Sometimes I Really Do Despair At My Fellow Man

In my lifetime I have seen major changes in the way people live their lives, but today I read about a case that is more than shocking. The incident was to say the least despicable, but is a good example of how uncaring people have become. I fully realize that not all people are bad and am grateful for that, but it still leaves an increasing proportion of ordinary folk who will stoop lower than the animals on this planet of ours.

The incident took place in Leigh, Greater Manchester in the UK last Wednesday when an 82 year-old woman was hit by a truck and left dying. While she was lying in the road a man walked up to her, stole her purse then walked off! I have to admit that in all my years I have seldom heard of such a callous act from a human being.

The police were called by witnesses but when they arrived the woman was dead. Detective Sergeant Neil Lawless who attended the incident said: “This is one of the most disgusting crimes I have ever investigated and I find it hard to believe someone could stoop so low to commit such a horrific offence. This man has taken what he sees as an easy opportunity by stealing a purse from a dying woman.”

Sadly, this kind of incident is not restricted to the shores of Britain for last month two men stole the wedding ring, purse and ifone from a  woman who suffered a brain aneurysm while buying food for her family at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Wichita, Kansas.

Again in Britain, Rochelle Palmer, 25, of Oakfield Road, Croydon, turned up at a pensioner’s sheltered housing complex in Eden Road on December 11, and asked to use the toilet. She asked for a cup of coffee and while the old gent was in the kitchen making it she stole bank cards, two rings and £85 cash.  Later that evening she used the cards to withdraw £500 cash and made purchases totalling £440 using the stolen plastic, police said. Ten days later she had the gall to return to the pensioners house, pushed him to the ground and took £180 from the coffee table. In total, Palmer stole £1,200 from her vulnerable victim. I am ashamed to say that after she was sentenced she only received 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to theft, fraud by false representation and robbery at Croydon Crown Court.

What have I said before about British Justice being soft on crime! For such a heinous crime she should have received at least two years.

Cases of this nature give a good indication of the depths to which certain people today will go for a small reward. When I was a young man this sort of thing was unthinkable. I remember that my grandparents never locked the door to their house. Not at night, and not even when going away for a two-week holiday. Their house was never broken into in all the years they lived.

Nowadays, leave your door unlocked for a minute and some lowlife will sneak in and steal whatever they can get their hands on. In England it is quite common for houses to be robbed while the family are watching TV in the front room!

There can be little doubt that as the years progress it will get worse for, in England at least, the courts are soft on crime and never hand out a sentence intended to deter future transgressions. People today are constantly looking for something for nothing, and sadly, more often than not, they find it which makes them want more.

I am well aware there are still kind, generous people out there still willing to help those less fortunate, but these days that just makes them victims. As these tales show, old folks are the most vulnerable and are constantly targeted by the heartless among us.

I makes me wonder what people will be like in, say, fifty years time. I dread to think!

Ferguson Aftermath

Posted in America, England, Equality, Justice, News, Police Complaints, Relationships, Teen Violence, Theft, USA with tags , , , on 06/01/2015 by floroy1942

Finally the fury following the police shooting of an unarmed black thief in Ferguson and the following deaths of unarmed blacks in Utah and New York have died down, and life is for the most part returning to normal. But since those events some interesting facts have come to light.

Some NYPD Officers Turn Their Back As The Mayor Speaks.

Some NYPD Officers Turn Their Back As The Mayor Speaks.

Chief among them was the ‘revenge’ killing of two New York police officers as they sat in their car. During one of the funerals last weekend it was notable that many of the police officers turned their back on the Mayor as he was giving his address to the gathered mourners.

Black Gang

Black Gang

This entire episode of the last five months has brought to the surface the deep antagonism between the black population of America and its white citizens. For their part the black population, especially in the more deprived areas, seem to be of the opinion that life owes them something, and this also true of the Hispanic populations as well.

For these people the idea of getting a good education and a job are foreign because they think there are easier ways of making a living, and that usually involves crime. Just take a look at the following:

2010 American Crime Statistics

2010/12 American Crime Statistics

When you read the above statistics it sheds light on one of the reasons why there is so much distrust of blacks in America, because they account for by far the largest proportion of crime, be it drugs, rape, robbery or murder.

They Did It - Why Can't You!

