Should The USA/UK Interfere In Syria?

Posted in Al Quada, America, Arab, Britain, Iran, Obama, Politics, UK, United Nations, USA with tags , , , , on 25/08/2013 by floroy1942

Many of the current headlines indicate that both the American President and our Prime Minister are building up to military intervention in Syria in an attempt to stop the use of chemical weapons. An extremely laudable idea, but is it wise? The Syrian crisis has caused the death of thousands of Syrian people since it began, and there have been suspicions that chemical weapons have been used on several occasions and each side is blaming the other. It is without doubt a serious situation and the end of the conflict is nowhere in sight.

Syria Gas Attacks

Syria Gas Attacks

It is perhaps time that an outside force moved in to stop the violence, but the USA and the UK again? I am sure that would not go down well with other Arab countries especially after the intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan. These two invasions caused much hatred of the USA and the UK in the Arab world, which resulted in bomb attacks in New York, London and Madrid. Admittedly the intervention in Afghanistan was UN sponsored, but still caused resentment from the people because the bulk of the forces were either American or British.

It Is The Rebels Who Are Using Chemical Weapons.

It Is The Rebels Who Are Using Chemical Weapons.

Syria is most assuredly a difficult problem, for American and British intervention would be significant in stopping the needless bloodshed of the Syrian people and save thousands of lives, but must be weighed against the resentment created from other nations.  Iran in particular has warned against such action by saying publicly that ‘the US should not to cross the “red line” on Syria’, adding that such an action, ‘would have “severe consequences”, What those consequences are is anyone’s guess, for unless it resorts to terrorist practices it cannot really strike at the USA.

The Silent Arab Union States

The Silent Arab Union States

What I do find rather mystifying is the silence of the Arab Union states on the question of Syria. Occasionally one or other politician comes out with a half-hearted request for Assad to stop fighting and negotiate a peace deal, but other than that they have remained relatively silent. I would have expected more concrete action from this Arab version of the UN, like embargo’s and real pressure on both sides in Syria to stop fighting, and more importantly, killing innocent civilians. Sadly, they seem a pale reminder of the real UN which has become nothing more than a talking shop these days.

It remains to be seen if the UN will finally take positive action to stop the slaughter in Syria, but after two years, I for one am not hopeful. In political language, the strongest condemnation of the Assad regime has come from President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron this last week, who were quoted as saying, “they were “gravely concerned” about the situation. This is two steps up from ‘concerned’, which is followed by ‘seriously concerned’ in political speak and which indicates they are very unhappy.

Ayman al-Zawahri - Current al Quada Leader

Ayman al-Zawahri – Current al Quada Leader

We can be fairly certain that if an American/British force take any part in the Syria conflict it will not go down well with the terrorist groups who are looking for any excuse to have another go at us. The al Quada leaders, and every radical Muslim cleric will use it as an excuse to whip up more hatred of the West, and is sure to encourage more young Muslims to enlist as suicide bombers or become fighters. We could see a new wave of bombing attacks, much like London, Madrid and Boston on the cards, and for what, perhaps solving a problem that should be sorted out by the other Arab nations.

Syrian Rebels

Syrian Rebels

Apart from the occasional mild verbal exchange, countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain etc. have done nothing, even though this conflict is happening on their doorstep so to speak, and is a fellow Arab country. They have all steadfastly distance themselves from the entire scenario. Other Arab countries like Iraq and Egypt are not in a position to give an opinion on the Syria conflict for they have internal problems of their own, and interesting to note that other Arab countries are staying out of those problems too. Its like they don’t want to take any responsibility for actions taken to stop these conflicts, but are happy to sit on the side-lines and let the West handle them, and I might add, get all the criticism.

Chemical Gas Attack Victims

Chemical Gas Attack Victims

The only Arab country to so far voice any strong opinions is Iran. This should come as no surprise to anyone for they will use any excuse to have a go at the West, especially America. Another factor is that they are most certainly supplying arms to Syria so do not want to ‘upset the apple cart’ and hit their profits. Another advantage for them is that it is successfully diverting world attention away from their own nuclear ambitions. Notice that there has been practically no mention of Iran’s nuclear ambitions in the world press for months now as everyone concentrates on getting the most they can out of the Syria story!

The UN - All Teeth But No Bite!

The UN – All Teeth But No Bite!

It would seem to me that the only way the world can put a stop to this situation is for the Untied Nations to start acting in the way first intended by its founder, Winston Churchill. At least half the world’s nations should contribute to a UN Force that will go in and separate the two sides and negotiate a peace deal. It should not be left up to America and Britain to supply the greatest bulk of the forces as happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nations should be strongly represented by at least a thousand men and associated equipment, although smaller countries would provide something proportionate to their size and available military forces. There are at least 189 independent countries in the world (estimates vary) which means, discounting the very small ones, something in the region of perhaps 150,000 man UN Force could be assembled, which would be more than enough to control Syria. It is quite possible that even the threat of such a move would be sufficient to stop the fighting. Strong UN intervention would not only stop the civil war, but also, if it is proven that Assad actually used chemical weapons then he and his generals could be brought before a UN court to face justice. Naturally, if it was in fact the rebels then they would face justice.

The Russian Fleet Harbour In Syria

The Russian Fleet Harbour In Syria

Naturally, none of this will ever happen for several reasons. Instead of being a force for peace and justice in the world as was originally envisaged, The UN has become nothing more than a toothless tiger, a talking shop where politicians the world over can debate for endless hours without taking any decisions, and do not need to take action on anything. Another reason is the veto exercised by both Russia and China to protect their own investments and trade with the Assad regime. Russia fears it will lose not only billions of dollars worth of trade and arms sales to Syria, but also its only naval base outside the Black Sea. China on the other hand also has a multi-billion trade deal with the Assad regime.

Ethiopian Soldiers Fighting In Korea

Ethiopian Soldiers Fighting In Korea

I can already hear the comments of some bright person who will say that to assemble an international force on the scale laid out above will be nigh on impossible because of the logistics involved. So are we saying that our grandfathers were more capable than we are today, given what they had to work with at the time? The same thing happened with the Korean War in which 22 nations took part, even tiny Luxemburg. That was the only time when the UN acted as it is supposed to do and it stopped the whole of the Korean peninsular becoming like the North is today. Given our much increased logistic capabilities today why can we not make it happen? There are sufficient assembly areas in neighbouring countries like Jordan and Turkey and a two pronged attack is a good way to go if the two sides do not lay down their arms. The forces stay until peace has been established and an interim government is installed, and then leave.

It sounds simple and I know it is not, but this is the only way for the UN to resolve disputes when war breaks out and ensure that the nations on Earth can live in peace with each other.

There can be little doubt that if America and Britain, even with the help of the French, were to ‘invade’ Syria the repercussions could be significant, and drive yet another wedge between the Muslims and Western countries.

