Has The World Gone Crazy?

I think it has, and do you know why? Because the winter weather has caused major disruption all across the world, for we have never seen a season like this in my lifetime. We have huge amounts of snow all across Britain, USA and the most of Europe and it isn’t over yet. Never in my life have I seen a winter like this. People have frozen to death in the cold, and in Britain drivers have been trapped in their cars for as long as eighteen hours. This is unheard of. After the snow and ice is gone we will see major flooding across the United States and Britain, and many other countries. We have seen major rain and flooding in Far Eastern countries and it does not stop.

pexels-photo-307007

In summer the whole world is getting hotter, and even the north and south pole are disintegrating. Its all to do with the climate change, but some people  will just not believe it. We are filling our atmosphere with gasses from cars and factories, and this is causing the heat to remain around the Earth instead of dissipating into space.

pexels-photo-297927There are well over a million cars and trucks on our roads and most of them are diesel, which is polluting the atmosphere that we breathe. On top of this we have factories that are issuing poisonous gasses into the atmosphere, especially in places like China and India. Some governments, like the Germans are planning to stop diesel cars from entering city centres, but this will not cure the problem.

There is a plan to introduce electric cars onto the roads, but that is sometime into the future, and we will see how the power generators will find enough power to provide us all. I don’t think they will, for we will be short of energy until new power stations are built.

When summer comes we will see the hottest season with temperatures creeping up to the upper thirties. In some parts of the world the temperatures will reach over forty degrees. How will people survive in these temperatures? Already the farmland in Central Africa is so dry that people cannot grow crops anymore, and that is why we have so many refugees who are starving to death.

It is in times like these that all countries should turn to the United Nations for answers, but they do not seem able to help. All they do is talk, but do nothing. The United Nations should be a powerful body of people who are responsible for peace on Earth, and to solve the many problems, but they are incapable of doing this.

The one thing that gets me is that they do not have a majority vote in the U.N. Each time Russia blocks something that everybody else has voted for and this is no good. It should be a majority vote in the U.N. so that all sides have a say in what to do next. In Syria the battles between the rebels and and Syrian forces are continuing, and it will not stop despite the resolution passed by the U.N.

                     The New UN Logo

In my view the U.N. should have stepped in against the terrorists that have caused trouble all across the globe. For it is shameful they did not. Not since the Korean War in 1956 have they done a thing to stop trouble in the world.

It is shameful that the U.N. does nothing to stop the fighting in the world. In Africa they have stopped some terrorists from fighting each other, but the U.N. Army has been accused of raping African women in these countries and nothing has been done to stop them.

It seems to me that the U.N. is a waste of time, for they do nothing to stop the fighting around the world, and all they do is talk. It is getting to be a sad world, and we are heading for destruction of the planet.

Thank Goodness We Live On A Hill

Few people believe in Climate Change these days, even though the scientists have been warning us for years. People seem to ignore them and think that nothing has changed. Most are young and do not know what our climate was fifty or sixty years ago and therefore assume that what we get today is normal.

Well these pictures of Andalucia in southern Spain may change your mind. Nothing like this has ever been seen before, and it makes you wonder what next year will bring.

No More Renewable Resources for This Year

Posted in America, Britain, Conservation, Environment, European Union, Forests, Health, Modern World, News, Oceans with tags , , , , on 12/08/2016 by floroy1942
A True Statement

A True Statement

The time when the Earth’s natural renewable resources are used up is rapidly shrinking as year on year it happens earlier than the year before. Scientists say that we have already used up all the Earth’s renewable resources this month – August, just 221 days after the beginning of the year. This means that for the rest of the year we are adding to the pollutants in our atmosphere.

What this means is that now in August, over-fishing, over foresting and dumping more carbon emissions into the atmosphere than can be absorbed has reached its climax, and for the rest of the year we are adding more than the Earth can absorb. On average, it has moved up only one day a year over the past five years, compared to an average of three days a year since it started being tracked in the early 1970s. The future of life on this planet is steadily getting more and more dangerous as we continue to destroy that which we call home.

Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder and CEO of GFN and Balakrishna Pisupati, head of the biodiversity, land and governance programme with the United Nations Environment Programme, said “If humans continue to use the Earth’s resources at this rate it could have “disastrous consequences” in terms of climate change, the erosion of topsoil through the conversion of grasslands and forests into farmlands, and an overall loss of biodiversity. The longer we continue viewing natural resources as unlimited, the faster we are jeopardizing the very capacity of our planet to provide us with the renewable resources that we need to feed, clothe and shelter ourselves.”

I know that most people will just cast this off as nonsense because they do not see any changes in their daily lives, and think, “I don’t see any changes. What are they on about.” If the scientists are correct, our children and their children will suffer horrendously. That is something for everyone to think about.

With the amount of pollution that we pump into the atmosphere daily from cars, lorries, and factories, we are adding more than the atmosphere can absorb, so you really should start thinking about where we are headed.

Our continued reliance on fossil fuels is killing the Earth and we have no viable substitute. CO2 is steadily clogging our atmosphere, and there can be no doubt that average temperatures are rising year on year. I know because even where I live it has been much hotter than last year, and is set to increase even more next year.

