Young People Today Unemployable?

It will come as a surprise to many that UK business people consider most of our youth unemployable.

According to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), 76% of executives agreed that young people lack the skills necessary for today’s business world, and not surprisingly, they blame the education system in the UK. They claim the country is heading for a significant skills crisis that will eventually damage the economy.

Their main concerns are young people’s lack of discipline and poor timekeeping (61%), a shortage of workplace skills (63%), and a bad attitude coupled with lack of ambition (66%). Naturally, this does not apply to all young people.

Sign of the Times?

I for one do not subscribe to blaming only the education system for the current crisis, as I consider modern social attitudes a major contributor. We are deeply entrenched in a period in history when our youth often requires, and is given, everything handed to them on a plate, and more importantly, many consider it their right! Sad as it may be, that is the general consensus of opinion among much of our misbegotten youth of today. Ever heard the phrase “I want it, and I want it  now!!!”

Children today have become so privileged they don’t need to do a darned thing to earn the things they want: “I had to buy my son a computer because all his friends have one!!!” – Sound familiar? I heard this from a close friend.

Friends of ours have a three-year-old girl who has so many toys, their house looks like a toy store. When received she plays with them for a few minutes and then they lie untouched, and if this continues, and it probably will, how is the child ever to value anything in the future?

This sort of thing has led to the attitude we see in many today who believe life owes them a good living. This is the fault of the parents alone, who must bear responsibility for this current viewpoint among some of today’s young people.

Exam Time – But I Know I’ll Pass!

To be sure, the poor standards of education are just another nail in the coffin if you will, for there is little doubt that standards have dropped drastically over the past three decades. The previous Labour government was to blame by continually making exams easier in an effort to massage the pass rates for GCSE’s etc. If you want to look good in the eyes of the public and show how well the education system is doing,  just lower the pass rate until everybody passes!

This attitude may have made the government look good, but when I see the levels of English in many of today’s young people it makes me shudder. They have been let down badly by the education system, for by far the greater majority are now semi-literate by old standards. They can’t spell for toffee, and as for putting a dozen words together to make an intelligent sentence, forget it! Have you ever seen ‘Teen Speak’?

You may be interested in a blog I wrote some time ago on this subject:

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/its-not-mi-falt-i-carnt-spel/

As a further example, take a look at the comments some people post on web page news items and you will see what I mean! Sometimes even the news items themselves show disgraceful errors.

See What I Mean?

In my opinion, not all problems within the education system can be laid at the door of government, for another contributing factor is the extremely poor standard of teachers. Many are hired before they are even qualified.

In my day, a teacher knew his subject inside out and you could ask any question and get a proper answer, today however, it seems some teachers do nothing more than quote from the lesson material book with little understanding of the subject in depth. Should some enterprising student ask a question they have to “look it up”.

I apologize in advance to those dedicated individuals in the teaching profession who do not fall into this group, for I know full well there are good teachers out there.

Yet one more facet to this saga is the interference of the ‘Bleeding Hearts’ Brigade (Human Rights/Politically Correct idiots) in our education system. Along with the collusion of a weak government of the time, they successfully stamped out any form of discipline in our schools by having laws passed that forbid any form of punishment for not paying attention, disrupting classes or even refusing to learn.

Physical Attacks a Daily Occurrence

Over the past two decades, more than 50% of teachers have at some time or other been attacked in the classroom by unruly pupils, some even with a knife! This is an intolerable situation, even more so because the current laws forbid any form of punishment. These same laws have given us a legacy of undisciplined youth that knows it cannot be touched, and feeds the rate of illiteracy like nothing else for they cannot be bothered to learn in school.

The Future For Many

There is without doubt a huge shock awaiting many of the current generation when they finally leave school and try to get a job. You can be fairly certain that too many will swell the queues outside the local Dole Office for they will be unemployable in anything but menial tasks.