News Flash:-

Its amazing how just a few short hours can change things. Since I posted this article the US and Britain, along with France have stated that they are planning military action against the Assad regime within the next two weeks according to The Independent. The action will most likely be restricted to missile strikes from the US Carrier Force stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean on strategic government targets in Syria.

William Hague - Britain's Foreign Minister

William Hague – Britain’s Foreign Minister

The British Foreign Minister, William Hague, has said, “We cannot in the 21st century allow the idea that chemical weapons can be used with impunity and there are no consequences,” Another  Downing Street source said: “We intend to show that an attack of this nature will not pass without a serious response.”

American Carrier Fleet

American Carrier Fleet

At this time it is anticipated that all strikes will be with missiles and no ground troops or aircraft will be employed. Although the action will come from the American Naval Fleet, both Britain and France stand together with America politically in this action. Should the strike actually take place, we can all expect a reaction from Iran which can range from threats to subversive action, and there is a likely possibility of terrorist reprisal.

This step has been taken because of the four day delay by Syrian government forces in allowing the UN Inspection Team on the ground to visit and assess the area of the latest outrage. The three leaders are convinced this delay was to allow Assad forces time to remove incriminating evidence.

At Last, Labour Come Clean On Further Immigration!

Posted in Benefits, Britain, Conservative Party, Elections, England, Immigrants, News, Politics, UK with tags , , , on 24/08/2013 by floroy1942

It has at last become clear that Labour has no intention of restricting the massive influx of immigrants that began when Tony Blair came to power, and was perpetuated by Gordon Brown. In fact they wish to continue it!

The Sign Says: Labour - Britain's Progressive Future. Yea Right!

The Sign Says: Labour – Britain’s Progressive Future. Yea Right! Believe That And You’ll Believe Anything.

During an interview today on a Labour-supporting website, the Shadow Health Minister Diane Abbot said quite plainly that Britain needs more immigrants, strange as that may sound. Just about everyone in the country, except of course for the immigrants already here, are dead set against any more coming here for a free ride on the NHS, Housing and Benefits System, and so they should be. After all, it is tax payers money!

To me this woman is stark raving mad if she seriously thinks we need even more immigrants, we have far too many as it is. Really, what planet does she live on? Certainly not this one. So it goes without saying that anyone who votes for Labour at the next election must be a raving nutter, or an immigrant.

Because of the huge influx of hundreds of thousands of them during the last Labour government the NHS is close to collapse, the Benefits System is haemorrhaging money it does not have, our schools are turning multi-national to the detriment of our children, and there is not enough housing to go around, so what is this crazy woman playing at?

Perhaps she wants to see all born and bred Brits emigrate to Australia or New Zealand or wherever so Labour can forever rule a country with only immigrants as its population. Believe it or not, but this crazy woman was once a contender for leadership of the Labour Party!

During the interview she said,  “I’ve spoken to Ed Miliband about this quite a bit. I know that, on this issue, Ed’s heart is in the right place and he’s trying hard to position us correctly. What weighs with him is the polling, which shows what the Tories are doing on immigration is popular. And it certainly weighs on other members of the shadow cabinet.”

To anyone but an idiot there is a very strong sign of public opinion, and what the people want from their government,  after all, they are supposed to be running the country in our name are they not? Most British born people are fed up with the mass influx of immigrants, but if you look at the opinions of senior Labour MP’s, they do not care what ‘the people’ think, and once they are elected will go their own way like they did last time. Then they brought the country to the brink of disaster, and I think if they get in again they will surely push us over the edge.

All I can say is thank God for the Conservatives, they are a long way from being perfect, but at least they are respecting the people’s wishes and doing something positive about the problem, and we should all be grateful for that. It will take time, because mass immigration is not something you can turn off like a tap, but I am sure they will come through in the end.

Nigel Farage. I Too Would Be Laughing If It Wasn't So Serious!

Nigel Farage. I Too Would Be Laughing If It Wasn’t So Serious!

The leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage said of the outburst, “Mr Miliband’s recent conversion to some form of immigration control is entirely a response to the opinion polls. It is transparent that neither his nor his party’s heart is in it.” Well said Mr Farage!

An anonymous senior Labour person said, “Ed understands the positive contribution immigration made to this country. He also recognises it can affect public services and employment. We have to address those concerns.” Positive contribution???? You must be joking pal, I doubt if your view is held by the million or so youth who cannot find a job because they have all been taken by immigrants who are willing to work for much less. I doubt if your view is held by all those on the waiting list for housing because the bloody immigrants jump the queue. I doubt if your view is held by the millions who must wait for hours in hospitals and doctor’s surgeries while he/she attends to the immigrants.

Why is it that some of our schools now have to invest in translation computer programmes so that immigrant children can translate their questions and the teachers answers because they don’t speak a word of English? Can you imagine being a British child waiting for five minutes every time an immigrant child wants to ask a question. What is this doing for our education standards? Immigrant children should not be allowed in our schools until they can pass an exam in spoken and written English and only then will they not disrupt and sabotage the education of British kids. Its all part of immigrations positive contribution, right?

I cannot believe that any political party that can, and does, form the government of a country can be so irresponsible, but there again, we know Labour can, they proved that the last time they were in power. All I can say is God help us all if they ever get back in!

Hastening The Death Of Our Planet

Posted in America, Britain, Children, England, Environment, Europe, Health, Modern World, UK, USA with tags , , , , on 22/08/2013 by floroy1942

Global Footprint NetworkI doubt if many people will have taken much notice of a warning issued this week by the Global Footprint Network when it hit the news. Most will consider it doesn’t concern them, or has nothing to do with the way they live their lives, but in truth it affects everyone of us and in particular future generations, i.e. our children and their children. When viewed with a critical eye it is of the utmost importance and is symptomatic of the devil-may-care attitude of folks today. So what you may be wondering am I going on about.

The Global Footprint Network reported this week that mankind has once again used more of the world’s natural resources than the planet itself can replenish in a year, and its still only August. Now, this sounds quite far-fetched and may be hard to understand for some, so bear with me while I give you a simple explanation.

Humanities Footprint

Humanities Footprint

If you have ten female fish in a tank and one male, disregarding the male, you eat five of them that leaves five. These five will have one young one apiece which means at the end of the test period there will once again be ten fish plus the male. The consumption is therefore finely balanced with the ability of the fish to maintain their numbers. However, If we eat seven fish that will leave three and will result in only three new fish being born, so now we are down to six fish. What this means in global terms is that we are consuming more of the world’s resources than it can replace.

Under this general umbrella are of course natural resources such as minerals, coal, oil and gas, trees and forests that are being decimated, and the steady erosion of the soil used to grow crops because we need more and more food. Coupled with this is our ‘rape of the seas’ causing devastation to fish stocks.