It has been clearly recorded that temperatures are steadily on the rise on our planet which can be seen by the massive ice melt at places like the North Pole where most of it has disappeared. We are even losing our mountain glaciers at a fast rate. But there again, it is not affecting me at the moment so who cares they say

What happens when our planets resources finally run out, as they must do at some time in the future? We give them no time to regenerate, for we just take take take!

What happens when the oil runs out? No more cars, no more factories, no more gadgets because the factories had to close. Please don’t be so naive as to think that mankind will come up with an alternative source of power sufficient to power our world and industries, because it just will not happen in time.

We destroy forests at an ever increasing rate knowing full well that they are the number one oxygen suppliers to our planet. We rape the seas of fish to the extent that stocks are steadily decreasing,  and we poison the ground with chemicals just to get crops to grow because we have used up all the natural resources in the ground.

The think tank lauded the goals outlined in the Paris climate agreement which was adopted by nearly 200 countries in April. The GFN said “there is nothing holding back these nations from achieving the goal becoming carbon neutral by 2050 except for political will. Such a new way of living comes with many advantages, and making it happen takes effort. The good news is that it is possible with current technology, and financially advantageous with overall benefits exceeding costs,” he said, adding that the transition will stimulate emerging sectors like renewable energy while preventing the risk and costs tied to adapting infrastructure to the impact of climate change.

One thing is for sure, this cannot continue, for humanity will be in dire straits if we carry on as we are. I sincerely hope this hits home with at least some people, and they make changes to their daily lives to help save our world.

The California Drought – Worse To Come?

California Drought

California Drought

It was interesting to read today that the governor of California  Jerry Brown has imposed a state-wide restriction on water usage to combat the current severe drought, which is quoted as being “the worst in 1,200 years”, although how anyone can draw that conclusion is beyond me.

Sierra Nevada Snowpack

Sierra Nevada Snowpack – Jan 2013 and Jan. 2014. In 2015 None

Normally California’s water comes from melted snow in the Sierra Nevada, but experts who visited the mountain range found no snow whatsoever. This is bad news for California.  The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) said in a statement on Wednesday, “This was the first time in 75 years of early April measurements at the Phillips snow course that no snow was found there.” The DWR stated in a news conference that readings from Wednesday put the state’s water level  content at just 5% of the historical average for the date.

The drought has been going on for four years and is exacerbated by high temperatures, which indicate things are getting desperate. Last year the governor imposed a voluntary  water restriction that did not achieve much, so he has been forced to take the unprecedented step of imposing a mandatory 25% reduction in usage this year.

Lakes Are Drying Up

Lakes Are Drying Up

Californian’s have always had to battle drought during the hot summer months, but in recent years it has gotten worse as is indicated by the governor’s desperate measure to conserve this precious commodity. From the reports it would seem that farmers will not be covered by these restrictions for obvious reasons, but every household in the state will feel the effects.

During the last few years there have been regular reports of drought in the central states, along with many other places on Earth, and from the looks of things it will only get worse. Why? – Global warming, that thing that most people scoff at, and who’s existence they deny.

california-drought-waterScientists have for years been warning us of the consequences of this global phenomena, and slowly, but slowly they are being proven right. Year on year we see droughts where none existed before, plus larger and more destructive typhoons and hurricanes across the globe causing massive destruction.

Snow Plough Almost Buried In Snow - New York

Snow Plough Almost Buried In Snow – New York

Just this last winter we witnessed unprecedented winter storms with massive snowfall in the north-east of the United States, but still no-one believes there is something wrong.

The tragedy is, the longer we ignore this and refuse to each do our part in stopping it, the worse it will get. But what does it take to convince people? Perhaps not until it is too late will people wake up to this deadly danger. I hope not!

People Still Don’t Believe In Climate Change

Storm Surge

Storm Surge

Pictures in the Press and the TV news programmes have brought home once again the devastation caused by the weather. Britain and other North European countries only recently suffered hurricane force winds that caused a great amount of damage, and now it has happened again, breaking all previous records.

Philippines - whole towns destroyed.

Philippines – whole towns destroyed.

When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines recently, it killed more than five thousand people and caused billions of dollars worth of destruction to the country. The devastation was so widespread that it took a long time before help could reach some areas. With its force and strength it broke all records. Surely anyone with even an iota of intelligence should come to the conclusion that these weather phenomena are not normal.

The Heartache In The Aftermath Of Katrina

The Heartache In The Aftermath Of Katrina

The global weather scientists have been warning us for years that such things were about to happen. Even after Hurricane Katrina struck the Atlantic coast of the USA in 2005, people brushed it off. However, the kind of weather currently being experienced by Britain at the moment is unheard of. Way back in the forties, fifties and sixties the most we ever got in bad weather was a gale, that once in while reached wind speeds of 40 or 50mph. But currently you can add another 100mph on top of that.

