A Wasteful Society

I could hardly believe what I read in the news today. Did you know that in Britain they literally throw away 10 million tonnes of food every year? I could hardly believe it when I read it,  for the figure seems impossible. It makes me wonder what the figure is in America and Canada, for they have much larger populations.

Spot The Difference

Spot The Difference

The average amount of good food that is thrown away by households in Britain is 260kg a year, and it makes me wonder why. With so many starving people in the world these figures are astounding.

One of the reasons is of course over production of food items in the country because of the great quest for profit. Secondly, it is the dates that producers put on their goods to show the maximum usage time for food which are not always accurate. Buying a loaf of bread would indicate that it must be eaten within, say three or four days, and then thrown away. It just means that after that period you need to go out and buy a new one – hence more profit for the bakery, the manufacturer and the farmer.

Much of our food will last way beyond the date that is stamped on it by the manufacturer, but many people don’t realize this, which leads to massive food waste.

A company in Britain has started gathering this food ‘waste’ and is providing a source of cheap food for those less well off. “The Real Junk Food Project”, started in Leeds, is gathering this so-called waste food from supermarkets, local businesses, restaurants and even allotments and selling it to the less well off.

The Real Junk Food Project

The Real Junk Food Project

People pay what they think the food is worth, not a fixed price, but can also work in the warehouse for the food they take with them. There can be little doubt that this company is a boon to those of us who are less well off.

But on the other hand, it is a disaster that so much food should be thrown away just because the expiry date has been exceeded.

As I mentioned before, all this food is being thrown away, while in many countries the people are starving to death. Of course it is not possible to ship this excess food to say Africa, but surely something can be done. Perhaps our farmers should be putting part of their fields aside to grow food that can be shipped to Africa and other starving nations.

Over-production is using up resources and killing the ground on which we grow our crops. In the end a large portion ends up in the rubbish bin. Why do we not scale back production to stop this drastic waste? No-one will consider that because it eats into their profits, and that is what its all about.

Spain’s ‘Illegal’ Deportations

Amnesty Internationl

Amnesty International

Spain has recently been castigated by Human Rights Groups complaining to the U.N. and the E.U. about the situation in Cueta and Mellila, two Spanish enclaves on the North African coast. For a long time migrants from many African countries have been trying to get into the Spanish territory in order to get to Europe.

For many months now hundreds of African’s have attempted to scale the 7m fence to gain entry while the Guardia Civil (Border Police), have been trying to hold them back. It is a fact that many running battles have been fought along the wire as the desperate migrants try to get into the Spanish side. Once there they expect to be transported to the mainland of Spain, and when admitted to the E.U. travel on, more often than not to Britain, hence the problems in Calais that hit the headlines recently.

Security Swamped By Those Trying To Get In

Security Swamped By Those Trying To Get In

Of late, the police tactic has been to round up those who manage to cross the fence and they are immediately shipped back to the Moroccan side. Personally I see nothing wrong with that, for both Cueta and Mellia are not very big, about the size of a small town, and just cannot handle the numbers trying to get in.

The Spanish government has been criticised  for passing an amendment to the laws on immigration that would allow all ‘trespassers’ to be immediately sent back to Morocco. But of course this has got the hackles up of the human rights bleeding hearts brigade, for they think these people should all be treated as refugees, given a cup of tea and sent on to wherever in Europe they want to go.

Cueta

Cueta

If these people were in charge Europe would be so full that Europeans would be moving out in droves, or there would be open warfare on the streets. However, don’t think I condemn totally the work done by Amnesty International or any of the other groups, for I don’t, I just believe sometimes they start shouting without thinking of the consequences.

Personally I would allow all these migrants in and then assign them to individual members of Amnesty International and the many other rights groups complaining. They would then be charged with taking them into their own homes, and caring and feeding them from their own pockets. Let us then see how long it would take for them to change their stupid minds. These idiots whinge and whine about human rights but do not themselves bear any of the hardship caused by these people. How long before they realize that the growing numbers of migrants just cannot be absorbed by European countries any more.