So, because of our lack of foresight in educating and disciplining our young, we are creating a huge future burden on the Welfare System that may well be unsustainable. Not only that, and far more dangerous, we will become dependent on importing those with the necessary skills to work in industry, while our own people do the menial jobs that require no qualifications or skills.

The big problem is, can we go back to how it should be? I think not for it is next to impossible to go back!

Any Excuse For Thuggery? – The Student Riots.

Posted in Britain, Demonstration, England, English Schools, Free Speech, Germany, Government, Insanity, Justice, Modern World, MP's, Parliament, Police, Police Complaints, Prison, Riot, Teen alcohol abuse, Teen Violence, Teens, UK with tags , , , on 12/12/2010 by floroy1942

Last week saw the centre of London turned into a battlefield once again as students rioted in protest over the increase in tuition fees. As usual it turned nasty, with major property damage and an attack on members of the Royal Household.

The Peaceful Part of the Student Demonstration

Any demonstration, organized for whatever purpose in the UK today, is hi-jacked by a criminal element intent on ‘having a go’ at the police, and causing as much damage and destruction as possible just to satisfy their own warped lust for violence.

That there were tens of thousands of peaceful demonstrators at this event is beyond question, but sadly, as usual, it was the criminal element that got into the news.

Among much of the youth in Britain today, there is an underlying current of violence seething just below the surface that finds an outlet when good people take to the streets to protest against something they perceive as wrong. The end result is always the same, a pitched battle with police that escalates into innocent people being caught up in it.

Is This What We Want on Our Streets – Anarchy?

Among a crowd of 100,000 peaceful demonstrators, less than 100 thugs can turn the event into something reminiscent of a war zone in a matter of minutes. It is true to say that many people, initially innocent, start getting aggressive trying to protect one or more of ‘their’ number being arrested by the police, and so it escalates.

What these ‘innocents’ do not seem to understand, is that the person or persons they are trying to defend from the police are there for the express purpose of causing violence, and turning the whole event into a riot.

I am convinced that those responsible for initiating the violence last week have never seen the inside of a university, and probably never even finished secondary school. These are the type of people responsible for much of the thuggery in our towns and cities, and who spend their time selling drugs, getting drunk, stealing cars and anything else that is not nailed down. Most will without doubt become inmates of HM prisons.

Students or Thugs? I Think the Latter!

The police have issued photo’s of those individuals they have been able to identify as troublemakers. If you wish to have no more repeats of last weeks violence and know them, you should turn them in.

It is worth noting one of the comments attached to the following Daily Telegraph video report which reads as follows:

hey kids, lets learn how to kick the shit out of riotpolice:

A) coppers hate it when u splinter, coz they cant manage every splinter group. splinter like fuck!

B) coppers can’t see through there visers and shields if you spray paint in there face!

C) potassium nitrate+suger+naga jolokia (chilli) is your home made C.S gas (strong enough to fend off elephants)

D) thermite (easy to make and not illegal!)

E) petrol bombs, ad oil or styrophome (makes it sticky)

F) wear black

any questions?

It should be obvious to even the most dull among us that considering the atrocious use of the English language the writer is not a student!!! This is a prime example of why you too should back our police force against this rabble instead of complaining when they do the job we, the general public, ask them to do.

YOU Will Have to Pay For the Replacements! – Happy?

Because no-one, least of all their parents, has seen fit to give these malcontents a sense of direction in life they turned to the easy way of making money i.e. crime and violence. I am sure they are hooked on the adrenaline rush they get from destroying things they see they can never have.

There is little doubt that, as in other demonstrations, the mayhem witnessed had nothing whatsoever to do with the increase in tuition fees at universities.

At each successive demonstration more and more violence is aimed at the police, but sad to say, the public in general always sees them as the culprits. After a pitched battle in the city centre, where tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage is done, with scores of policemen as well as demonstrators requiring hospital treatment, the following days headlines trumpet stories of police brutality and heavy-handed tactics. Sorry! But I for one don’t fall for that crop of bullshit!

