driven home to these lowlifes that the public will not stand for it any more. Kill and you will be killed.

There are of course many who stop short of actual murder but commit vicious crimes nevertheless. For these there should be a regime of hard labour awaiting them once convicted. It is time to end the period of criminals lounging around watching TV, using their computers or playing pool. It is time to stop taking young killers out for a day to Manchester or Blackpool, or to the cinema. It is time for more serious sentencing, because I see little point in a Judge sentencing a killer to 20 years with ‘a minimum of eight to be served’. If you give someone 20 years it should BE 20 years end of story, but Oh Damn! We can’t do that because the prisons are full and Amnesty Int. says every prisoner is entitled to his own cell with all the comforts of home! Atishooo! Sorry I’m allergic to bullshit!

Unless we bring back the death sentence for murder, torture and terrorism, start making prison a thing to be feared, and hand down sentences that fit the crime, we as a society are lost, for the crime rate will continue to spiral out of all control. After all, Britain has certainly the highest crime rate in Europe, and is probably only second in the world to the USA. Crime has not escalated to epidemic proportions in most other countries because they are not run by sleazy governments that are soft on crime, and have not handed responsibility for the running of prisons over to idiots. It is way past time that we returned to the strict regime of the 1940’s and 50’s.

Bringing back the death penalty will not only make killers think twice before committing murder, but it should also help to solve the prison overcrowding problem. Mind you, we may end up with a cemetery overcrowding problem then.

Ah Well! I guess you can’t have everything!

Whatever Happened to British Justice?

Posted in Britain, England, Insanity, Justice, Modern World, Prison, Theft, UK with tags , , , , on 26/12/2009 by floroy1942

Once again the British system of justice has failed by jailing a man for defending his home and family from three armed career thugs. To compound the error, the thug he caught has received a non-custodial sentence – AGAIN!

Millionaire businessman Munier Hussain, 53, returned home on September 3rd with his wife, 18 year-old daughter and two sons, to find their home being ransacked by three masked thugs armed with knives. The family were threatened and held at knife point, before being  tied up and told to lie on the floor if they did not want to be killed.

One of the sons managed to break free and ran to alert Mr. Hussain’s brother who lived close by. Mr. Hussain himself managed to break free and threw a coffee table at the three armed men. When they fled, he and his brother chased after them armed with a cricket bat and metal pole respectively.

They caught up with Egyptian born Waled Salem, 57, a career criminal with over 50 convictions ranging from possession of firearms, to fraud and theft, and set about trying to restrain him until the police arrived. For this ‘attack’, Mr. Hussain received a two-and-a-half year sentence, and his brother, who the judge said had less motivation, received three years and three months. The longest sentence Waled has ever received for any of his 50 crimes is 42 months, of which he served only half. For more than 70% of his crimes he has received no more than a fine or a Community Order i.e. a slap on the wrist.

Salem, who sustained a fractured skull and ‘brain damage’ from the ‘attack’ was given a non-custodial sentence by Judge John Reddihough in Reading Crown Court, he of course being viewed as the ‘victim’. He was heard by many people outside the court bragging to his son that the law could not touch him.

The Judge reasoned that the Hussain brothers had ‘used unnecessary force’ when apprehending Waled Salem. He said in summation “If persons were allowed to take the law into their own hands and inflict instant and violent punishment rather than letting the Criminal Justice System take its course, the rule of law and criminal justice would collapse”.

To that I have but one retort; Balderdash!!! (and I am being polite).

For a start, if Salem had got away, the chances of him being caught by the police were infinitesimal, and both he and the police know that. Most burglars get away with their crimes and are never caught because the police do not have the manpower or resources to catch them.

Also, if more burglars were tackled by their victims and put in hospital there would be less of them, because they may well think twice before taking the chance of being caught by an irate house-owner.

The aftermath of the affair has led to Hussain’s father having three strokes and his wife a heart attack. The family have since surrounded their house with alarms and surveillance cameras for fear that the other two, who have not yet been caught (see what I mean), will pay them a return visit.

The law enforcement system in the United Kingdom is totally incapable of protecting us honest citizens from the activities of criminals, as is evidenced by the soaring crime rate. In fact, it has been amply demonstrated that the law is actually on the side of the criminal, for they receive far more protection from it.

A recent law amendment states that a person may defend his property and family using only force that is ‘reasonable and not excessive’. But force that is reasonable to me may not be to you, and vice versa. It would seem the judge is left to decide.

If I and my wife are threatened by a knife or gun yielding thug and I belt him with a baseball bat, is that reasonable force? It would seem from Judge Reddihaugh’s standpoint I should ask him politely to go away, and if he refuses I should request he hold out his hand so I may give him ‘six of the best’ with a cane. Would that please your Lordship??

It’s time more Judges and MP’s were on the receiving end of crime.

The Latin Farce -A Mexican Prison Story

Posted in Insanity, Modern World, Police, Prison, Theft, USA with tags , , , , on 22/05/2009 by floroy1942

I have heard some crazy things in my time, but few can compare with the comic opera played out in a Mexican prison last Saturday.

