Why Is Everyone So Violent Today?

Apart from previous wars, the general public have never been as excessively violent as they are today. I wonder why? What is it that drives people at, for example, football matches to become so angry that we see running street battles and fans attacking each other or the police in the stadium? Something has changed in the psyche of many people today that I just fail to understand.

Fan Violence

Fan Violence

When I was young fans always respected each other, and just because their side lost didn’t mean that they would turn to violence against those who supported the winners. And yet today we hardly see a football match that doesn’t turn to fighting among fans, especially at international matches.

We have seen violent demonstrations in America where the blacks are having a go at the police because they feel that they are hard done by, and yes, I fully realize that there have been three killings of Black people in dubious circumstances in recent days. But instead of having a peaceful demonstration there is always someone who wants to turn it into a violent confrontation with the police.

We have seen the same thing in France, Germany and other European countries for a variety of reasons ranging from football to political differences. Today in Britain street violence, especially between teenagers particularly on a Friday and Saturday night in many towns and cities across the U.K., has risen out of all proportion, Why?

In my view it is because most parents do not have any control over their offspring anymore. When I was growing up my mother was always at home and always there when I needed her, but that is not true today. Most parents see their children for maybe two or three hours a day because they are both working. As a consequence, there is nobody at home to make sure the children are brought up properly, and by that I mean, being respectful of others and being honest. This makes them ‘loose cannons’ whenever they have to interact with others.

In Britain in particular we have children and teenagers who will murder an old person for the few pounds they have in their pocket, and you can’t deny this for it has happened time and again. In a previous post I relayed the news item that a young man had stolen the wallet from an accident victim who lay badly injured and then walked away and left him on the street. In my youth that would never have happened, for the person concerned would have done everything to help and not just stolen the money and walked away. Oh how times have changed!

To me it seems that we have entered an age where many people put themselves first and to hell with everyone else. Of course I do not mean those of us who still care and behave properly. Naturally I am not saying that everyone is like this, and not everyone would get into a fight because their team lost, but the numbers are growing with our youth and young people. In maybe ten years time I can see a period where complete anarchy reigns across many countries in the world, for it takes very little to get some people’s blood boiling and they take to violence.

Riots In Venezuela 2014

The history of riots tells us that things have got much worse in the twentieth Century than they ever were before. For example, from 1900 until 1920 there were thirty riots across the entire world. From 2001 to 2010 there were 113 riots across the world, and from 2011 until now we have seen 288. It is good to remember that these are riots by the people and not just incidents at football stadiums, for many got killed during these confrontations.

Part of the problem is that the legal system in many countries is failing. I can only talk about Britain for that is my country, but the justice system is very weak in Britain because of the continued interference of the European Human Rights Council. It has weakened our laws to the extent that a stay in jail for a couple of years for murder is like staying at a holiday camp.

This is partly the reason why many do not fear going to jail for acts of murder, rape or just sheer brutality. In most cases those involved in street fights or at football matches couldn’t give a damn, for they know they will most likely be told in court not to misbehave anymore and are let off with a warning.

Whichever way you look at it, and whatever country you reside in, general violence is becoming more of a daily thing and it makes me wonder where it will all end.