Maybe This is Why Your Insurance is Sky-High

Throughout history we British have boasted about our ‘Thin Red Line’ holding back hoards attackers, well, now we have the thin blue line and as a nation we should get behind them. During this last demonstration the police tell us their helmet visors were deliberately splashed with paint(Ref. above comment), forcing them to lift them so they could see. As soon as the visor was lifted they were savagely pelted in the face with rocks or billiard balls. Many suffered serious injuries as a result.

But do we hear this action condemned? No of course not, instead everyone is complaining about police attempts to confine the violence and destruction to a small area with a tactic called ‘kettling’. This means the police work to confine the violent demonstrators to a small area and thereby stop them from running wild throughout the centre of London.

It is a very effective tactic for which many shop and business owners should be grateful, for was this not enforced the damage would have been very widespread indeed. Who can tell how many shop fronts and cars would have been destroyed if these people had been free to roam the streets at will.

The sad thing is, instead of praise for confining the acts of destruction, the police were heavily criticised!

For the Police A Hopeless Task

It must seem to many that whatever the police do in such circumstances they cannot win public confidence. I rather think that if I was Chief Constable of London I would keep all my officers off the streets during the next demonstration, and let people see what happens when the thugs are given free rein. Then you will hear the screams of condemnation across the entire country with cries of; why didn’t the police do their job? You can’t have it both ways folks! Either you fully back the police when they try to keep the peace, or you don’t. But if you don’t, then quit moaning when your car, shop or house is vandalised during demonstration violence.

When their hands are constantly tied, and their efforts to maintain order vilified, why should they risk serious injury on our behalf?

The instigators of the violence are well aware of the press reaction after they have had their fun, and know full well that the police will bear the brunt of the blame by supposedly ‘inciting violence’.

Alfie Meadows

This weekend a youth was hit with a police truncheon and later required brain surgery. Needless to say it was banner headlines in the gutter press with cries of police brutality. Yet, no-one, and I repeat no-one, has yet questioned what the situation was prior to the incident, and what caused the policeman to lash out. For all we know the young man may have been about to bash in some policeman’s head with a rock and it was a defensive action. But no! Without any of the facts being presented the police get the blame for brutality. Either way, the young man does have my best wishes for a good recovery, and should it be proven the blow was unjustified the one responsible should be dealt with.

Not a Thug? Then Why The Mask?

Over the last few years our law enforcement body has come under constant attack by demonstrators for their supposed heavy-handed tactics, but in my opinion, if you are bent on violence and destruction “You Reap What You Sow”.

I am sure the organizers planned a peaceful demonstration, but the problem is, it’s practically hopeless trying to prevent it being hi-jacked by the criminal element. It is becoming impossible to separate the thugs from the people who just wish to make their voices heard. Once news spreads of any planned demonstration, those who get their kicks from violence turn up from all over the country relishing the idea of causing mayhem once more.

German Police Water Cannon in Action

I am of the opinion that our police forces should be given the same powers as German police. Violent demonstrations in Germany are usually over quickly, because the police are allowed to use proper containment and crowd dispersal tactics that here would have everyone screaming police brutality.

It is time our police were also allowed  the use of water cannon on the streets of our towns and cities when demonstrations become ugly. The time for pussy-footing around with this bunch of trouble makers should be ended once and for all.

On the Receiving End of Demonstrators Wrath At the Government

The fact that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles got caught up in the violence will I am sure be thoroughly investigated. From the fierceness of the attack one would imagine that Prince Charles was solely responsible for the increase in tuition fees. It is shameful that such acts should be perpetrated against a future king on the streets of London.

It makes me think that Britain as a country has lost its soul and is descending into the dark pit from which it will never emerge. God help us all!