They Did It – Why Can’t You!

What these people need to learn is that if you want to make something of your life you have to work at it, i.e. integrate, get an education and then a job. Always try to get higher up the ladder by improving, rather than sit on your heels and expect someone to give you everything you need. The important thing to remember is that you have to do it yourself, for there are no ‘free rides’ in today’s society.

To a great extent a lot of the blame must fall on the parents, because they are the guiding light for any child growing up. If they have the will to push their children to make something of themselves despite their own failures, we would see more integration between the different communities in America. The following picture tells a lot about the attitude of parents to their children and crime:

A Black Parents View Of Black Crime

A Black Parents View Of Black Crime

From the looks of the placard held by this father, robbing a store is part of everyday life and I guess for some that’s true. It is a police officers sworn duty to uphold the law, so what do these people think he should do when a black teenager runs out of a shop with a gun in his hand after robbing the place? The teenager is certainly not going to put his gun down and allow the police officer to arrest him. So the inevitable happens.

Corner Stone Of A Strong Country

Intergration – Corner Stone Of A Strong Country

If the black population decided together to leave the ghetto’s and fully integrate with the white population who knows what could be achieved. It is certain that to begin with the road would be difficult for their will still be the basic distrust among the white citizens for the black man, but by hard work and advancement this could eventually be overcome.

If the black population really want to integrate there is no real reason why America should not have a true black or Hispanic President at sometime in the future, if that person has made the effort to improve him/herself sufficiently.

All Americans need to understand that to move forward together, they have to work together, for it is only in this way that the country can fully prosper.

Race hatred is a bad thing, but like it or not, we all share the same planet and must learn to live with one another.

Benefit Cheat Gets Off Lightly

Posted in Benefits, Britain, England, Health, Insanity, Justice, News, Old Age Pensioner, Theft, UK with tags , , , , on 06/06/2014 by floroy1942

Daily we hear of the British Justice System failing to do its job, which to my mind is to deter criminals from their lifestyle, but once again it has failed.

Janet Curtis - Benefit Cheat

Janet Curtis – Benefit Cheat

This time its about a 64 year-old woman called Janet Curtis from Clacton who cheated the benefit system out of £140,000. She claimed benefits from the district council and the Department for Work and Pensions, saying that rheumatoid arthritis meant that she could not walk more than three metres without extreme discomfort. According to her she was wheel-chair bound.

On top of that she claimed she was unable to function independently and required 24-hour care, so she received additional benefit because she needed a live-in carer and therefore needed an additional bedroom.
Curtis continued to falsely claim housing and council tax benefits for her former home in Martlesham Heath, Suffolk, for more than a decade after moving out and living with her partner in Clacton, the council said.

Doreen Savage, the council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “This was one of the most prolonged and serious cases of fraud which our investigators have ever had to deal with. Curtis’s web of deceit stretched back to the 1990s and only stopped when she was caught”.

Curtis Water-Skiing

Curtis Water-Skiing

She enjoyed lavish foreign holidays including one in Florida where she was filmed water-skiing. Water skiing ? Not bad for someone with crippling arthritis! When the video clip was discovered she was arrested for fraud and charged.

But this is where the justice system failed yet again. The judge reviewing the case in the Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty and promptly sentenced her to an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and a six-month curfew order. A suspended sentence? What a ridiculous farce, and I might add, what use is a curfew order? Is that so she cannot go on a water-skiing holiday for six months? I call this sentence pathetic.

What further annoys me is there is no mention of regaining the misbegotten gains she made defrauding the tax payer. Why does she not at least have to do community work for free as some form of recompense for the money she stole?  Her house should be taken from her and sold to help repay all that she cheated out of the system, but no, she gets off almost Scot free.

I fail to see how judgments such as this are likely to stop other people who wish to, or are doing the same thing. The country has people who barely have money for food, and old age pensioners who have to choose between heating and food to survive throughout the winter, and this woman gets away with cheating the system of £140,000 for more than ten years. There are people serving a prison sentence for not paying their TV licence and yet this evil woman gets away with it. It’s preposterous!

The only way this country is going stop this kind of crime is to hand out stiff sentences. I can only guess the judge took pity on her because of her age, but that is no excuse. Sad to say, the current legal system in the UK is far from a deterrent, in fact sentences are so light it encourages people to break the law for they have no fear of the consequences.