The Amazon - The Lungs Of The Planet

The Amazon – The Lungs Of The Planet

On the other hand it also means we are pumping more gases like CO2 into the atmosphere and have reached beyond the limit where the world’s vegetation can absorb it and turn it back into oxygen. What exacerbates the CO2 problem is our destruction of the rain forests, which many people think of as only wood to burn or to make furniture etc. What is sad is that most people do not think of the fact that trees across the world are literally the ‘lungs’ of the world. They consume all the CO2 we put into the atmosphere and replace it with oxygen that we need to survive. Tests on trees in many areas have shown that most are now saturated with CO2 which means they have become less efficient in their function of producing oxygen. Bad news for us oxygen breathing folks.

So far as the other resources like coal, oil and gas are concerned many people seem to forget the fact that they are ‘finite’ i.e. they will not last forever and will eventually run out. We have already begun to drill for oil and gas in the oceans of the world because the land resources are steadily running dry, so what happens when they too run dry? Every year we see more and more cars and trucks on the roads world-wide as countries like China and India catch up with the more developed nations.

In 1960 there were an estimated 126,888 vehicles on the world’s roads, but in 2012 this has risen to over 1 billion.  What is also interesting is that the number of people per car has drastically fallen over the past forty years. Instead of three and four people per car we now have most vehicles with only the driver. From this you can imagine that oil production over the past few years has gone through the roof compared to 50 years ago. Naturally oil and gas are in huge demand by the ever-growing industrial sector so our annual consumption is huge. The sad fact is, it won’t last forever, and the more we consume now the more we accelerate the time to when there is nothing left.

So what do we do when that time comes? A sticky question, because most people are of the opinion that ‘something else’ will come along to power our world, and maybe they are right for science is making huge strides in development, but what if they are wrong? Will we end up going back to the horse and cart to get around? Many aficionados today think that wind power for example will replace all our nuclear powered facilities, but if we covered the entire landmass of the globe in wind farms it would not be enough at todays rate of consumption, which I might add is still climbing at an alarming rate.

Home Appliances

Home Appliances

We love our electrical gadgets in the home like iPads/fones, juicer, toaster, microwave, fridge, washing machine, TV, music centre and even an electric toothbrush, all of which consume lots of power. There are the advertising signs in cities, the office blocks etc that add tremendously to the overall consumption per day. Naturally the consumption per home is minute compared to the wasted energy in cities, but it all adds up. The energy consumption of many Far Eastern cities, like Shanghai for example, has gone up perhaps 1,000 times in the last fifty years as China has developed, and this is being reflected all across the world as more and more countries catch up with the West.

The Statistics Don't Lie

The Statistics Don’t Lie

China itself is the largest energy user on the planet but this is due to the size of its population, but Qatar, one of the smallest nations has the largest consumption of anyone per person. America is the largest consumer of power after China. It is interesting to note that scientists estimate that the USA alone would need four planet earth’s to successfully replenish all that the country uses in a year. At our present rate of consumption of the world’s resources mankind would need one-and-a-half planets to replenish what we currently use.  Food for thought!

Barren Farmland Worked To Death

Barren Farmland Worked To Death

However, we have not covered all the danger areas as yet, for apart from the world’s forests and the oil and gas reserves there is also the problem related to the growing of food. Up to the 1960’s farmers had lets say six fields in which to grow crops. Each year they would rotate the crops per field but always leave one fallow i.e. without crops. This gave the soil the chance to renew its nutrients over the year it was fallow and would be highly productive the next year. Over the last forty years that system has died a tragic death as farmers must grow more crops to feed the people, and to make more profit. In effect it means that the soil has never had the chance to regenerate itself ready for the next crop, and on many farms some crops are being grown twice a year instead of the standard once.

Spreading Chemical Fertilizer

Spreading Chemical Fertilizer

As you would expect, we have used up all the natural elements in the soil that give us a healthy harvest and for this reason we have been forced to supplement them with chemical fertilizers by the ton per acre. Chemicals in the ground essential for growing are ending up in the water supply through the streams and rivers on agricultural ground, and so this practice is poisoning our water also. It is all a vicious circle from which there seems no escape as the world population continues to expand and we need more and more food.

Just Remember, Superman Is A story And He Will Not Turn Up To Save Us From Ourselves

Just Remember, Superman Is A Story And He Will Not Turn Up To Save Us From Ourselves

There are many individuals who think all this is utter bull, and it probably won’t affect their lives one iota, but what they fail to recognise is that the burden of our selfish extravagance, and there is no other word for it, will be felt by future generations, and when it comes it will be disastrous.  The world cannot possibly sustain the current population growth, oil and gas consumption, deforestation and farming techniques without eventually failing us completely. We cannot continue to rape our planets resources at the current rate and hope to survive as a race. It is only a matter of time before mankind disappears from our world, and for sure the Earth will recover from our extravagance in time and then perhaps the cycle of evolution can begin again.

‘Gays’ Now Dictate School Policy?

Posted in Britain, Child Abuse, Children, England, English Schools, Gays, Homosexuals, Parenting, Teens, UK with tags , , , , on 20/08/2013 by floroy1942

I see the homosexual fraternity have begun dictating what should be taught in our schools in yet another move to ‘popularize’ their deviance. In 1988 Margret Thatcher tried to save the nation from the advancement of homosexuality by bringing out the famed Section 28 which stated: ……that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.” All I can say to that is ‘Bravo Maggie’.

This important piece of legislation was scrapped in 2003 by guess who? Tony Blair of course who not only opened the gates for mass immigration, but allowed these deviants to come out of the closet.

As A Parent Would You Want Your Child Subjected To 'Gay 'Propaganda

As A Parent Would You Want Your Child Subjected To ‘Gay ‘Propaganda

It would seem from press reports that many schools have clung to parts of the legislation when teaching about sex in schools. Among the schools criticised were the Crest Academy Group in north London who’s governing body had said: :”Academies and the Governing Body will not permit the promotion of homosexuality.” Another school in the firing line is Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol who’s Governing Body stated that it “will not permit the promotion of homosexuality”.

It’s happening in America but do we want it here?

There are some 40 schools on the ‘complaints list’ made up by the British Humanist Association, and the Welsh government in particular has promised it will investigate and change policy in these schools. The Department of Education said “schools should not promote any sexual orientation”. Bravo!

Do We Really Want To Promote This

Do We Really Want To Promote This

You may or may not have noticed that in the quotes outlined it said schools will not promote homosexuality. This in my view is correct. In the dictionary the word ‘promote’ means “to help or encourage to exist or flourish”.

You may inform children that such people exist, and that homosexuality is one of the many paths people follow within their sex lives, but now the ‘gay’ brigade want schools to go further and actively promote homosexuality!

This is both wrong and dangerous, for young children, or even teenagers should not be taught to prefer homosexuality by anyone! I do not think the interests of any child can be served by teaching them that to be a homosexual or a lesbian is preferable to a proper relationship. It can lead to major confusion in any child when they reach ‘that’ age.

That's About The Size Of It!

That’s About The Size Of It!

This whole saga is yet another effort by the homosexual community to further their cause in having their deviance accepted by all as normal behaviour. It is a further step in the escalating campaign which began with ‘gay’ parades, followed by ‘gay’ marriage and ‘gay’ adoption.