Age Challenged (politically correct) Exodus

Good-bye Britain

It would seem those with the most common sense, and can afford it, are leaving Britain in droves. And why not? Statistics published today by the Home Office reveal that people over the age of 55 are emigrating as fast as they can get their bags packed. The main reasons are, fear of crime (but Gordon said…….), the weather, and the ‘creaking economy’. The Home Office graph shows the sharp rise in emigration since Labour came to power. No surprises there!

Only this last week Gordon Brown was castigating the Conservative Party for stoking people’s fear of crime in an effort to win the election. According to our erstwhile ‘I’m in touch with the people’ Prime Minister, this was all a pack of lies! Could it be then that all the emigrants are Tory voters who were conned by David Cameron?

Drunken Violence

Take a walk through the centre of any town or city of a Saturday evening if you dare. The drunken teenager culture so prevalent in English life today means you will more likely end up in the casualty department of your local hospital rather than back at home. When you consider that you are not even safe in your own home there has to be a point when people say enough is enough! But not to worry folks, it’s all Tory propaganda!

English Winter

No-one can fault people for wanting to get away from today’s dull, grey and wet English weather and exchange it for a life in the sun, you would be mad if you loved English weather! Like me, most over 50’s will remember when summer’s were real. First the awakening of Mother Nature after her winter sleep with the woods (we had them then) carpeted with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells, followed by three months of balmy warm weather slowly moving into autumn and harvest time as the leaves turned all colours of brown. Not any more, climate change has taken care of that. Now the British people, and others, are faced with major storms, snow and ice, and not to forget the annual flooding that has become a main feature of English weather.

Spanish Winter

As far as the ‘creaking economy’ is concerned, life must surely be better somewhere else. Gordon Brown, along with the aid of the bankers, has driven the country into debt to the tune of billions of pounds, and its anybody’s guess as to when the economy will recover. But immigrants are still given thousands of pounds in handouts which they should not be entitled to (some to pay for the £2 million houses they are living in) just so Labour has their votes.

John Bull

Quite rightly, most people in this age group feel that Britain has lost its national identity and is unrecognisable from the country they grew up in. They have seen the gradual erosion of the British way of life, sucked out by the Labour Party since it came to power. In those far off days crime was so low that it wasn’t even necessary to lock your door when you went away on holiday. My grandparents never did, but try that today and you will find your house empty when you return.

The Home Office figures reveal that a staggering 42% of people over 55 wish to leave for sunnier climes, and 38% hope to do it in the next 5 years. The most favoured places for ex-pats are France, Spain and Cyprus, with many considering, or have moved to, Australia and New Zealand. It is certain that the unexpectedly high exodus of the moment is but a drop in the ocean compared to what it will be in five to ten years time. By then I fully expect the percentages to increase dramatically as people get so fed up with it all they do not even wait for retirement.

It all goes to prove that this once mighty and proud nation is finished. Ethnic Britons might just as well get out and leave the land to the immigrants and their ‘masters’, the Labour Party. History has shown that the glory of any nation is but transitory, and now it is the turn of Britain.

Last One? Turn Out the Lights!

I once joked, ‘Will the last Englishman to leave the country please turn out the lights’. Little did I realise the time for ‘lights out’ was so close. Sometime within the next twenty years the immigrant population in the UK will be high enough for them to take over completely and when that time comes I can see a mad scramble for the boats.

There will be many who think I am mad because of my views, but Hear Ye!, many people thought Enoch Powell was mad when he made his famous speech in the House of Commons, and he turned out to be right! History will prove one of us right!

I shouldn’t be so gloomy, after all at my age it hardly matters. Does it?

Roy.

Gordon, You’re So Out of Touch!

Praying for a Win?

Gordon Brown has once again proved how out of touch he is with the people of Britain. In a speech given to the Thames Valley Police last Monday he had the gall to suggest the ‘fear of crime’ by the population was nothing more than a political ploy by the Tories! What planet does this guy live on?