The Schengen Nations Of Europe

The Schengen Nations Of Europe

It is difficult to control the flow of migrants in Europe because of the Schengen Agreement passed many years ago that did away with internal border checks. We now have free travel all across the European countries without borders or passport checks. This has made life easy for the inhabitants, but makes it almost impossible to control the flow of migrants once they are on the European mainland.

Much of  the problem is caused by the trafficking gangs that operate far and wide in North Africa. They charge $2,000 to $3,000 to get these people to the northern border, and often put them in leaky boats to get them across the Mediterranean Sea. You have to ask how desperately poor people obtain that amount of money to pay these crooks. If they can get such a huge sum why are they trying to get to Europe. In most poor countries such an amount would keep their families fed and cared for for a couple of years. To help stem the flow it really needs an international effort to shut these gangs down.

Mellila

Mellila

I do not blame the migrants for seeking a better life in Europe, but somehow, sometime, it has to stop otherwise everything will fall apart. Europe cannot house and feed three quarters of Africa, the Middle East, and Pakistan. At some time in the future the flow has to stop. I do feel sorry for those who are trying to escape persecution and war, but many of them are really economic migrants who come here to Europe to find a job….or get the handouts.

Already Britain is full, with record numbers of unemployed, a collapsing national health and benefit system leading to economic disaster, plus a major housing shortage. We cannot even feed, house and educate our own properly any more because of too many immigrants, and still these bleeding hearts want us to accept more! The same is true in Holland, Belgium, Denmark, France and Germany and many other countries.

Night Crossing

Night Crossing

International law states that migrants may claim domicile in the first country they come to after leaving their own, but that never applies these days. These people pass through several countries to get to northern Europe where they seek a new home. Many are attracted by the generous benefits system of many European countries where their pockets are stuffed full of money without them lifting a finger, like Britain.

Border Guards

Border Guards

It is sad there is so much inequality in the world where in some countries inexcusable wars are being fought, and I can accept that people want to get away from the fighting. But they should be looking to neighbouring countries for help. Unfortunately, Europe is the big magnet for them all. People fleeing the endless secular wars in the Middle East should be finding assistance in other Arab countries, and admittedly some do, but the rich nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait have all turned their back on these people instead of joining together to do the right thing by people of their own race. Sure, they have refugee camps in places like Jordan by the dozen, but the standards of living in these places are little better than what they left behind because one nation cannot cope with the numbers. If Arabic nations put some serious effort into looking after their own people, perhaps with assistance from the UN and the richer nations, we might see some progress, and it would not be necessary for these desperate people to come all the way to Europe.

Bringing Water To The Desert

Bringing Water To The Desert

With the African nations it is not much different, and I believe nations should be helping these people by improving their life in their own country. In some areas desperate drought means crops cannot be grown and the people starve to death, so what if an international effort were to sort out this problem? By improving life in these places, giving them the tools to be self sufficient we can put an end to the mass migrations of these people. Just imagine that a €0.10 cent tax was imposed on all 741 million people in Europe, this would raise €74.1 million to provide water to the arid areas. Yes I know, that is but a drop in the ocean but how much would you raise over a year? Answer:- €889.2 million. That amount of money would go a long way to redressing the balance in many North African countries when spent wisely.

I just hope that the problems of the world can be successfully sorted out and sanity can once more return to humanity.

Ebola – Is The World Doing Enough?

Posted in America, Environment, Health, Nature, News, Nigeria, Politics, UK, United Nations, USA with tags , , , , on 03/10/2014 by floroy1942

It amazes me that we have a sickness that could destroy most of mankind on this planet if it got out of control, and on a global basis few people seem interested. There is no cure, and it is highly infectious as we have seen from the events of the past few weeks. And yet, despite this chilling fact, very few people seem to be taking the situation seriously.