These people will not stop until they have convinced the whole world that their deviance is as normal as any heterosexual marriage. Sorry, I don’t see it that way and I never will. To me it is the beginning of disaster in which the whole of mankind will suffer eventually, well, except for the Muslims who still hang deviants, and probably Russia that has been in the news recently.

Muslim Answer

Muslim Answer

Now it seems the homosexuals have turned up the heat and want future generations to be like they are. What is sad is that people like governments and human rights groups are listening to their twaddle and accepting it without making a stand and saying children should be allowed to decide their own sexual preference without all the propaganda. In my view sex education has no place in school except for the biological process of having children, and it should certainly not be taught to children less than ten years old.

To all, parents I ask this simple question: Is this what you want for your child? ‘Nuff said!

The Disgrace Of Forced Marriages

Posted in Afghanistan, Britain, Child Abuse, Europe, Immigrants, Muslim, Religion, Teens, UK, USA with tags , , , on 15/08/2013 by floroy1942

Arranged and forced marriages have hit the headlines again due to the summer school break in which many Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi children are taken back to their homeland to be forced into marriage with a complete stranger. Records show children as young as two have been handed over for marriage, perhaps to settle a debt between families or within tribes. In some places newborns can be promised in marriage where two families wish to strengthen their ties, in others a child can be married off to settle disagreements with another family.

Forced Marriage

Forced Marriage

It is all so sordid and disgraceful that I am surprised in these ‘enlightened’ times this sort of practice is still tolerated. In many countries like Pakistan, such things are illegal but happen daily in the northern provinces and it is clear the government is not taking any action to stamp it out.

In the Muslim faith children, especially girls, are taught from birth that this practice is normal and they must accept it when the time comes. Under Islamic law the child/teenager must agree, but that does not reflect the reality, for in practice they have little right of protest and must obey their parents wishes. Arranged marriages are a common thing , where two young people are introduced and given time to get to know one another with the hope that love will blossom from the relationship. The marriage is arranged by the parents who look for a suitable candidate and discuss it with the other family. It is many times successful, but can still lead to coercion by the father or mother.

That is different from real forced marriages where one of the prospective partners is not consulted and dare not disagree with their parents choice. Many young girls are forced into such unions, often with men old enough to be their father, and if they rebel, they are coerced with severe beatings by their parents to submit, sometimes by being threatened with death if they continue to disagree, the so-called ‘honour killing’.

Killed For 'Staining The Family Honour'

Killed For ‘Staining The Family Honour’

This practice has led to many young girls taking their own lives or running away to live as outcasts, but when they are eventually found they are killed for the family ‘honour’, usually by a family member. Britain has seen many honour killings where children have been murdered because they in some way ‘stained’ the family honour. In some families this has happened because a young teenage girl of Pakistani birth has taken to wearing western style teen clothing. In one particular case a Pakistani man, with the help of his wife, killed his three daughters for supposedly bringing disgrace to the family honour. It is a sad and sordid business that happens across America, Europe and many other countries.

Typical Arranged Marriage - The 'Bride' Is A Child

Typical Arranged Marriage – The ‘Bride’ Is A Child

This time of year is particularly bad in the UK because many immigrant families living here go back to their own country on holiday. It is an ideal time for these people to finalize a forced marriage because their children are on holiday from school and will not be missed. Airport officials have been warned to look out for families travelling with a one-way ticket for young children, especially girls, and for children who look particularly nervous or unhappy when passing through the airport.

Part of the problem is that something like this is so ingrained in the culture, is very hard to stamp out among immigrant families. It is their way of life and they feel they have a right to practice it no matter where they live, even though it is against English law. If a young girl goes missing from school after the summer break it is normal for the authorities to ask the parents where the child is, but if they receive the reply that the child has gone back to Pakistan or wherever, what do you do?

Child Bride

Child Bride

The only course of action is to set up help organizations that can aid these children before it gets too far. They do exist of course, but it can be very difficult for a young girl or a teenager to defy their family and contact such an organization. The Foreign Office’s Forced Marriage Unit, set up to assist in such cases dealt with 15,000 cases last year and it is widely considered that this is the tip of the iceberg.

The cases related to 60 countries: almost half were linked to Pakistan, 11 percent to Bangladesh, eight percent to India, and two percent to Afghanistan. Other countries were Somalia, Turkey and Iraq. There are many organizations set up to help but unfortunately they have to rely on the victims coming forward before they can take action, and when they do the child is taken away from their parents and given help. It can be a traumatic experience for any teenager, and in particular a young child, which is why not many come forward.

Doomed To A Life Of Pain And Misery

Doomed To A Life Of Pain And Misery

In very many cases, young girls and teenagers can look forward to repeated rape by their new husbands starting on their marriage night. There is no question of consent, they are at the mercy of their new husbands. One woman who came forward to British police said she was married as a very young girl and repeatedly raped by her husband for eight-and-a-half years before she eventually ran away. These kind of stories are not uncommon.

It is sad that this disgrace is still practiced, but I cannot see it ending despite the tens of thousands of children per year who are condemned to a life of pain and horror, and from which there is little chance of escape.

Absurdity Of The Highest Degree

Posted in Britain, Conservative Party, England, Government, Human Rights, Justice, Politics, Prison, Theft, UK with tags , , on 14/08/2013 by floroy1942

I cannot believe that a so-called ‘educated’ man can tell the government that we should not send thieves and fraudsters to jail!  Prof Andrew Ashworth, a ‘legal expert’, and Vinerian Professor of English Law at Oxford University, has produced a pamphlet  to be distributed in which he says that jail time should be reserved for those “who commit crimes of a violent, sexual or threatening nature”.

Prof Andrew Ashworth

Prof Andrew Ashworth

He also argued against imprisoning repeat, non-violent offenders. He said, “for ‘pure property offences’, including theft, handling of stolen goods, criminal damage and fraud, imprisonment was disproportionate”. In his words, “Instead, the priority should be to deal with such offences in the community, giving precedence to compensation or reparation for the victim and, where the offence is sufficiently serious, imposing a community sentence.”

He claims that some 20,000 people go to prison each year for theft or handling stolen goods, 5,000 for fraud and 1,000 for criminal damage. The effect of his policy would reduce the number of men serving prison sentences by 8% (5,000 men) and women by 21% (700 women), saving around £230m each year.

Mugger In Action

Mugger In Action

O.K. clever dick, how you ‘compensate’ a couple who have been robbed of everything of value in their house? Pass the buck onto the insurance company who will pay a fraction of the value of the stolen articles, if they pay at all?  How do you ‘compensate’ old age pensioners who have been robbed of their most cherished possessions gathered over many years, and who may suffer serious illness as a result of the loss? What planet does this idiot live on, certainly not ours! It seems fairly certain that this pontificating fool has never been robbed or assaulted by a criminal. Perhaps he should go and talk to the many victims of crime before mouthing off!