Fear of crime has been one of the main causes of concern for people in all walks of life for a decade! People no longer feel safe walking down the street of most towns and cities in the UK, and certainly not in their own home. Since the rise of the drunken yob culture in Britain it would be a brave man or woman who walks through the town centre on a Saturday evening. And yet, our esteemed Prime Minister thinks it’s a Tory ploy to get more votes.

Labour has been soft on crime ever since it came to power, in fact, it has exasperated the situation with its immigration policy because many of those responsible for the crime wave are immigrants. The Justice System is on the verge of total collapse due to his governments policy of releasing prisoners early and giving shorter sentences to ease the prison overcrowding instead of building more prisons.

Edlington Twins

Someone who commits cold-blooded murder gets less time in prison than a caring relative who assists a terminally ill patient in great pain to die. Career criminals are given community sentences which most of them ignore, and vicious torturers like the Edlington twins will be out in less than five years with a new identity.

He told the Thames Valley Police that in the last ten years prison sentences have ‘gone up’. What were they prior to that, zero? The number of repeat offenders who were released early has gone up dramatically since Labour swept to power in 1997, but nothing has been done to get these people off the streets.

Habitual Criminal Walid Salem

The case of Waled Salem the Egyptian career criminal who was caught by millionaire Munier Hussain and finally taught a lesson is a fine example, a lesson I might add that saw Hussain and his brother go to jail and Salem let off!

Prisoner Tag

Now Labour is apologising to jailbirds who will not be released early under the cancelled End of Custody Licence (ECL) Scheme and offering them early release with a tag. Under the ECL scheme, prisoners were released up to eighteen days before completion of their sentence, but under the new plan, they would be released up to four-and-a-half-months early! I can hear the cheers from the prisoners from here!

Another bone of contention brought to light yesterday by Lord Cary, a former Archbishop of Canterbury, accuses the government of ‘a strident and bullying campaign’ to marginalise Christianity in the name of political correctness. He said; “We have reached a point where politicians are mocked for merely expressing their faith….I cannot imagine any politician expressing concern that Britain should remain a Christian country. That reticence is a scandal and a disgrace to our history”.

Outspoken

Speaking before the Christian Broadcasting Council he highlighted two cases of people being victimised because of their faith. Olive Jones was sacked from her position as teacher for offering to pray for a cancer patient with whom she was working, and Caroline Petrie, a nurse in Somerset was suspended for offering to pray for a patient on her ward. She was later reinstated after a public outcry.

He is not the only one of our top clergy to express such a view. Last month Dr. John Sentamu the Bishop of York made his views known with the following; “Christianity is being pushed out of public life in a ‘ferocious and insidious manner'”.

Just how far down this ‘Politically Correct’ path are we expected to go. The government is without doubt backing this ridiculous practice, and so are the courts. Are we to remove all signs of religion in the country so we don’t upset the Muslims. Must they rule our country? Unless drastic steps are taken to reassert the rights of Britons in their own country, they will be within a few short years. They are already well on the way to achieving complete domination of local and national government.

Its the same old ‘elections are near’ bullshit from both the major political parties who are trying to dazzle, or more likely ‘con’ us into voting for them. As usual they pump out the same old rhetoric of how they alone are capable of ‘saving the nation’, but its all a smokescreen because once they are in power all the promises will be forgotten and it will be ‘business as usual’.

The Labour strategy of allowing in hundreds of thousands of labour supporting immigrants has kept them in power for far too long and now it is time they were put out to graze. They have done more than enough damage to our homeland, damage which I am sorry to say, may be irreversible.

David Cameron

No government in the history of our nation has done as much damage to our once proud nation, and so successfully sabotaged all the sacrifices made by previous generations to keep our country great. It is time for them to be consigned to history with the hope that the next government has the guts to salvage what is left of our land and our culture before it disappears into history. Whatever you do, don’t expect ‘Smoothie’ Cameron and his bunch to change anything if they win the election.