Ebola Outbreak

Ebola Outbreak

Until recently all the cases were to be found in three West African countries, namely Sierra Leon, Liberia and Guinea and I guess because they are so far away, and in Africa, no-one seems alarmed. However, now a case has been diagnosed in the United States and suddenly people are taking notice. What most people do not realize is that it takes one person to start an epidemic in any country on the planet. This is what we could have seen in the States.

Thomas Eric Duncan, A Liberian National Visiting Family In Texas

Thomas Eric Duncan, A Liberian National Visiting Family In Texas

I know, we have not reached that stage yet thank goodness, but it could happen. One person, Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian national was diagnosed with Ebola over a week after arriving in the country. The incubation period for this disease is estimated at two to twenty-one days and once it manifests itself becomes highly contagious through bodily fluids.

The Texas authorities dealing with the case are trying to trace anyone who had contact with Mr. Duncan during his time there, and have so far identified 12 to 18. How many other people has he had contact with in that time?

Texas-Presbyterian Hospital

Texas-Presbyterian Hospital

What is dangerous about this case is that he visited the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on 25 September for a “low-grade fever and stomach pains” but was sent home again. The reason being, they did not recognize it for what it was, despite him saying he came from Liberia. Now the full scale of the problem has been made known it multiplies exponentially. Such diseases are a roller-coaster ride in that an infected person could conceivably infect someone, or several people, who then passes it on to more, who then pass it on to more. And so it goes Ad Infinitum. Before you know it you have a full-blown plague on your hands. OK, you can say that we are a bit more ‘savvy’ in our approach to such things than decades ago, but it is still a risk.

Ashoka Mukpo

Ashoka Mukpo

Now yet another man, a freelance news cameraman, Ashoka Mukpo has been flown to the States for treatment from Liberia. He had been hired by NBC News’ chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman and now the whole team are being quarantined in the USA.

When bodily fluids are the carrier, meaning sweat, blood and saliva, it is very easy for the disease to be transmitted on to someone else by for example, a handshake, a cup or beer glass, plus a hundred other things.

I am glad to say we have not reached the epidemic stage yet and I hope we do not, for you can be sure in America such an occurrence will be treated quickly and efficiently. But what if it was somewhere like India, Azerbaijan, or Mexico where the systems are not so efficient. Food for thought!

The People Who Should Be Controlling The Effort

The People Who Should Be Controlling The Effort

The one thing that surprises me is that the World Health Organization (WHO) has not taken more of a lead in this outbreak. They have relied on western countries to offer help to the people battling this outbreak in Africa instead of calling for international help from across the globe. But there again, it is a U.N. organization and they are probably still discussing what to do.

Reaction to the whole episode has been disgracefully slow by everyone, and in the meantime, more people are being infected and more are dying without proper help in Africa. There has been no coordinated response to the problem and that heightens the risk of a traveller from one of these three countries starting an epidemic somewhere. Once you have thousands of victims spread across many countries it will be almost impossible to control.

Liberian Village Life

Liberian Village Life

I am glad that western nations are stepping in to help these poor people, but to be honest, it is too little. Most of the infected areas are small villages where people are not educated and move around as and when they will. There have been many cases where the villagers just do not believe it when they are told by officials that they are in danger. There have been cases where officials have been beaten and even killed whilst trying organize these people to stop the spread of Ebola. They are simple folk with no understanding of such things.

This I believe is yet another reason why the WHO should be taking the lead on this epidemic by providing not only the medical expertise for the victims, but also in organizing the people so it does not spread any further.

Clearing The Bodies

Clearing The Bodies

Already there have been deaths in villages due to Ebola, but the local people do not know what caused the death and have taken no precautions against being infected. They just do not believe that they are in the middle of a plague area. The death toll is rising steadily with, according the the WHO, a total of 3,338 deaths. Liberia has been hit the hardest with some 1,998 deaths, Guinea with 710, Sierra Leone with 622 and 8 in Nigeria.