According to reports released today, prison guards at Zacatecas Prison stood to one side while 53 inmates walked calmly past them and out the front door. Not one of the guards made any move to stop them.

At least 12 of the escapees are known assassins and kidnappers, members of Mexico’s powerful drug cartels. Among the other 41 are rapists and murderers. So far 11 have been described by Interpol as extremely dangerous, and a severe threat to the public world-wide. They must be laughing fit to bust at how easy it was. Not a shot was fired during the entire episode.

The whole sordid scene was captured on the prison’s security cameras (see clip) and would do justice to any of the comedy films coming out of Hollywood, all it required was Leslie Nielsen to make an appearance.

Thanks to the video footage, the real nature of the breakout was revealed, and now, the prison governor and the entire night shift of guards are themselves behind bars pending an investigation.

It would seem the drama unfolded with pictures of bored-looking guards watching TV while an inmate walks past them and releases prisoners from a cell block. They make absolutely no moves to stop him, or the released prisoners from walking out.

Meanwhile, outside the prison, a convoy of fake ‘Police’ vehicles draws up and the gate guards rush to let the ‘cops’ into the prison. They make no attempt to question the new arrivals and stand aside as they file in.

Eight gunmen, wearing jackets with Federal Police markings, enter the prison and escort the inmates to the waiting cars. All this time the guards are standing on the sidelines watching. The prisoners had also helped themselves from the guards armoury and many were armed.

After the ‘police cars’ drive off with their passengers, guards can suddenly be seen running to the gate with guns drawn. Reports say they were ‘overacting’ for the benefit of the cameras.

This whole sordid episode is symptomatic of what is wrong with the penal code in most ‘civilized’ countries these days. It makes no difference if we talk about Mexico, the USA, Britain, France, Germany or any other western nation, the problems are the same. Prisons have become holiday camps for the worst our societies have produced.

It must be said that in most penal institutions it is the prisoners who run the prison, not the governor or guards. In many English jails, the prisoners are allowed a lot of freedom, because those supposedly running the place think that is the way to head off trouble among the inmates.

Drugs are rife these days, and little, or nothing, is done to stop the flow. It has been reported that in many cases the drugs are brought in by prison personnel themselves, as well as visiting family members.

In Britain, statistics show the majority of prisoners released after serving their sentence go on to re-offend, so what happened to the deterrent? The simple answer is, it doesn’t exist any more. A custodial sentence today is a joke, and the ones laughing the hardest are the criminals themselves.

They look upon their sentence as a mere inconvenience, but hey, it’s not so bad living in a five star hotel for a couple of years.

The only things they miss are the freedom to move at will, and possibly, sex. But that is not necessarily true because there are alternatives to taking a woman to bed, if you know what I mean. So we are left with the restrictions on freedom.

Good meals, probably better than the wife makes, plenty of games, TV, film shows and libraries all go to make life a little easier for those incarcerated by society. Then there is always the extra curriculum activities as mentioned in the previous paragraph.

When all is considered, not a bad life for a serial killer, crime boss, drug peddler, murderer, rapist or child sex offender!

One of the more ridiculous reports I read some years ago, stated that prisoners would have curtains on the windows to cover up the bars, and so make them feel more at home. Naturally, it was a ‘Bleeding Heart Brigade’ suggestion. They constantly bleat on about prisoners ‘human rights’. So far as I am concerned, if you are a criminal the first thing you lose is the right to be treated like a decent law-abiding citizen.

The Police in most western countries are over-stretched trying to catch the crooks, and when caught, they get a ridiculously short sentence from the courts because the prisons are overcrowded.

It seems to me, all incentive for criminals to straighten themselves out and become honest citizens again, is today none existent.

Years ago they were so afraid of ending up ‘back inside,’ the majority never turned to crime again.

I think it is time for people to insist on sentences to fit the crime, and to re-introduce things like labour gangs. America has the right idea when it comes to chain-gangs. Make them work for their keep doing useful work for the community, like laying road foundations or digging ditches.

With modern technology I am sure we can make certain no-one escapes, or if they do, that they are captured quickly. Implant them with micro-chip trackers, so if they do manage to slip away it will be easy to locate them.

Whatever measures are taken, control of the prisons must be taken out of the hands of inmates, and the ‘softly, softly’ approach needs to go out the window. A strict regime must be introduced to ensure discipline in prisons, and that goes for the prison officers as well.

Anyone caught taking drugs into a prison should end up as an inmate, and anyone caught using should receive a mandatory 2 years on their sentence. Drug tests need to be introduced and enforced to ensure compliance.

The courts should ensure that sentences are more proportional to the crime committed, and this business of parole for ‘good behaviour’ for career criminals needs to be scrapped. Too many hardened criminals have got away with only doing a third of their sentence because they were ‘model prisoners’.

Let the justice system put some muscle into the words “if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.”