May God have mercy on us all!

Roy.

National Military Service – A Cure For What Ails Us?

Posted in Britain, Child Discipline, Children, England, Justice, Prison, Teen alcohol abuse, Teens, Theft, UK with tags , , , , , , on 18/01/2010 by floroy1942

Yahoo’s editor has posed the question in his column: Should the UK reintroduce national service in the Armed Forces? In the last decade Britain’s youth has become the most savage on the planet, and it is clear that neither government policies, nor the intervention of all the ‘limp wristed’ Goody Goodies have made an iota of difference. The British justice system is in tatters, with the courts incapable of handing out proper sentences for crimes committed by youths because the prisons are overcrowded or the Law considers them too young. The best the Government and Courts have been able to come up with is the infamous ASBO or Anti-Social Behaviour Order, which only places certain restrictions on them. These have become so ineffectual that they are viewed by most toe-rags as a badge of honour and are completely ignored anyway.

So what is the answer? Is the reintroduction of national service the solution to sorting out these malcontents once and for all? In short, I think the answer is yes, but not as we have known it in the past.

Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Greece have all reintroduced national service successfully to combat youth crime and the ‘yob’ culture. So why not Britain?

Comments on the news column show that many people are afraid their loved ones, once committed to national service, could end up in places like Iraq and Afghanistan and this fact is turning people away from the idea. To make this work a compromise is needed.

It has been suggested that young criminals be given the choice of jail time or serving in the army, with repeat offenders having the choice removed and being committed to serve a fixed term.  This could work in some cases but not all. The compromise suggested earlier would mean that young offenders be given the assurance they would not be sent to a war zone during their period of sentence. That takes care of parents concerns.

But what of the time spent in the Army? David Cameron of the Tory Party has suggested a non-obligatory period of six weeks for all 16 year olds, note the non-obligatory! Six weeks could never provide the necessary deterrent with violent youth because just as the malcontents got used to the idea they would be free with insufficient time to learn anything useful. Young criminals would need to spend a minimum of nine months in the loving bosom of the Army before any sort of character changes could manifest themselves. Within that time, it is fairly certain the constant application of strict discipline could begin to change the way these people think of themselves, and their place in society.

Each ‘soldier’ could in that time be fairly accurately judged by their instructors as to whether they are fit to re-enter society. If they are deemed not to have learnt anything they stay in until they have. Simple.

But what of the army? What could they do with all these nasty individuals? We are constantly hearing the army is under-manned and there is insufficient manpower to fight two wars, i.e. Iraq and Afghanistan. I am sure that handing over some of the UK Base tasks to the criminal element after sufficient training, would make more manpower available for the front from our volunteer army. But what jobs? Well, how about Transport, Administration, Security, Supply and Catering just to quote some examples. These are jobs that do not require intensive long drawn out training and could be done by many criminals. The added advantage is it would teach them a trade for use when they are released.

So how could you be sure those working in ‘Supply’ for example, (thinking they have been handed a golden opportunity to make some money on the sly) don’t start selling army property behind everyone’s back? Well, after finishing their ‘Basic Training’ and before any of them start becoming productive, they should be given a guided tour of the the National Military Detention Centre at Colchester. Just the sight of what goes on in that military prison will scare the pants off them. Normal prisons are holiday camps by comparison (well, come to think of it, they are anyway). After all, why should they not be subject to military justice while serving their sentence? If they do not break the rules they have nothing to fear.

There would of course need to be one major change to army thinking. The new ‘softly softly’ attitude to recruits would have to go out the window for the detainees. A soft hand with them would make the whole exercise a wasted effort. They need the iron fist to instil the normal  attitudes of decency, respect and responsibility that the rest of us take for granted. There are more than enough drill instructors who would love to put these misfits through the hoop.