I certainly think it is time for a more coordinated effort to be made by the WHO in helping these poor people and ridding the world of this scourge.

Yet More Illegals – What To Do?

Posted in America, Benefits, Britain, Environment, European Union, Immigrants, News, Politics, Terrorism, United Nations with tags , , , , on 16/08/2014 by floroy1942

The headline today is of  illegal immigrants who got into the country in a freight container from Belgium. One died. The sad thing is, this is symptomatic of the desperate measures these people will go to just to get into Britain.

Desperate To Reach Europe

Desperate To Reach Europe

Most have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to reach the southern shores of Europe, and then head straight for Britain. The intervening countries like Italy, France etc. do not seem to be bothered, just so long as they are heading for Britain and do not settle in their own country.

Hopping A Train Through the Eurotunnel

Hopping A Train Through the Eurotunnel

Once on the northern shores of France or Belgium they look for any way to get across the Channel into Britain. Many containers have been found to hide illegals, sometimes because the driver has been paid off. Many have tried to get in by clinging to the underside of trucks or even walking through the Eurotunnel that connects Devon with the French coast.

Tony Blair - Probably The Most Hated Man In Brtian

Tony Blair – Probably The Most Hated Man In Brtian

The one common thing they all have is the desire to live in Britain! Any sensible person would have to ask why they would spurn the chance to settle in the first country they arrive in, which is in accordance with International Law. First of all getting accepted into Britain is a piece of cake, thanks to the traitor Tony Blair and his acolytes who threw open our borders to any Tom, Dick, or Harry that felt like living here. Secondly, as everyone knows, we throw around handouts in the form of benefits to anyone who is even vaguely interested in having them.

All immigrants get housed, fed and clothed at the expense of the UK tax payer while our own people line up at soup kitchens and cannot find a house to live in.

Having read the news item, the responses from readers were no surprise at all:

“As sad as this case is the illegals must not be granted asylum or provisional leave to stay in the U.K. That will only further encourage the several thousand waiting at Calais and the many thousands who cross the Mediterranean each week from the N.African coast to Italy.
Neither France nor Italy are seen as desirable countries by these illegals because they do not have the generous welfare benefits that are routinely handed out in this country. In fact the Italians and French seem more than happy to see them move on to the U.K.

This small island is stuffed full with an estimated 3 million non E.U. citizens having been encouraged to come into the country by Blair and Brown under the perverse guise of “multiculturalism.” The last census shows a population increase of 8 million in a decade. The effect on hospitals, schools, housing, welfare and social unrest is obvious and yet this current government is so in thrall to the European Court of human Rights and the Immigration Industry that it cannot even deport vicious criminals let alone illegal immigrants. I despair at the once Great Britain that my white grand children will inherit or, more likely, in which they become a minority race.”

Another entry reads:

“This whole fiasco is becoming a joke.My daughter lives in Spain and she said over 1000 arrived in boats just over 3 days last week, they are questioned and released but all are aiming for the UK. We must stop this inflow as we are creaking at the seams now. Stop all benefits of any type to anyone who has not paid in for at least 2 years and this might deter people from the land of milk and honey.”

These are just a snapshot of what the ordinary people are saying on the subject of immigration, and its clear the people want the government to shut the borders firmly against these people.

EU Immigration

EU Immigration

I am well aware they are suffering in their own land and want a better life, who doesn’t, but Britain has reached saturation point and it has to stop. If the European countries are so hell bent on helping these people then let countries like Poland, Chechnya, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland and many other European lands take their share. The western countries like Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Denmark have more than their fair share.

Our government needs to set a precedent by making a it a rule that no immigrant is entitled to benefits until they have paid into the system for a minimum of three years.

Begging On The Streets

British Man Begging On The Streets

The ones found in the container were immediately whisked off the hospital where they received immediate treatment, food and clothing while the queuing local people were told to wait. I have no qualms about them being given medical aid if they are sick but its like the whole system just dropped everything else and concentrated on them because they were illegals.

