Antibiotics Are A Dying Cure-All

E-Coli Bacteria

E-Coli Bacteria

Ever been to the doctor and have him prescribe antibiotics for your ailment? Well, that may soon be a thing of the past. Doctors and scientists are beginning to discover that many serious diseases are becoming antibiotic resistant, and that is dangerous. For the last forty-odd years doctors in Britain, as in many other countries, have regularly prescribed this magic cure-all for everything from pneumonia to ear-ache and that has now become a major problem.

Scientists are calling this a threat of the same magnitude as global warming  when it comes to the survival of mankind in the future. We have relied on antibiotics for many decades as a bulwark against the serious and not-so-serious diseases that can infect us, but now time is running out because the bacteria are getting smarter, and we have no replacement that can defeat them.

A Surgeon 'Scrubs Up"

A Surgeon ‘Scrubs Up”

With the decline in effectiveness of antibiotics come severe problems, for in the future it will be a lottery if you go into hospital for an operation and pick up an infection. This is happening now with increasing frequency in hospitals across the world, even in western countries, as standards of hygiene continue to fall. At some time in the future contracting MRSA, pneumonia, E. coli or tuberculosis for example could be the death of you because the strains are becoming antibiotic resistant i.e. the wonder drug has no impact on them!

Medical Science - Our Last Hope

Medical Science – Our Last Hope

It is the natural way of bugs subjected to a single drug over many years to mutate into a strain that is resistant; ‘familiarity breeds contempt ‘ if you will. We do the same, and should therefore not be surprised when other lifeforms do it too. Sadly, research into new forms of antibiotics have been almost non-existent in recent years.

This future debacle could have been avoided if the medical profession had not severely over-prescribed antibiotics in the past for just about every infection from pimples to a cut finger. Now however we are entering a dangerous period in man’s history. Should a serious outbreak of any of the sicknesses that have become immune to antibiotics occur it could spread unchecked, and there would be nothing we can do about it. Quarantining the sick would be the only measure open to us to combat such an outbreak, but curing those inflicted would be nigh on impossible.

Middle Age Kitchen

Middle Age Kitchen

Another problem that has in my opinion exacerbated this situation is that we have become too clean in our ways. In the Middle Ages and before, they had no inspectors going around checking hygiene in food factories and restaurants, or chemicals to sterilize work surfaces in the home, and while I admit they are necessary, we should not take it too far. Back then, people ate things that would make many of us throw-up today, and yet they rarely got sick from it. The main reason for this is that their own immune systems were far stronger than ours today.

Food Off The Floor

Food Off The Floor

I remember as a child eating things that had dropped in the dirt or on the floor  and we never bothered about it, and more to the point I never got sick. The bottom line is that we have become so clean that our own immune system has weakened because it has had nothing to fight. I may be wrong because I am not an expert, but it is my belief.

Great PlagueWe are fast reaching a stage where things such as global warming are reducing in importance when it comes to a threat to our lives, for if we cannot find new effective antibiotics very quickly we will be in big trouble. Many of the poorer countries are regularly threatened by dangerous diseases, like Ebola in some African states in the past, but if such a thing spreads and we cannot turn to antibiotics for a cure, the consequences could be dire.

Anywhere - Anytime

Anywhere – Anytime

Any sickness can spread at an alarming rate thanks to over-population and the ease with which we travel across the world, so the scenario for a huge pandemic will be far higher than it was during the great plague of London in 1665-6 when 69,596 died in London alone. The figure for the whole country was in the region of 100,000.

Many will reply that medical science has improved by leaps and bounds since that time, but the backbone of all treatment for bacterial diseases today is still the antibiotic. When we no longer have that we will be in big trouble.

I think the ball now lies fair and square in the court of medical science, for they must vigorously seek a replacement for our everyday antibiotics and find something that will kill these immune bacteria before it is too late. I wish them good luck!

Is Sir David Attenborough Right? – Are Humans A Plague?

Posted in America, Britain, Children, Environment, Forests, Modern World, Oceans, UK, USA with tags , , , , on 25/01/2013 by floroy1942

I read with some interest the words of Sir David Attenborough, the world famous naturalist who is quoted as saying: “Humans are a plague on the Earth”.  I thought about it and I have to say I agree with him. We are!