This has raised a huge response from the public and many are saying that prison time does not stop re-offending, which is often true. So let us look at this argument and bisect the problems involved with keeping crime off our streets.

All The Comforts Of Home

All The Comforts Of Home

I agree with most of the comments that currently, prison does not stop the majority of criminals from re-offending, but that is for one simple reason, ever since the introduction of the Human Rights Laws we have been forced to turn our prisons into something resembling a holiday camp compared to the past.  We see often enough pictures of prisoners playing pool, lounging around, and of course every one has a TV, music and /or games centre in their cell. They have curtains on the windows so the sight of the bars will not traumatized them (oh my goodness, heaven forbid that they should be traumatized!), and the days of them doing hard labour are long behind us. Many of the custodial sentences handed out by the court, IF they get one, are so lenient as to mean nothing for the average criminal. For all the good prison does these days in getting criminals back ‘on the right path’ we might as well sentence them to a year in Butlin’s. Statistics have consistently shown that most of those sentenced to less than eighteen months automatically return to crime, sometimes within days of release.

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

Another Poor Victim In For A Surprise

On the other hand, those who get Community Service have no incentive to ‘go straight’. It is a fact that most times they do not turn up for work, and when they do they skive off somewhere. There is almost no supervision, and those sentenced to it find it a joke. There is absolutely no incentive whatsoever for an habitual thief or thug to turn away from crime, mainly because it pays well, and even if caught there is practically no comeback. Judges are consistently giving lighter and lighter sentences to hardened criminals to relieve the ‘over-crowding’ in our prisons and keep the Human Right’s Nutters happy.  Their argument is that even a serial child molester/rapist or serial killer has the right to his own cell  along with all the comforts of home.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with there being two, three, or even four prisoners to a cell and if they don’t like it, don’t do the crime! All the comforts currently enjoyed by serious criminals should be removed until they are left with a bed, a wash basin, and a toilet. For most less serious crimes, even six months of living in those conditions would be enough to deter all but the hardened criminal away from crime. The sentence received would be dependent on the criminal record and the crime. Serious offenders would live in the same conditions, but for a much longer period. Another factor is that criminals should be made to do hard labour 12 hours a day. All this pussyfooting around with pool tables, TV’s etc should be banned.

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

Boy George Doing 5 days C.M. For Cannabis Possession

As for the joke known as Community Service, that should be banned entirely and replaced with prison time, for even three months in a prison with a harsh regime will be enough to persuade most, if not all petty criminals that crime does not pay. At the moment it does, and criminals are making large amounts of money at the expanse of the pain and misery of their victims. It has to stop, and to hell with their human rights until such time as they can prove themselves to be fit to re-join society. We can at least be happy that the Justice Minister Damian Green has rejected the proposals outright as he should.

In a speech to Magistrates in Canary Wharf London Mr. Green said “I think that would not just send the wrong signal to criminals and the public, it would send the wrong signal to victims. Repeat offending, even non-violent theft, can be a huge problem for an individual family, for an individual victim and can often blight a whole community. Habitual, prolific offenders should have the fear of prison hanging over them.” I agree with that except for one point, what is there to fear from a prison sentence these days except the loss of freedom of movement?

The Victim Support Group had this to say:  “Victims tell us they want more than anything else the punishment to fit the crime and for the criminal not to re-offend”.

Quite right I say, make criminals wish they had never crossed the line! There is too much emphasis on the criminals Human Rights and not enough on the victim! That has to change.

Examples Of Health And Safety Stupidity

The Caption Says It All

The Caption Says It All

Health and Safety, implemented to improve safety standards and working practices, has ended up a sordid mess. Rules were introduced arbitrarily by  over-zealous individuals, who thought they were doing the right thing, but were in reality making a mockery of the rules, and turning people’s lives into hell.

A power company, supplying large areas of Scotland, introduced a couple of years ago a new ‘H&S’ regulation for its staff. All car drivers must reverse into parking spaces, and all people using the stairs must use the handrail. Disciplinary action would be taken against violators! Typical of someone’s idea that they can implement regulations in the name of H&S for their idea of the ‘common good’.

Among the more ridiculous interpretations of the rules comes the case of an Old Age Pensioner George Pretty (72). He made a weekly run to the local fish and chip shop to get meals for the OAP’s in the home he was in. He had been doing it for years, until some erstwhile Housing Warden told him he must stop because he did not have an insulated box to carry the meals in, and this was against H&S rules.

You will love this!

The Midlothian Council, again in Scotland, left all the lights on at night in an abandoned high school. The reason, vandals entering the property might injure themselves. According to a spokesman at the time, they had a duty to do this because as owners of the property they could be sued if someone hurt themselves after entering the premises illegally.

Compensation Lawyers Just Love Guys Like These

Compensation Lawyers Just Love Guys Like These

Two regional BBC Show presenters wanted to do a trial on their programme to see who could change the wheel of a car the quickest. To satisfy H&S, a mechanic was called in to do a risk assessment, and eventually the producer decided the trial could not go ahead unless a paramedic was standing by. Does this mean that should you ever suffer a puncture at any time, you must call an ambulance before you can change the wheel?

It would seem that even bar staff are allowed to interpret the H&S laws as they see fit. In March 2009 a woman, 26 weeks pregnant, was having a rare pint of lager with friends in a pub when she was asked if she would like another half. Having already decided that would be her limit, she was shocked to hear the bar-woman refuse to give the friend her drink because she was pregnant. She let it go without a fuss, but a little later, took a sip from a friends glass at which point the assistant manageress marched over and told her and her friends to leave the premises immediately because as a pregnant woman she should not be drinking alcohol. A blatant display of her using her limited powers to force her opinion of pregnant women and alcohol onto the unfortunate woman. To their credit, the brewery did offer the woman and her friends a full apology. As to the ‘SS’ managerial assistant, who knows, but I hope she never gets to be a manager.

For 43 years, 63 year-old Graham Alexander has cut the grass of the large roadside verge outside his house, until recently that is. In 2010 he was told by Wiltshire Council that he must leave it for the contractors, because he is “endangering himself and others and could be hurt by the mower or flying debris.” Should he continue he would be prosecuted.

This sort of insanity is not solely restricted to private individuals, it can affect government institutions too. The British Coast-Guard Service have done valuable work around the shores of Britain for hundreds of years, rescuing sailors and civilians alike when they get into trouble. Ever since the First World War they have been using flares fired from a flare pistol to illuminate large areas during a search for people or ships. Now they are forbidden for H&S reasons. The official view is that infra-red cameras, night vision goggles and spotlights have made the flares redundant. The Coast-guard did not agree, and still use them when necessary.

Isn’t it amazing how people and times change, and how pathetic some people can be? To be fair, part of the reason for institutions taking the stance they do, is the rampant ‘compensation culture’ rife in Britain for the past twenty years. You can be sued by someone who breaks a nail while typing on your computer for example, or even by a burglar who gets hurt while breaking into your house. Crazy Huh!