The big question now is what will happen to these people and the thousands like them? The way our stupid government  works, instead of being sent back where they came from they will receive housing, clothing, medical care, benefits, and most probably British citizenship and a passport all for free and then be allowed to settle here permanently.

That is the big mistake our government always makes, for such treatment encourages others to come here in their tens of thousands. No other European country is so free with handouts, and that is why they all want to come here.

Naturally, the EU Open Border Policy is as much to blame as anything else, which is another good reason to get out now so we can at least control our own borders.

Middle East Curse

Middle East Curse

One thing the European Parliament has to understand, is that within the next ten years or so much of the Middle East, and almost the whole of North Africa, will be trying to get into Europe for a better life. The insurgent problems in this whole region are driving people out of their homeland and the one obvious sanctuary is Europe. It is of course not only the insurgents, but also Climate Change that is making many parts of Africa uninhabitable.

While I sympathise with the plight of these poor people with no further prospects of the good life they once had, to stop the steady flow of refugees to Europe, it behoves us to help them in a way that they can continue to live in their own land. All of these problems world-wide are the result of our uncaring attitude to the planet and what it needs from us.

Water In The Desert

Water In The Desert

There can be little doubt that Europe cannot house the entire inhabitants of North Africa and the Middle East, not to mention Pakistan and India,  on top of our own, so we must help in the ways I have described. Let us jointly work towards providing water to the parched desert areas where the inhabitants try to grow crops.

Environmentalists say the best way to save whole areas of Africa from drought is to plant trees that will change the weather patterns and bring back the rain. They will also hold the Sahara desert at bay. Sure, it will take perhaps a millions trees, but we have the resources, and the time, just!

So far as the Middle East is concerned, we need an International Brigade of fighters to go into Iraq, Syria, Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia and any other country where these insurgents are fighting, and wipe them out to a man. It does no good just to ‘cut off the head of the snake’ because it will immediately grow another one. There will never be peace in the world so long as these fanatics are alive.

UN Army - Perhaps To Fight Global Terrorism?

UN Army – Perhaps To Fight Global Terrorism?

Every problem has a cause and a cure, and so far as the mass immigration to Britain and the rest of Europe is concerned we must be seen to tackle the cause of why these people wish to come here. Our island is full to bursting and the indigenous people are suffering heavily to cater for those who are fleeing adversity. All the western countries are suffering the same problems to a greater or lessor degree, and we the rich nations of the world, need to take a positive stand to help these people so they they will no longer need to come to our shores.

I am aware that its easy to sit here and write this stuff, but unless the right action is taken by all nations to eradicate these problems, humanity is headed for its own destruction.

Musings On What To Do About Immigrants

Landfall - If They Are Lucky

Landfall – If They Are Lucky

Over the last week there has been not one, but several incidents regarding loss of life among people from Africa and the Middle East trying to get to Europe by boat. One boat sank with the loss of 369 lives off the coast of Lampedusa Italy, another sank off the coast of Malta with thankfully less lives lost, but still they come. Without doubt these are desperate people, the majority fleeing the fighting in many countries caused by Islamic groups like al Shabaab, the sectarian violence in Iraq, and of course the fighting in Syria. Many are coming in the hope of making a better living for themselves in Europe, the so-called ‘economic migrants’. Whatever their reason, the numbers are increasing daily as more and more make their way to some spot on the North African coast in the hope of making it across the Mediterranean.

The tragedy of this whole saga, is that these desperate people are being used by gangs as a means of making huge amounts of money by ‘Trafficking in Misery’ if you want to give it a name. It is easy to understand why these people wish to come to Europe, the first being, they are no longer shot at and terrorized by despicable Muslim insurgents who are undermining governments in poor countries with the idea of taking over and forming a Muslim state under their control.