Let us hope that at some time in the future Justice will get back to what it should be.

Absurdity Of The Highest Degree

Posted in Britain, Conservative Party, England, Government, Human Rights, Justice, Politics, Prison, Theft, UK with tags , , on 14/08/2013 by floroy1942

I cannot believe that a so-called ‘educated’ man can tell the government that we should not send thieves and fraudsters to jail!  Prof Andrew Ashworth, a ‘legal expert’, and Vinerian Professor of English Law at Oxford University, has produced a pamphlet  to be distributed in which he says that jail time should be reserved for those “who commit crimes of a violent, sexual or threatening nature”.

Prof Andrew Ashworth

Prof Andrew Ashworth

He also argued against imprisoning repeat, non-violent offenders. He said, “for ‘pure property offences’, including theft, handling of stolen goods, criminal damage and fraud, imprisonment was disproportionate”. In his words, “Instead, the priority should be to deal with such offences in the community, giving precedence to compensation or reparation for the victim and, where the offence is sufficiently serious, imposing a community sentence.”

He claims that some 20,000 people go to prison each year for theft or handling stolen goods, 5,000 for fraud and 1,000 for criminal damage. The effect of his policy would reduce the number of men serving prison sentences by 8% (5,000 men) and women by 21% (700 women), saving around £230m each year.

Mugger In Action

Mugger In Action

O.K. clever dick, how you ‘compensate’ a couple who have been robbed of everything of value in their house? Pass the buck onto the insurance company who will pay a fraction of the value of the stolen articles, if they pay at all?  How do you ‘compensate’ old age pensioners who have been robbed of their most cherished possessions gathered over many years, and who may suffer serious illness as a result of the loss? What planet does this idiot live on, certainly not ours! It seems fairly certain that this pontificating fool has never been robbed or assaulted by a criminal. Perhaps he should go and talk to the many victims of crime before mouthing off!

This has raised a huge response from the public and many are saying that prison time does not stop re-offending, which is often true. So let us look at this argument and bisect the problems involved with keeping crime off our streets.

All The Comforts Of Home

All The Comforts Of Home

I agree with most of the comments that currently, prison does not stop the majority of criminals from re-offending, but that is for one simple reason, ever since the introduction of the Human Rights Laws we have been forced to turn our prisons into something resembling a holiday camp compared to the past.  We see often enough pictures of prisoners playing pool, lounging around, and of course every one has a TV, music and /or games centre in their cell. They have curtains on the windows so the sight of the bars will not traumatized them (oh my goodness, heaven forbid that they should be traumatized!), and the days of them doing hard labour are long behind us. Many of the custodial sentences handed out by the court, IF they get one, are so lenient as to mean nothing for the average criminal. For all the good prison does these days in getting criminals back ‘on the right path’ we might as well sentence them to a year in Butlin’s. Statistics have consistently shown that most of those sentenced to less than eighteen months automatically return to crime, sometimes within days of release.

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

On the other hand, those who get Community Service have no incentive to ‘go straight’. It is a fact that most times they do not turn up for work, and when they do they skive off somewhere. There is almost no supervision, and those sentenced to it find it a joke. There is absolutely no incentive whatsoever for an habitual thief or thug to turn away from crime, mainly because it pays well, and even if caught there is practically no comeback. Judges are consistently giving lighter and lighter sentences to hardened criminals to relieve the ‘over-crowding’ in our prisons and keep the Human Right’s Nutters happy.  Their argument is that even a serial child molester/rapist or serial killer has the right to his own cell  along with all the comforts of home.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with there being two, three, or even four prisoners to a cell and if they don’t like it, don’t do the crime! All the comforts currently enjoyed by serious criminals should be removed until they are left with a bed, a wash basin, and a toilet. For most less serious crimes, even six months of living in those conditions would be enough to deter all but the hardened criminal away from crime. The sentence received would be dependent on the criminal record and the crime. Serious offenders would live in the same conditions, but for a much longer period. Another factor is that criminals should be made to do hard labour 12 hours a day. All this pussyfooting around with pool tables, TV’s etc should be banned.