As just about everyone knows, over the past couple of years people have died because, for example, the rescue services have not been able to do their job because of these stupid regulation, so it is really about time they were given a good going over and all the trash removed.

It makes me wonder who the insane ones really are, those in the rubber rooms looking out, or those on the outside looking in!

Keep smiling – it ain’t over yet!

The Treaty Of Utrecht And Gibraltar

Posted in Britain, England, Europe, Justice, News, Politics, Spain, UK with tags , , , , on 12/08/2013 by floroy1942

The news is full of the spat with Spain over ownership of Gibraltar, Well, here is the original text of the Treaty of Utrecht, concerning the agreements over Gibraltar signed in 1713 by Spain’s king, Phillip V. It clearly states that the territory known as Gibraltar is handed over ‘in Perpetuam’ to Britain.  The following is the text of the treaty relative to Gibraltar:

The Original Document I'm Sure The Spanish Government Can Read It If They Wish.

The Original Document
I’m Sure The Spanish Government Can Read It If They Wish.

ARTICLE X OF THE TREATY OF UTRECHT

13 JULY 1713

The Catholic King does hereby, for himself, his heirs and successors, yield to the Crown of Great Britain the full and entire propriety of the town and castle of Gibraltar, together with the port, fortifications, and forts thereunto belonging; and he gives up the said propriety to be held and enjoyed absolutely with all manner of right for ever, without any exception or impediment whatsoever.

But that abuses and frauds may be avoided by importing any kind of goods, the Catholic King wills, and takes it to be understood, that the above-named propriety be yielded to Great Britain without any territorial jurisdiction and without any open communication by land with the country round about.

Yet whereas the communication by sea with the coast of Spain may not at all times be safe or open, and thereby it may happen that the garrison and other inhabitants of Gibraltar may be brought to great straits; and as it is the intention of the Catholic King, only that fraudulent importations of goods should, as is above said, be hindered by an inland communications. it is therefore provided that in such cases it may be lawful to purchase, for ready money, in the neighbouring territories of Spain, provisions and other things necessary for the use of the garrison, the inhabitants, and the ships which lie in the harbour.

But if any goods be found imported by Gibraltar, either by way of barter for purchasing provisions, or under any other pretence, the same shall be confiscated, and complaint being made thereof, those persons who have acted contrary to the faith of this treaty, shall be severely punished.

And Her Britannic Majesty, at the request of the Catholic King, does consent and agree, that no leave shall be given under any pretence whatsoever, either to Jews or Moors, to reside or have their dwellings in the said town of Gibraltar; and that no refuge or shelter shall be allowed to any Moorish ships of war in the harbour of the said town, whereby the communication between Spain and Ceuta may be obstructed, or the coasts of Spain be infested by the excursions of the Moors.

But whereas treaties of friendship and a liberty and intercourse of commerce are between the British and certain territories situated on the coast of Africa, it is always to be understood, that the British subjects cannot refuse the Moors and their ships entry into the port of Gibraltar purely upon the account of merchandising. Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain does further promise, that the free exercise of their religion shall be indulged to the Roman Catholic inhabitants of the aforesaid town.

And in case it shall hereafter seem meet to the Crown of Great Britain to grant, sell or by any means to alienate therefrom the propriety of the said town of Gibraltar, it is hereby agreed and concluded that the preference of having the sale shall always be given to the Crown of Spain before any others.

Arch Duke Charles Of Austria

Arch Duke Charles Of Austria

As you can see, part of the text covers the importation of ‘fraudulent goods’ but allows trade with Spanish territory for normal goods (i.e. food, and everyday items), but also gives Spain preferential treatment should Britain wish to leave the peninsular at any time. Apart from that there are no restrictions on ownership and it is forever.

King Philip V of Spain - The Catholic King

King Philip V of Spain – The Catholic King

This treaty was signed willingly by the Spanish king as a final act to end the War of Succession that had raged from 1701 to 1714 which concerned who had the right to succeed  the last of the Habsburg kings of Spain, Charles II who had no legal heir. It must be remembered that the royal families of Europe intermarried like crazy to maintain the bloodline, which meant that both France and Austria had claim to Spain when Charles died.  It is all far too complicated to mention here, but suffice it to say, war became inevitable when the royal houses of both France and Austria laid claim to the territory of Spain, especially taking into account the many overseas countries it controlled.

Louis XIV Of France

Louis XIV Of France

In any event, this led to the Succession Wars and in a bid to end the conflict the Treaty of Utrecht was signed. It laid down the borders of modern Europe with concessions being made to the victors. Part of those concessions included Gibraltar.

Gibraltar - Constantly On Guard

Gibraltar – Constantly On Guard

The wording of the Treaty shown above is quite clear in that the Spanish gave up all right to ownership and influence in the territory forever. It is therefore unreasonable for the Spanish government to now claim this document never existed, or was signed under duress. The cold fact of the matter is that Spain has no rights to Gibraltar unless Britain no longer wants it, and the people of the peninsular will have a lot to say about that.

Nonsense Time – An Historic Tale Set In Modern Times.

Admiral Lord Nelson

Admiral Lord Nelson

A superbly accurate description of life in modern Europe, but placed in an historic setting. I received this in the e-mails today and just had to share. My sincere congratulations go out to the person who put this together.

Most Brits, at least the older ones who were taught history, will know about the Battle of Trafalgar in which Admiral Lord Nelson beat the combined French and Spanish fleets at Cape Trafalgar on the southern coast of Spain on October 21st in 1805. With only twenty-seven ships, Nelson sank twenty-two ships of the opposing fleet of thirty-three without a single loss.

Now imagine how things would have been if the battle had taken place today:

Nelson: “Order the signal, Hardy.”

Hardy: “Aye, aye sir.”

Nelson: “Hold on, that’s not what I dictated to Flags. What’s the meaning of this?”

Hardy: “Sorry sir?”

Nelson (reading aloud): “England expects every person to do his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability.’ – What gobbledegook is this?”

Hardy: “Admiralty policy, I’m afraid, sir. We’re an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil’s own job getting ‘England’ past the censors, lest it be considered racist.”

Nelson: “Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco.”

Hardy: “Sorry sir. All naval vessels have now been designated smoke-free working environments.”

Nelson: “In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main-brace to steel the men before battle.”

Hardy: “The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. Its part of the Government’s policy on binge drinking.”

Nelson: “Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we’d better get on with it ………. full speed ahead…”

Hardy: “I think you’ll find that there’s a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water.”

Nelson: “Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow’s nest please.”

Hardy: “That won’t be possible, sir.”

Nelson: “What?”

Hardy: “Health and Safety have closed the crow’s nest, sir. No harness; and they said that rope ladders don’t meet regulations. They won’t let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected.”

Nelson: “Then get me the ship’s carpenter without delay, Hardy.”

Hardy: “He’s busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the foredeck Admiral.”

Nelson: “Wheelchair access? I’ve never heard anything so absurd.”

Hardy: “Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled.”