Co2 Levels By Year

Co2 Levels By Year

So what is happening to our weather. Well, scientists believe it is all to do with the massive amounts of CO2 we are pumping into the atmosphere. If you believe the scientists, and there is no reason not to,  the current unusual weather can be traced back to that fact. The CO2 is hanging in the atmosphere and stopping excess heat from dissipating. In effect, trapping it in the atmosphere.

The Rescue Services Still At Work

The Rescue Services Still At Work

There can be little doubt, to all but the most hardened sceptics, that the planet is warming up because of the increasing CO2 emissions world-wide.  The proof is clear in the massive melting of ice caps at the poles. Never before has so much ice melted at the north and south poles. The sea ice has all but disappeared in the north,  just like the glaciers. For those who care to look, the evidence is all around us but ‘oh how blind are they that cannot see’.

A Train Driver Braves The Weather

A Train Driver Braves The Weather

There has been one international climate conference after another. All countries were to agree on measures to reduce CO2 emissions in an effort to at least slow down the global warming. The politicians might just as well have gone for a picnic by the sea for all the good they have done. Half-hearted measures were approved, but no-one stuck to them. It was ‘business as usual’.

Factory Pollution In The USA

Factory Pollution In The USA

The biggest polluter on the planet is the USA, but following a close second and third are the emerging economies of China and India. Naturally, these last two countries are loath to stop their progress towards becoming a force in the world as their manufacturing base grows by the day. With people becoming more affluent, they start buying cars for example, which is adding a huge burden to our climate along with the factories. The number of cars on the road in China has quadrupled in recent years as more and more people can afford to buy them. While the western nations have done much to make cars cleaner, this has not yet reached the emerging markets.

Floods Met With Traditional Stoicism.

Floods Met With Traditional Stoicism.

Britain has for the past twenty years or so years experienced extreme flooding in parts of the country, but this is usually in areas where houses have been built on floodplains, i.e. low lying areas near rivers etc. The extreme flooding of towns and villages on the coast due to excessively high tides was until recently a rarity. In the latest storm to lash the English coastline, a storm surge of 5.8 metres  was recorded. That’s close to twenty feet! Its no wonder cliff-top houses have been washed into the sea. It was reported that the tidal surge was so great, it forced, and held, so much water in the harbour at Whitby Yorkshire, that all the harbour front houses and businesses were severely flooded. Forced into the harbour by the surge with no other way out, the water had nowhere else to go but over the quayside.

Storm Causes House To Collapse

Storm Causes House To Collapse

Naturally, we have had heavy storms in the past, but records show they have never been as severe as at present. Looking at the news, you have to wonder where it will all end, and how bad will it be next time. Of one thing I am certain, we have no choice but to get used to it.

Haiti – What Happened to All the Money?

Posted in Britain, Environment, Haiti, Insanity, Modern World, Somaila, UN, United Nations with tags , , , , , , , , on 18/07/2010 by floroy1942

In times of crisis countries and governments are quick to offer aid and funds to people inflicted with disaster, as happened in Haiti on January 12th of this year. But now, six months on, has the lot of the Haitian people improved much? The sad answer is; No!

Devastation to Port Au Prince

Devastation to Port Au Prince

Country after country that has suffered a natural disaster, and the indescribable hardship to its population, face the same barren fact that the rich countries seldom live up to their promises. People made homeless, such as the Haitian population of Port Au Prince, continue living in makeshift shanties made of cardboard and wood scraps. So why are the Haitian people still living in shanty towns?

1 Billion Dollars

The EU promised $474m; Brazil $210m; The UK $32.7m; France $10.4m; the USA $100m, and Canada $131.5m. This is only the tip of the iceberg, for many smaller nations also pledged money for the relief of the suffering in Haiti.

In total, some $5.3 billion from 60 nations was pledged to help the Haitian people get their infrastructure back in some sort of working order, of that only 10% has actually been delivered, and most of that as cancelled debt. This means that very little has actually arrived to repair the devastation to the country’s infrastructure, in which little has changed. So why have the pledges not been fulfilled?

It would seem that after the disaster dropped from the world headlines, many governments took a second look at the huge amounts of money they had donated in haste, and the whole question of paying the pledges dropped into the quagmire of politics and bureaucracy, and will of course in time, be totally forgotten.

Shanty Town

In the last 50 years the world has reeled to 33 natural disasters, everything from famine, drought, earthquakes, hurricanes and epidemics and the total number of casualties registers in the billions. When disaster strikes it is natural for countries to seek outside help, for no one country has the money or resources to battle such an event alone. Even the United States was offered, and accepted, outside help for Hurricane Katrina.

Haiti Tent City

I am still of the opinion that an international organisation should be set up for the immediate, and long-term recovery of nations struck by natural disasters (I refer you to my blog Haiti Earthquake – Why Was the World Not Better Prepared? of 25 January 2010).

A Caribbean Hurricane

We are of course to blame, for our reliance on fossil fuels and our desperate need to own a car will be our undoing.

Meanwhile, the people of Haiti, Bangladesh, Africa and many others, continue to survive in squalor because nations cannot live up to their promises.

It is time for a change of strategy for YOU may be next!

Roy.