No Parent Should Have To Watch Their Child Dying Of Hunger

No Parent Should Have To Watch Their Child Dying Of Hunger

Second is the sheer poverty in which many of these people live, with little food or water and no decent home. Europe to them is a shining beacon in the darkness where they will eat decent food, sleep in a bed, get a job and be able to support their families, or in Britain’s case, get it all for free without having to work. They do not care how they get here, just so long as they do.

Overloaded Refugee Boat

Overloaded Refugee Boat

But sad to say, there are evil people out there who see this as an easy way to make lots of money. Buy an old leaky boat, fill it well beyond capacity with desperate people, and charge $1,000 per person for the trip across to Europe. If the boat sinks halfway across who care’s, there are plenty more customers where they come from. If the boat by any chance makes it there and back it can be filled up again.

A Sinking Refugee Boat

A Sinking Refugee Boat

Sometimes these gangs fight among themselves and then we see a situation like that off the Libyan coast a few days ago. The boat was full of Syrian refugees and was shot at last Friday by gang members as it left the coast of Libya, and some were badly wounded before they even got out of territorial waters. The boat made it close to Malta before it too sank, leading to the deaths of 31 people and the rescue of a further 200. At a thousand dollars a head that is a minimum of $231,000 profit, minus the cost of the boat of course. That is just from one boatload of desperate people who will do anything to get away from war, terrorism and deprivation.

In all, 15,000 people made the journey to Italy and Malta from North Africa in 2012, but that has now risen to 30,100 in the first nine months of this year, more than double, and the year is not over yet.

The one thing we can be sure of is that this figure is going to continue to rise year on year as more and more desperate people look to the ‘Promised Land of Europe’ for a better life.

Immigrant Numbers

Immigrant Numbers

Britain is already overcrowded with immigrants, evidenced by the virtual collapse of the National Health System, the Benefits System, the lack of housing and rising unemployment. Most immigrants will travel right across Europe to get to Britain for its free handouts with its lax rules brought in by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown during the Labour years. Other countries like Holland, Germany, France, Italy and Spain have also taken in immigrants, but not in such huge numbers and their handouts are much tighter controlled. Few immigrants want to move to Poland, Chechnya, Slovakia, Serbia or Romania because the standard of living is not as high as the Western European nations and they will get no handouts there.

The migrant numbers will steadily increase year on year until we reach a stage where the whole of Western Europe is full and cannot take any more. Then all hell will break loose. It is easy to say, as most people do; “Send them back where they came from” but it is not that simple. It will not stop them trying again and again for such is the behaviour of desperate people.

Africa - The Dying Continent

Africa – The Dying Continent

Whether you believe it or not, Africa is a dying continent, particularly in the north. Year long droughts are commonplace in countries like Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Sudan and others bordering the Sahara, there is little land to support any agricultural activity, and precious water is becoming more scarce as the years go by. In perhaps another ten or fifteen years this land, and all the nations upon it will be practically unlivable except for the few. As you would expect, this will cause a mass migration to lands where life is more sustainable, and guess who will be in line, you got it, Europe.

So now we come to the big question, what to do about it? In my opinion the first thing we need to do is shut down the trafficking gangs, and secondly we need to put an end to this ‘Holy War’ that the Muslims have started, both of which will take an international effort. The first is a purely a police, and perhaps military matter, where all resources are used to track down and put out of business these traffickers in misery. The second, as you would expect, is much more difficult and will take some time.

Muslim Militants

Muslim Militants

To put all these insurgent groups out of action needs the cooperation of Arab States, and the Muslim people as a whole to condemn what these people are doing. They should let these groups know they are not fighting for the good of Islam, and what they are doing is against the Muslim scriptures. This is a Muslim problem that needs to be solved by Muslims, for if it is only western nations that take on the task, as now, it will only incite more hatred and play into the hands of these groups by driving even more Muslims into their arms. I do not believe the current methods, as employed by many western nations, is going to solve the problem. We have to convince the Arab States and the Muslim people that this is the only way, a united effort.