Nelson: “Differently abled? I’ve only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn’t rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card.”

Hardy: “Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency.”

Nelson: “Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons.”

Hardy: “A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won’t let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don’t want anyone breathing in too much salt – haven’t you seen the adverts?”

Nelson: “I’ve never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy.”

Hardy: “The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral.”

Nelson: “What? This is mutiny!”

Hardy: “It’s not that, sir. It’s just that they’re afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There’s a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks.”

Nelson: “Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?”

Hardy: “Actually, sir, we’re not.”

Nelson: “We’re not?”

Hardy: “No, sir. The French and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn’t even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation.”

Nelson: “But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil.”

Hardy: “I wouldn’t let the ship’s diversity co-ordinator hear you saying that sir. You’ll be up on disciplinary report.”

Nelson: “You must consider every man an enemy, who speaks ill of your King.”

Hardy: “Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it’s the rules. It could save your life”

Nelson: “Don’t tell me – health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?”

Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And there’s a ban on corporal punishment.”

Nelson: “What about sodomy?”

Hardy: “I believe that is now legal, sir.”

Nelson: “In that case…………………………. kiss me, Hardy.”…!!!!!

I think we can thank our lucky stars that all the country’s major battles were fought way back in the past. Imagine trying to fight the Second World War today!!!!!

My sincere thanks to the mystery writer and the friend who sent it to me.

The Gibraltar Controversy

Posted in Britain, Conservative Party, David Cameron, England, Europe, Human Rights, Modern World, Spain, UK, World War 2 with tags , , , , on 10/08/2013 by floroy1942
Gibraltar At Night

Gibraltar At Night

I was happy to hear this last week that David Cameron has once again told the Spanish that Britain will not give up Gibraltar. I find it totally ridiculous that countries like Spain and Argentina consistently make ridiculous claims for ‘return’ of territory they have not had control of for many hundreds of years.

The peninsular first became part of Spain following the collapse of the Roman Empire but was overrun by the Muslim Moors in 700 A.D. It was annexed by the Christian Kingdom of Castile in 1309 but was once again lost to the Moors in 1333 who ruled until 1462 when it was again recaptured by the Spanish who remained in control until 1704 when it was captured during the War of Spanish Succession by an Anlgo-Dutch fleet in the name of  Charles VI of Austria who was  the Habsburg pretender to the Spanish throne. When the war ended the territory was ceded  “in perpetuity” to Britain under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. It has been a British possession ever since then.

Guarding the Rock - WW2

Guarding the Rock – WW2

Thereafter, Gibraltar was besieged and heavily bombarded during three attempts by the Spanish to regain it but all were repulsed effectively. In fact, Gibraltar has faced fourteen sieges within the last five hundred years. Although attacked by German, Italian and Vichy French forces during the Second World War all were withstood. The last major attempt at subduing the people of Gibraltar was during the Franco era when he cut off all communications and sealed the border between 1969 and 1985. This also failed.

Cueta and Melilla - Spanish Territory In Morocco

Ceuta and Melilla – Spanish Territory In Morocco

So you see, this tiny peninsular of land has had more than its fair share of problems, but despite them all the people have never been defeated. During the last war it became a major Navy base for British fleets operating in the Mediterranean Sea, but today it has little strategic importance. However, it is as British as the UK with its red double-decker buses, red phone boxes and British traditions. For this reason I applaud the stance of our Prime Minister in telling the Spanish that so long as the people of Gibraltar want to stay British they shall have that right. I think it also behoves him to remind Spain’s Prime Minister, Rajoy, that Spain also has two enclaves in Morocco called Ceuta and Melilla that belong to Spain which they steadfastly refuse to hand back. They too are similar to Gibraltar in that they are on the coast near the narrows.

Gibraltar

Gibraltar From The Air

The reason this whole saga has hit the headlines is because the government of Gibraltar placed large blocks of concrete in the bay in Gibraltar’s territorial waters to deter Spanish fishermen  who regularly fish in them. The methods they use are particularly bad for the ecosystem because they trawl the seabed with nets that destroy the habitat of many species of sea creatures. The Spanish have been known for years for their ‘rape of the sea’, they even fish in North Sea waters and don’t give a fig for legal boundaries. Quotas mean little to them and they have put the fishing fleets of many countries out of business. I remember when the port of Grimsby in the UK had one of the largest fleets in the country, but now there are but a few boats left.

Qeues Waiting To Leave Deliberately Caused By Spanish Customs

Queues Waiting To Leave Deliberately Caused By Spanish Customs

But apart from all that there is the question of the sovereignty of Gibraltar. It has been in British hands for more than three hundred years as a result of a treaty the Spanish signed themselves, so what gives them the right to demand it back. Just supposing they did get it back, what then? In my view it would deteriorate into a useless hunk of rock at the southern end of the country. Living in Spain for many years has given me an insight into the way these people think, and I can say with utmost certainty that if it became Spanish, the Gibraltar tourist trade would dry up within a couple of years and given a few more years would look just like the other side of the border.

Inside' The Rock' Caves

Inside’ The Rock’ Caves

My wife and I go to Gibraltar regularly from Marbella and pass through La Linia which is the Spanish town on the border with Gibraltar, and I have seldom seen a more run-down place in all my life. Just driving through it is depressing. Much of the population in this small town work in Gibraltar and if wasn’t for this they would all be in big trouble. Practically every shop you go to in Gibraltar has Spanish staff, and as you walk the streets you hear Spanish spoken ten times more than English.

The "Britishness" Of Gibraltar

The “Britishness” Of Gibraltar

Gibraltar does have a certain charm with its quaint single shopping street, where incidentally most of the businesses are run by Indians or Pakistani’s, but it’s also the very ‘Britishness’ of the place, in many ways its like the UK used to be. The peninsular has an area of just 6.5sq.kms with a population of slightly under 30,000, and much of the land on the western side was reclaimed from the sea where now stand large blocks of apartments.

What visitors to Gibraltar have to endure:

The Apes Of Gibraltar - The Best Thieves On The Peninsular

The Apes Of Gibraltar – The Best Thieves On The Peninsular

It is a bustling place with many attractive tourist sites like the limestone caves and the Barbary apes that inhabit the summit. It has very nice beaches and is in many ways a nice place to visit. On top of all that it is a tax-free haven which the tourists, and I might add most of the Spanish locals, like very much. Everything considered, I am glad that successive UK governments have steadfastly refused to accede to Spanish demands that it be handed back, for it is as British as fish and chips and must remain so.

Website Causes Another Tragic Teen Death

Bullied To Death At 14

Bullied To Death At 14

I was appalled today to read of yet another teenager who committed suicide because of abusive messages received over a teen chat website. What is it about today’s teenagers that makes them send cruel, heartless hate messages to others over the internet? It seems that bullying has reached new depths of depravity and hate that it is now driving young people to such depths of despair that it forces them to  take their own lives.