Sir David Attenborough - A Much-Loved Naturalist

Sir David Attenborough – A Much-Loved Naturalist

No other species on the planet is so hell-bent on destroying it than us humans. He predicts that humanity’s ravenous appetite will come home to roost in around fifty years, and to be honest, I can find no fault with that. Regular readers of my blog will know my sentiments when it comes to saving the planet and what we are doing wrong.

Spiralling Oil Production

Spiralling Oil Production

It doesn’t take an idiot to realize that we are using up resources at an unsustainable rate, and a rampant population explosion is pushing our world far beyond the limits of it’s capacity to sustain us. Anyone who thinks our world can go on like this is living in ‘cloud cuckoo’ land.

A Starving Child- A Shocking Image

A Starving Child – A Shocking Image

If people think world population growth can be maintained without cost, they are wrong. People who think we can go on pumping oil, and even water, from the ground without the wells eventually running dry is a fool. Anyone who believes we can continue to poison the land and sea with our rubbish without paying a price is crazy. Anyone who thinks we can continue to destroy other species without consequences is an idiot.

Just A Tiny Fraction Of The World's Endangered Species

Just A Tiny Fraction Of The World’s Endangered Species

We humans have become so convinced of our dominance that we think we can do as we please, but the fact is, we are destroying the planet we call home at an ever increasing rate. Faster and faster it goes, and if we ignore it it will end in our own destruction.

It’s sad though that if you say this to the man on the street they laugh and think you are mad. The warnings are all around us, and yet we choose to be blind because it may affect our profits or our life-style! If you say to someone: “Take the bus because there are too many cars on the road and they are poisoning the planet’s atmosphere”, the answer you get may well consist of  two words, one of four letters and the second of three!

Three-car Family

Three-car Family

Scientists the world over have been warning us for a decade or more of what we are doing to our home, and yet no-one wants to listen because they really need the three cars on the driveway, and having multi-bulb lights on in the living room is so much cozier than one or two. We think nothing of tossing away a plastic bag and watching as the wind carries it away; someone, somewhere will pick it up. More often than not they don’t, and it ends up as another piece of garbage contaminating our countryside or oceans.

Just too many cars on the road:

Population Rise By Year

Population Rise By Year

According to the experts, and David Attenborough, our biggest challenge comes from the world population explosion. Naturally this problem is not being exacerbated everywhere, but in countries like India, Africa and many others the population is so huge there is not enough food for all of them. The experts predict this will begin to happen in more countries as they become more developed.

Large Families Will Be The Death Of Us All

As a race we cannot expect to all have five, six or ten children per family, because if everyone believed that it would be ‘standing room only’ for the entire human race. While birthrates have dropped considerably for most western nations, in many developing and third world countries they have gone through the roof and are still climbing day by day. To put it in ‘a nutshell’ our population is growing faster than the world’s capacity to feed us.

On the same theme, global warming is beginning to cost us huge areas that we need to grow food, so we can see that as the population increases, the amount of necessary arable land is decreasing. Oops!

Drought Killed Many Crops In The Mid-West

Drought Killed Many Crops In The Mid-West

The huge changes we have seen in the weather across the globe in 2012 is in my opinion just a taste of what is to come. Huge tracts of land in many countries used to grow crops suffered massive drought, while others had devastating floods that wiped out crops. Temperature changes across the world during the past year, and even now, have been devastating not only for people, but livestock and crops. The only comment I have on these occurrences is: Get used to it!

Within the next twenty to twenty-five years mankind will be faced with the greatest challenge since we first emerged from the swamps, but it will be a monumental task to alter the mindset of people today, for we have become so used to the ‘easy life’ we would hate to see it disappear.

Ocean Oil Rig

Ocean Oil Rig

I can well imagine that a world-wide panic will break out when the oil starts to run out. Already some oil fields across the world have been sucked dry, and it has been necessary to start drilling in the oceans and the Arctic to keep up with the ever-increasing demand. But what happens when they start to run dry? Will we then be forced to look even further afield, like the bottom of the Marianas Trench? We have to face it that at some time in the future it will run out, and as it starts to get scarce many nations will go to war over what is left.