Are these two measures attainable, well, the first maybe, but the second is doubtful unless the leaders of Islamic nations can be persuaded to take part.

Africa Migrant Routes To Europe

Africa Migrant Routes To Europe

One thing that will work above all others is for the rich Western nations to do something positive about conditions in these poor countries. Use whatever means is necessary to ensure an ample water supply for crops, better housing and education, and help these countries to grow out of the 200 year old time trap they are caught in.

The Expanding Sahara

The Expanding Sahara

There have been discussions with scientists over the years about the deteriorating situation in North Africa, and they are of the opinion that trees should be planted to change the weather patterns for the region. Sounds fanciful I know, but it is a proven fact that trees in sufficient numbers generate rain, and the idea of planting a few million trees along the border of the Sahara desert would bring rain to those areas and stop the desert sand from encroaching further, which it currently is, year on year.

Our constant removal of land-sized areas of rain forest across the world is one of the reasons we now suffer from climate change, and yes I know, many think this is rubbish, but data gathered over time proves it to be true.

Something We Take For Granted, But Life To These People

Something We Take For Granted, But Life To These People

In many parts of North Africa there is water in the ground but the local people have neither the resources nor the equipment to drill for it, and so they die. We do have the technology and equipment.

I am well aware that western people worship the almighty God of profit above all other things, and we have become greedy beyond description, but this is the future of our planet and our nations that is at stake for generations to come. If the governments of wealthy nations could come together to provide these people with a reasonable standard of living they would no longer be compelled to try and enter Europe in droves in the future.

Herein Lies The Future Of The World - Working Together

Herein Lies The Future Of The World – Working Together

I am well aware of how simple it is to sit down and write about this and put forward suggestions, but the germ of an idea must start somewhere, and if it is passed on then maybe our politicians can eventually be made to see the error of their current ways and governments might get the idea that they must start working together to head off this catastrophe that is coming our way.

If the world population continues to grow at its current rate the planet will be unable to sustain such numbers in many parts of the world, and this will mean wars on an unprecedented scale as the poorest and most deprived among the world population start to fight the richer nations for the basics of survival.  Only some form of action now to improve the lot of these people will head off this terrible event.

The Children Are Dying

Posted in Atlantic, Britain, Children, England, Environment, Forests, Health, Human Rights, Oceans, Somaila, Spain, UK, UN, United Nations, USA with tags , , , , , , , , , on 26/09/2011 by floroy1942

Children are dying daily, and almost no-one notices. It is a sad fact that very little Press coverage is given to the human suffering in Africa, where hundreds of people are dying of hunger and disease.

It is not unusual for such occurences to be pushed from the front page of the newspapers by the attention-grabbing headlines about Libya, the Palestinian situation, and the economic crisis. These stories attract readers, while the problems in Africa have been going on for decades. The sad truth is, the story is just not newsworthy.

It does not detract however from the huge suffering encountered in so many African nations. While small children, and grown-ups, are dying by the hundreds every day on this strife-torn continent, the rest of the world looks on and says; “Oh Dear! What a shame! What’s happening in Libya?”

A Dying Child

Aid, such as basic foods and medicine, have for decades been pumped into various African States by well-meaning governments and aid organizations, but it doesn’t help very much. It has reached the stage where the populace live from hand-to-mouth, relying totally on the aid groups. With this attitude, there is little justification for the respective governments to take long-term measures to fix the problem once and for all time.

What Happens To Aid In Africa

Part of the problem is without doubt the massive corruption and theft of not only money, but aid goods also.

Given As Aid – But Sidetracked To The Local Market

Many corrupt politicians and officials have made themselves rich by siphoning off money from donations. It is an everyday sight in many North African towns to see sacks of aid grain for sale openly in the markets.

There is not much by way of a ‘self-help’ programme that will get water to the areas of drought and famine. Water is always scarce in Africa, but there must be ways of getting this precious commodity to the parched areas of the country.