I refer to the case of 14 year-old Hannah Smith who was hounded to death through the website Ask.fm until in sheer desperation she hung herself in her parents home. According to reports, she was hounded for weeks prior to her death with messages urging her to kill herself. As you would expect, all the messages were anonymous and consisted of things like:  “u ugly **** go die evry1 wuld (sic) be happy.” –  “do us all a favour n kill ur self”. – “drink bleach” – “go get cancer” and “go die”.

Bullied To Death

Bullied To Death

There is no doubt that the internet can be a minefield for young children and teenagers who have not been properly schooled in  its use, and that goes for mobile phones too. Hannah is not the only one to have taken such drastic action to escape the anonymous hate of others on this particular website. A year ago  Irish teenagers Ciara Pugsley, 15, from Leitrim and Erin Gallagher, 13, from Donegal both took their own lives after being subjected to on-line bullying, and in April this year 15-year-old Josh Unsworth from Lancashire was found hanged in his parents’ garden. He had endured months of cyber-bullying on the website.

The website carrying these messages, Ask.fm which is Latvian-based, said in their Press release, “We are committed to ensuring that Ask.fm remains a safe, fun environment, and we have policies in place that empower our users to protect themselves and to invite our intervention when required. For example, all users can switch off anonymous questions in their privacy settings; and if they do receive a question that they don’t like or find offensive, they can block the user and decide to report the incident. All reports are read by our team of moderators to ensure that genuine concerns are heard and acted upon immediately. Ask.fm is fully compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.” I must admit that if I were running the company, I would make it impossible to send anonymous messages.

Cyber-Bullying Statistics

Cyber-Bullying Statistics

It does seem that the website has the standard safeguards in place but it is clearly not enough, for the question remains, why didn’t Hannah turn off anonymous comments or block offensive users? I guess it could  be morbid curiosity as to what the writer would say next, but it is more likely to be that teenagers today are just not mentally equipped to handle situations like this. In this I feel that parents bear a lot of responsibility for not preparing their child on how to handle such things. Mind you, to be fair, in many cases the children do not tell their parents of such things. I must say though, that if my two children were teens today I would warn them of such things before they even started with the internet.

A Typical Example OF Cyber-Bullying

A Typical Example OF Cyber-Bullying

It is estimated that more than 50% of children today are subjected to bullying of one form or another, and with the proliferation of teen chat websites like Ask.fm there is much more opportunity to those who feel the need the bully others.

Experts say that parents should look for certain signs in their children’s behaviour like suddenly becoming withdrawn, not wanting to go to school, or when a child or teenager who normally gets good grades in exams suddenly starts failing them. Even simple things like a lack of appetite or having trouble sleeping can be warning signs for parents that their child is having mental problems. The thing to do then is sit them down and talk about it. Sometimes it is necessary to press them a little to get the answers you want, for it is natural for many teens not to want to talk about such things as bullying, be it at school or via the computer or phone.

In this short film it is amazing how many people move away because they do not want to be involved. A terrible symptom of our modern society.

Physical Bullying In School

Physical Bullying In School

With the number of suicides constantly on the rise, I feel that it is time for legislative action by governments who must pass laws applicable to all social internet sites that make the ability to send anonymous messages against the law, and that every message is traceable back to its source. But it does not end there, for parents must also carry their share of the load by properly supervising a child’s internet usage and ensure they know what the password is so they can check intermittently what is being passed back and forth. By doing so they may discover early enough if their child is being bullied, or in fact if the child is him/herself a bully.

To be bullied, either at school or over the internet can be a traumatic experience for those in our society who are least equipped to deal with it, and that is why parents should remain aware at all times.

Lab Grown Meat? Hmmmm!

Posted in America, Britain, England, Environment, Health, Modern World, Obesity, UK, USA with tags , , , , on 06/08/2013 by floroy1942

Interesting to note that synthetic meat may soon be on the table, and I must admit to a certain amount of curiosity as to whether it will ever become popular. Grown in a petri dish from cow cells to form small strips of muscle, it is anticipated by many that this innovation could lead to a major upheaval in the food market. Myself, I don’t see it.

Synthetic Burger 'Meat'.

Synthetic Burger ‘Meat’.

The research is still in its initial stages, in fact the Maastricht University researchers have shown the first lab-grown beef burger to the world today, and two food critics have eaten it. Austrian food researcher Ms Ruetzler said: “I was expecting the texture to be more soft… there is quite some intense taste; it’s close to meat, but it’s not that juicy. The consistency is perfect, but I miss salt and pepper. This is meat to me. It’s not falling apart.” Food writer Mr Schonwald said: “The mouth feel is like meat. I miss the fat, there’s a leanness to it, but the general bite feels like a hamburger. What was consistently different was flavour.”

The two tasters were told that the raw product was coloured red with beetroot juice and the researchers also added breadcrumbs, caramel and saffron, which were intended to add to the taste. The scientists have stated that it is a work in progress, but it seems to me they have a long way to go before this product will have the taste of a real beef-burger. If this does prove to be even a little successful it will not be long  before they begin growing everything from pork to lamb.

One thing is for sure, all the essential nutrients and vitamins found naturally in beef will not be present in the basic product, and will probably have to be added superficially. I have no idea what American’s will make of this new product, but I do not think it will ‘take over the market’, especially at Macdonald’s and Burger King.

This product is touted as being an answer to the food shortage, especially in meat, and the environmentalists are excited because they ‘estimate‘ it will save 45% on energy, 96% on greenhouse gas emissions and 99% of the land used by cattle farmers to raise the meat placed on our tables. Where these figures come from is anyone’s guess. As you would expect, the animal rights campaigners have jumped on the bandwagon trumpeting about how it will end the humans barbaric practice of killing animals for food. I am sure the animals will be grateful.

The main thing I am concerned about however, is whether or not this product is safe. There are those who will argue that the product is natural because it is grown from real cow cells, but that does not cover all the additives that will eventually be added to give it the right taste and texture. Also of concern is the lack of natural nutrients that are contained in beef.

The beef we eat provides our bodies with protein, plus 14 essential vitamins and 11 essential minerals, all needed by our bodies to stay healthy. I cannot see this artificial beef providing even a quarter of these, which means they would have to be added artificially. After that there will be the necessary additives to provide the right taste in the mouth, for if that is not right people will not buy or eat it.

I would place such a product in the same category as GM crops, extremely suspect. Some countries have been producing genetically altered crops for several years, in particular the United States. As yet no-one has any idea of what these crops will do to the environment, and indeed, if they are really safe for consumption. There is the distinct possibility that in maybe ten or twenty years time we will see mysterious sicknesses arise in areas of the world that consume these products.

Naturally the developers, and in particular the manufacturers of these crops, will shout loud and clear that they are safe, because if someone could ever prove to the contrary they would go broke. To be honest, I have the same feeling about this present product. Once it hits the supermarket shelves, if it ever does, I know I will not knowingly eat it, and I suspect many others will feel the same. Sorry scientists, but meat is meat and you will never satisfactorily replicate it to my mind.

Roy.