But what of a simple thing like water? Many poor countries in  Africa and further afield rely on water pumped from the ground to keep their people alive, and in some cases, grow crops. This water, trapped underground for perhaps thousands of years is not inexhaustible. Some day the well will run dry, and what then?

African Rain Forest Destruction

African Rain Forest Destruction

Another  bone of contention these days is the ever-increasing destruction of our environment. Rain forests like the Amazon, African Congo, Borneo and Sumatra are being cut down without a thought that they are the lungs of the planet. Much of the climate change we have seen over the past year  can be attributed to the rain forest destruction, and I kid you not!

When Will The Well Run Dry?

When Will The Well Run Dry?

There has to come a point in our future when we are given the final wake-up call. When that happens people’s lives will change drastically. No more two or three cars per family, limits on electricity use, the disappearance of all those electrical gadgets around the home, limits on the number of children you may have, and international travel restrictions. Food and water may well be severely rationed, and to cap it all, your foreign summer holiday may be a thing of the past.

Many people will consider this post nothing more than moaning and complaining, but I believe it is a serious look at the problems mankind is facing, and the more people that bring this subject forward to world attention so much the better. We are without doubt living in the ‘golden age of man’ when you compare it to life in the past. We can travel the world in a few short hours, we have computers and electrical gadgets, personal wealth and unheard of health care, so it will be hard for people to give part of this up.

You Should Worry About Her Future

You Should Worry About Her Future

Most parents worry about their children’s future, but they must realize that it is closely intertwined with the reckless way we live today, and the effect we are having on the Earth. Most parents will recoil in shock if asked the straight question:  ‘Would you like your children to suffer oil wars, starvation and a polluted atmosphere?’ We all want a bright future for our children but we have to realize that we need to change our way of life for that to happen.

At our age it is certain that neither Sir David Attenborough or I will suffer like the generations to come, but I fear for our children and we have no-one to blame but ourselves. In short, unless action is taken and people’s attitude towards Planet Earth is changed drastically, humanity’s  greed will be the death of us – all of us!

Whichever way you look at it, things are going to get a lot worse before they get better unless every man woman and child decides to ‘bite the bullet’ and make the necessary changes to their life-style before it is too late. Good luck with that!

Is David Camerons’ Referendum Idea the Right Approach?

Posted in America, Britain, Conservative Party, David Cameron, Europe, Human Rights, Immigration, UK, USA with tags , , , on 24/01/2013 by floroy1942

Much has been reported recently about David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, saying he will hold a referendum on EU membership if re-elected in 2015. The question is; is this a good idea, and will the British people make the right decision? Various countries, media outlets and politicians are giving their opinion, but when it comes down to the wire it will be the general public who must decide the future of our country.

The White House

The White House

The Obama administration is already letting their dismay be known and that they are not in favour, saying Britain and the EU will be stronger together, and it has been hinted by some officials that any withdrawal by Britain from the EU could damage relations. The American government see the European Union as a strong military ally in the world, which is not surprising considering the Union’s involvement with America in the world’s trouble-spots. There is fear that the cooperation with America on military intervention, always so stoutly upheld by Britain, will be compromised.

India, and more particular China, have both expressed concern at the thought of Britain leaving the EU because of the massive amount of trade they both do with the Block. The European Union and Chine trade over £840 million per day and they see this as being grossly affected should Britain withdraw.

Abu Hamsa - Protected By The Human Rights Act

Abu Hamsa – Protected By The Human Rights Act

The main gripe the Brits have with Europe is the steady slide of more and more control slipping to Brussels and out of their hands. This is amply demonstrated by the total mess that our Judicial System is in because of interference from the politicians in Brussels. Since the introduction of the Immigration Laws, Human Rights Act and the Health and Safety Laws, which we are bound to follow, we have seen countless criminals getting away with murder because of some clause or other in the Human Rights Act such as Article Eight (the right to family life) which has been exploited by unscrupulous lawyers in Britain. You only have to look at the fact that it took the British Legal System 10 years to get rid of Abu Quatada, and we still haven’t been able to put Abu Hamsa on a plane to face terrorist charges in Jordan.