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

As for the joke known as Community Service, that should be banned entirely and replaced with prison time, for even three months in a prison with a harsh regime will be enough to persuade most, if not all petty criminals that crime does not pay. At the moment it does, and criminals are making large amounts of money at the expanse of the pain and misery of their victims. It has to stop, and to hell with their human rights until such time as they can prove themselves to be fit to re-join society. We can at least be happy that the Justice Minister Damian Green has rejected the proposals outright as he should.

In a speech to Magistrates in Canary Wharf London Mr. Green said “I think that would not just send the wrong signal to criminals and the public, it would send the wrong signal to victims. Repeat offending, even non-violent theft, can be a huge problem for an individual family, for an individual victim and can often blight a whole community. Habitual, prolific offenders should have the fear of prison hanging over them.” I agree with that except for one point, what is there to fear from a prison sentence these days except the loss of freedom of movement?

The Victim Support Group had this to say:  “Victims tell us they want more than anything else the punishment to fit the crime and for the criminal not to re-offend”.

Quite right I say, make criminals wish they had never crossed the line! There is too much emphasis on the criminals Human Rights and not enough on the victim! That has to change.

So Starbucks Finally Paid Up!

"We Keep Our Bucks"

“We Keep Our Bucks”

I read with interest this last week that the coffee chain Starbucks have finally paid the UK tax man the Corporation Tax they owe, or at least part of it. So that’s one down and more to come, hopefully, with Google and Amazon the remaining main defaulters. We, the less well off, seldom get a chance at the opportunities these big multi-national companies have to duck taxes, but there again, we do not have all the high-powered lawyers they have. Starbucks admitted they had not paid any Corporation Tax on sales worth £400 million in the years between 2009 and 2012, which should have netted the Treasury £92 million at 23%. That amount of money would have bought a lot of apples!

Whichever way you look at it, these companies hire the best lawyers and economists with one thought in mind: How can we get around the tax laws? Mind you the filthy rich are at it too, and if just 50% of these people paid what they owe, we, the rest, would be paying much less and the financial crisis would be over. It was interesting to read that Starbucks said they ‘made a loss last year’, why, because they were siphoning off the profits by “paying fees to other areas of its business — such as ‘royalty payments’ for the use of the brand”. How convenient!

Demonstration

Demonstration

Now they have suddenly decided to cough up what they owe for the tax year 2012, and in a statement they said: “We listened to our customers in December and so decided to forgo certain deductions which would make us liable to pay £10 million in corporation tax this year and a further £10 million in 2014”.  Yea, Right! I suppose the fall-off in custom and the demonstrations outside various branches had nothing to do with that decision. Face it Starbucks, you finally got found out!

My only remaining question is, when are they going to cough up the back taxes of £92 million?

‘Pay by Results’ Will Cut Re-offending? Don’t Make Me Laugh!

Posted in Britain, England, Government, Justice, Police, Prison, Teen Violence, Theft, UK with tags , , on 16/06/2013 by floroy1942

I swear, sometimes I hang my head in shame at some of the stupid ideas politicians come up with. According to a report out last week, they want to release prisoners early and support them by giving them housing, employment and financial assistance in a scheme called ‘Pay by Results’. According to the ‘experts’ this would decrease re-offending by a ‘massive’ (their words) 2.6%.

Chris Grayling

Chris Grayling

Wow! 2.6%, now that is a real eye opener! So what they are telling us is that for every 100 prisoners released from jail early, two would not re-offend because they have been given somewhere to live, a job, and cash. I am sure there will be a friendly social worker there to tuck them up in bed too!

The news was given out at a lecture by the ‘think-tank’ Civitas, and at the meeting Justice Secretary Chris Grayling is quoted as saying, “Britain’s problem is less about offending and more about re-offending”. Well that is one thing he got right. A pity he does not realize why criminals re-offend so easily.  The statistics for the past thirty years clearly show that  most short prison term criminals re-offend, sometimes within days of release. The following graphic shows the figures for Scotland which are also representative of the whole UK.

3% Re-Offending Rate For 2 To 4 Years Or More – 11% For Those Serving Between 6 To 24 Months – 50% Rate For Those Serving Less Than 3 Months. There Has To Be A Lesson Here!