The hard cases will only respond to men who are tougher and stronger than they are, and in any army drill instructor they will meet their match. It’s the story of the ages; power respects power! I am sure any low-life who thinks he is tough will soon wilt when he is doing a ten mile run through the Cairngorms in pouring rain with a 30lb pack and an Army instructor yelling at his heels.

I am no psychologist, but I am fairly sure that nine months of army training will make for a more mature and responsible citizen. Once these young people have finished their ‘sentence’ they could be given the choice of staying in.

Some readers may now be thinking they have found a flaw in my plan, because many of the youth criminals today are as young as 10 and 11 years old. Does that matter? Naturally, there are ways to downscale the action plan to cover these junior horrors. Many of them think they are tough anyway, and their age is no reason to go soft on them because they are only 10 years old. If they are old enough to commit murder, as many have, they are old enough for a taste of junior army life.

One concession to their age could be made by making them do only six months instead of nine months or a year. No! Young as they are, they can still turn out for inspection and parade at 06.00hrs every morning just like army recruits. If they spend the day learning to march, to keep themselves and their environment clean plus continuing their education under strict supervision they are sure to learn the error of their ways. Many of the normal infantry training tactics used in the army today such as physical education and assault courses, scaled to fit the trainees of course, would be a benefit in teaching them to work as a team, to help and respect each other. After all, if it can work in other countries, why not Britain?

There will always be the few hard cases who think they are tougher than the system, and some will run away because after all, an army camp is not a prison. But that’s OK, 48 hours in a real army prison will soon make them realise that co-operation is the best way out, and 48 hours is all it will take.

All this would place a burden on the army, and would be expensive to set up, but consider this! In the medium to long term, how much government money would be saved by getting these criminals off the streets, along with the eventual major reduction in the crime rates across the country? I am well aware that the Upper Brass of the Army has already said it is against the idea of the army being used as a sort of ‘prison service’, but what other effective solution is there. I am sure that with the proper organization this whole plan could be made to benefit the Army in many ways.

Life in  the army can be hard, and training would be structured such that we would eventually get back to the situation where criminals, once they have been through the mill, will not return to crime for fear of having to go through it all again. As in the old days, the only way to fight perpetual crime is to make the punishment such that criminals will not wish to subject themselves to it again.

Say what you will, but the best deterrent for crime is the fear of punishment.

The days when a youth can commit murder and get away with it because of his/her age has to end. Only then can we all live in peace and without fear of a group of youths hanging around on a street corner. It is time we stopped being soft on criminals or we will end up with total anarchy.

It’s time for positive action, but who will dare?

Contemplating One’s Navel.

Posted in Obesity, Overweight, Teen alcohol abuse with tags , , , , , on 16/06/2009 by floroy1942

When contemplating one’s navel, the big question today is whether those doing the contemplating can actually see their navel without looking in the mirror.

In order to get the necessary exercise, I often take a stroll along a beach close to where I live, and now the summer season has started they are beginning to fill up with sun worshippers from far and wide.

It really is an amazing sight to see so many bloated bodies turning bright red in the sun. It brought to mind the sight of elephant seals basking in the sun on some Antarctic shoreline, and made me wonder why people don’t look after their bodies the way they used to.

As a young man I delighted in seeing teenage girls with waspish waistlines and slim hips bouncing down the street. It was an everyday occurrence, and when the miniskirt came into fashion, WOW! What a sight that was for a young man’s eyes. In those days everyone talked about the ‘English Rose’. You may have seen jokes about someone walking into a lamp-post while distracted, well, back then the distraction was well worth the bump, and embarrassment.

I think it must have been around the late seventies, when a noticeable change started to come over young women. Maybe it was the introduction to Europe of that well known American Embassy MacDonald’s that started the rot. Either way fast food, and MacDonald’s, has a lot to answer for, and not only in Europe, but also the USA where the problem of overweight first became apparent.