We lay pipelines for thousands of miles to carry oil to those that need it, but to lay the equivalent for water seems quite impossible. Why? We have laid oil pipelines from  Russia to Western Europe with a distance in excess of 2,000kms, and yet Lake Turkana is only 700kms from central Southern Sudan, and Lake Victoria is just over 1,000kms! Surely, it must be possible to have pipelines carrying water from the great African lakes and rivers, or even desalinated water from the sea, to make these barren lands fertile once more. Once the ground is fit for purpose, it is necessary to plants huge areas of trees.

I can hear the question ‘why’ already.

Rain Forests Of The World

Think for a moment where the most rain falls annually on our planet. If you check your maps, you will find it is mostly in heavily forested areas such as the Amazon, African and Far East rain forests, which is why they are called ‘Rain Forests’. Trees have the ability to change weather patterns like nothing else on the planet. A century ago there were many trees in northern Africa, and the climate was more stable than it is now.

Britain has seen dramatic changes in weather patterns in the last fifty years, ever since huge swathes of woodland were removed to make room for crop growing. Even Romania on the other side of Europe suffers in the same way.

The Green Wall – An Environmental Group Plan

It is inescapable that much of the African problem has been caused by the people themselves. Their only source of fuel in these poor areas is wood, and over the last century, trees have slowly disappeared from the landscape, and now there is not a single one left. This is one of the reasons why the Sahara Desert is continually growing in size by an estimated 30 miles per year. It doesn’t sound much until you see how it has grown since the middle of the last century. Trees bind the soil together and prevent erosion, and in the long term, eventually ensure sufficient rainfall.

If the soil can be made fertile enough to support such growth again, turning back the clock and revitalising the near desert areas of Africa will, in many years time, bring back the rain.

I know it sounds simple, and I can hear many people scoffing at the idea from here, but take one example.

Senseless Destruction Of The Amazonian Forest

The Amazon Rain Forest was once the mightiest forest on the planet, until greedy men started chopping it down. Now, huge swathes of this important forest no longer exist, and what do we have? This year the area suffered its first drought! Drought in the Amazon Rain Forest is unheard of!

As a subsequence of this malicious attack, we have now made a major change to the weather patterns in the Atlantic, which in turn have affected the weather in the Caribbean, the USA and even Europe.

I Would Never Be A Sailor! An Atlantic Storm

It is impossible to say that the destruction of the rain forests is the only reason for these weather phenomenon, for the warming of the oceans has also played a part, but I think this is more the reason for the increase in hurricane and typhoon activity.

Rain Forest Cleared For A Palm Plantation

This whole scenario has been duplicated to a similar degree in Africa and the Far East. In places like Indonesia and Borneo, whole tracts of rain forest are being destroyed to make way for palm trees. So why you might ask, do they want to plant so many palm trees? Palm oil is used for the production of biofuels that are supposed to help save the planet! Now there’s an irony!

So now you may understand my drawing the conclusion that forests have a significant effect on the weather!

Of course, part of the problem is cost. The countries that need it are not in a position to finance such a venture, but then why should the rich nations of our planet, or the IMF, not foot the bill? Of course it will be expensive, and require huge investment by the rich nations, but is this not preferable to the African Continent continually draining money from the world economy for the next thousand years? For there is little doubt, the problem is only going to get worse!

Money Wasted On Aid?

I would hate to estimate how much money has been donated by individuals, charities and governments over the last forty years or so to help the poor of Africa, but you can imagine it must run into trillions of dollars. Would that money not have been better spent on a long-term solution, or are these same people willing to spend another trillion dollars in the future?

While poor, the people of Africa could sustain themselves if their land was fertile enough to produce the food they need. It is in this area that aid would be most useful.

Unless we can motivate the African people, and countries can come together to make their lands fertile again, they will never be able to get out of the abyss they currently find themselves trapped in.

Roy.