Because our prisons are at capacity, according to the do-gooders, the justice system has for many years been loath to add to the prison population, and more often than not law breakers get either a ‘slap on the wrist’ or lily-livered community service, which all criminals consider a joke. Mr. Grayling said at the lecture: “If you are serving time in prison, on average you will have committed an astonishing 41 previous offences.” The mind boggles! 41 prior offences before they are locked up – it’s ridiculous! And that is only the offences they are actually arrested for.

The oft quoted argument that Britain’s prisons are overcrowded makes me wonder why the Justice Ministry announced last January that they are to close seven prisons (within months) and reduce capacity at two more with a loss of 2,600 places! There are plans to build new ones and add to existing prisons but surely it would be better to have the new places ready first rather than the other way around. I can understand the necessity of such a move as our old Victorian prisons cost a fortune in upkeep, but it is wise to remember that with current trends the prison population is set to continue growing.

Re-Offending Rates Versus Sentence

Re-Offending Rates Versus Sentence

The statistics have long proven that the only way to stop prisoners from re-offending is a hefty prison sentence. Very few prisoners who have been locked up for more than two years actually re-offend, but the number who do after only a few weeks or months in prison is staggering. Now they think that ‘nanny’ tactics will sort out the vicious Neanderthal youth we have on the streets today. Think again Mr. Grayling! build more prisons, get rid of the TV’s and games, let them do hard labour, and make a prison sentence something to be feared once again. Then you will see a drop in re-offending!

The Callousness of Modern People!

Posted in America, Britain, England, Insanity, Modern World, Senior Citizen, Teen Violence, Theft, UK, USA with tags , , on 09/10/2012 by floroy1942

I have just read a story in the news about an 83 year-old war hero who was mugged in broad daylight in a Tesco Supermarket car park, and even though he called for help, his pleas fell on the deaf ears of those walking past. Michael Saxby, who needs crutches to get around, was robbed of his bank card and then the thieves took £720 out of his account. He is fairly sure that a young woman filmed him putting in his code as he took money from a cash machine before the robbery.

Michael Saxby

It happened in the middle of a busy car park but despite his cries of help to passers-by, not one came to his aid. To me this is intolerable! Are modern people gutless, or is it the ‘it’s not my problem’ attitude, I can’t quite make up my mind. I know for a fact that even though I am 69 coming on 70 I would have done what I could to help the poor man!!!!

Mr. Saxby said afterwards that when he was younger he would not have hesitated to help someone in that situation and I know how he feels. Back then when men were men, practically anyone would have stepped forward to help, but now no-one wants to get involved, and in my view people today should feel utterly ashamed of themselves. Having spent a good deal of his own life helping others its downright disgusting that no-one came to help him.

In 1942 he received an award from the Royal Humane Society for saving a young boy from drowning in a Cambridgeshire river, and after leaving the RAF where he served as a medic, he worked at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for more than 40 years.

Tesco Cambridge UK

Mr Saxby told reporters that he called for help but people in the car park just “walked on”. Later he said, “I’ve helped people all my life, but no-one came to my aid. One woman did walk over but she was sort of brushed away…….I’ve always been very conscientious, especially as a younger man, even if it meant putting my own life in danger. I always helped people.” Well thanks Michael, some of us do appreciate it!

It brings to mind a piece I wrote some time ago about people walking past a mugging victim who was dying on the streets of New York one night. He had gone to help a girl being mugged and got stabbed. The thing is, if he had received help he would have lived, but the people just walked on by. I can hear some say already, ‘see what happens when you go to help someone, you get stabbed’! Well to them I say, there is a big difference between a dark street in New York and daylight in the middle of a car park, and I am sure that if just two people would have approached the muggers they would have run off.

Morbid Interest At An Accident Scene

Believe me when I say I am very glad that I am old, for to live in today’s society you have to be so self-centred, and that for me is impossible. Like many of my age, I just don’t fit in any more. I could no more watch a mugging, or stand around at an accident or murder scene waiting for the bodies to be carried off than I could climb Everest, well not at my age anyway.

We live in a sick society today where the over-riding factors are greed and a callous disregard for anything that does not affect ‘self’. Its time everyone woke up to the fact that as a person, we are not alone on this planet, and as a species we need to help each other as much as possible, for there are very hard times ahead for humanity.

End of rant!

Roy.