For a few years I saw women slowly grow in size until we got to the late eighties/early nineties, when all of a sudden there were obese people everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Huge lumps of fat wobbling down the street left and right, and it was around this time the men started to get it too. But for them, in many cases it was a beer belly. The eighties and nineties were a time of plenty and good for everybody.

Fish and chips (french-fries for our North American readers) are, well used to be, the national dish of Britain. Now of course its more likely to be curry! I always enjoyed some fish and chips, especially in the old days when they were served in newspaper instead of these plasticy things they have now. Way back when, if the Chip Shop was a good one you always got plenty of chips for your money. Now the amount you get is determined by the silly little plastic tray they are served in, and you pay the earth for them.

Sadly, the fish and chip shops have now all been replaced by Indian and Chinese take-aways (so much for progress), but the zest for ‘chips’ has remained. Walking along the sea-front here watching the English eating during the day, you can see its ‘chips with everything’, one of the most fattening foods around when eaten regularly. A whole generation has been raised on chips and potato crisps, another fattening delicacy, and now we have long started on the next.

What saddens me the most is to see obese children. Its as if the parents just do not care what their offspring eat these days, just so long as they are quiet. I also have a few theories about this phenomenon but I doubt they would be popular.

Firstly, since the woman of the house now also goes to work, nobody gets to eat properly because she does not have the time, and besides, feeding the younger family members is often left up to the eldest. “Here you are love, here’s £5. Get some fish and chips for everyone. Mummy will be back at 6 o’clock.” Secondly, there is little time to prepare and cook fresh vegetables and meat, so once again its from the ‘Chippy’ or a pre-cooked meal from the supermarket.

For the last decade, since ‘hipsters’ became the fashion, everywhere you see females with their jeans, trousers or skirts just above their fanny with great rolls of fat hanging over the top, and ‘love handles’ the size of truck tyres. What an attractive picture to turn boy’s heads. Well, to be honest it doesn’t seem to matter these days because there is nothing else on the menu. I suppose the one good point about all this is, with so little to turn your head at least the lamp-posts are getting a rest.

I do not wish to be cruel, and I certainly do not wish to forget the young men, for in many cases they are just as bad. Look around you, and see how many times you see some young lad of twenty-something with a ‘beer belly’, and the same can said for most middle-aged.

In current times the English youth seem to be totally occupied with only one form of entertainment, getting drunk. Its like a badge of courage to be worn like a medal.” Cor, I had a skin-full last night!”, but the sad thing is, the girls are just as bad, and in some cases worse.

Unfortunately, today one sees their parents basking on a sun bed with their bellies sticking up like Everest oblivious to what they are doing to themselves and their children. I despair at many women, who still think they can cavort around in skimpy bikini’s with their layers of fat hanging all over the place. I cannot but wonder what they think of themselves when they look in a mirror. “Hmm! Not too bad, I am twenty-eight.”

It is difficult to decide where all this will end, but I am sure of one thing. The current higher than average death rate among smokers, quoted so glibly by physicians, will be but a puff of smoke compared to the death rate from heart attacks and the like in twenty to thirty years time.

One has to wonder at what stage the ‘wake-up’ call will come to the masses in Europe and North America. Personally, I think it will have to come through a new generation, and then by means of education. It is already starting in many schools in Britain, but if the lesson is not continued in the home the message will be lost.

In the meantime some of us have to look down at the sand when walking on the beach for fear of being given the ‘come-on’ by some huge beached whale who likes your slim tidy looks. Last week I saw a woman of middle-age come out of the water after a swim, and I swear the tide line retreated a whole metre! Honest! Sadly, they all seem to think it’s not their fault.

Thankfully there are still some slim people about, and not all are old or middle-aged. To the young girls, and boys, who have decided to look after themselves I say good luck to you, and don’t give in. Life will be more pleasant and you’ll live a lot longer.

Hopefully tomorrow’s growth industry will not be crane construction!

Roy.