When it comes to the ‘elf & safety debacle, people have died because rescue services have been forced to follow nonsensical rules when it comes to saving people in distress. As for immigration, laws need to be rewritten so that it is no longer possible for one person to come in and be closely followed by his/her entire family, including uncles aunts, grandparents and grandchildren, all of whom live off the British taxpayer. We need to make sure when a man and his wife and children come in, it stops there! It needs to be made clear to immigrants that if they wish to settle in the UK they must learn the language, and there is a definite time limit to social welfare. In other words, get a job or get out!

Barroso - A Familiar Face

Barroso – A Familiar Face

The main problem with the EU is that with the exception of one or two well-known people like Jose Manuel Barroso, Europe is run by faceless individuals who are not answerable to the people. Does anyone from the general public know who represents our country in Brussels? I doubt that one in a thousand will know. The same problem exists in every European nation, and has led Brussels to be so far removed from the people they may as well be on the moon!

Abraham Lincoln said it better than anyone during his Gettysburg address when he pledged: “The government of the people, for the people, by the people”. It is this line from history that European politicians need to hinder, for to continue in the way they are could lead not only to Britain’s withdrawal, but to the breakup of the whole Union in time.

Open Borders

Open Borders

There are many many good things about the EU and the fact that so many countries can cooperate in the political and military spheres. It is wonderful to be able to travel across borders without all the customs and immigration checks, just as it is great not to have to change currency every time you cross a border. It is ideal that you can go and work in another country without all the hassle we used to have. There is no doubt that the benefits brought to us through EU integration have benefited our lives far more than those we have lost.

However, having said that, the areas outlined above plus a few more need to be relaxed. Judicial and Human Rights jurisdiction needs to be left to the nations and not dictated by Brussels. The national justice system must have a say in who goes to prison and who does not, and who gets extradited and who does not. Nations must decide the rights of its citizens, and the circumstances under which rescue services can save a life, not some faceless bureaucrat in Brussels.

There are of course many other areas of concern to the British people, as there must be in other European nations, but to list them all would turn this post into a book.

UK Exports By Year 1990 To 2006

UK Exports By Year 1990 To 2006

One other major concern that British voters must take into consideration when voting on such an issue is the economic impact. I have read recent reports proclaiming how Britain had most of its trade with Commonwealth nations before we joined the EU. Some seem to think that if we turn our back on Europe we can rekindle this relationship but I think they are dead wrong. Nations like Canada, Australia and New Zealand were suddenly ‘left in the lurch’ when Britain joined the EU and had to scramble to find alternative markets for their goods. These are now well established and it is unlikely Britain can replace its European trading partners with those of the Commonwealth again.

London has over the years become the financial hub of Europe with many major banks and companies having their headquarters in The City. If the British vote ‘No’ to Europe you can bet your last dollar there will be a mass exodus of these companies to somewhere like Berlin, Brussels, or even Amsterdam, and London will become a ghost of its former self. With so many empty office blocks in The City the economy of London will most likely collapse.

The City - Europe's Financial Centre

The City – Europe’s Financial Centre

The one fear I have is that if and when the referendum takes place, people will vote ‘No’ without thinking of the wider issues. The government cannot expect Mrs. Jones who lives at number 42 to have any idea of the economic consequences of leaving Europe.  It’s one thing to hate the interference from Brussels and shout that you want to be rid of them, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, such a move could spell economic disaster for the country.

It all hangs on how the referendum will be presented, and what questions will be asked of the public. If  the people are given a straight choice of  ‘in or out’ the backlash could be disastrous. On the other hand, if people are also asked which areas of control should be clawed back from Brussels, most will probably vote to stay in and give the government a firm indication of the changes the British want to see.

The British Prime Minister - David Cameron

The British Prime Minister – David Cameron

In my opinion, if the EU is to function as a cohesive element in the world countries have to be given back their national identity and not be told by the Brussels crowd the how, what and when of governing their own people. The politicians in Brussels should concern themselves with international politics, i.e. Europe as a whole, when communicating with the rest of the world.

I believe that the Prime Minster is firmly on the right track, but whatever happens, it is essential that David Cameron gives the general public a full understanding of what is at stake in the referendum.

Prince Harry Comes Under Fire

Posted in Afghanistan, America, Britain, England, Islamic Revolution, Terrorism, UK, USA with tags , , , on 23/01/2013 by floroy1942

Prince Harry is on the way home after his tour of duty as an Apache gunship pilot and already the slanging match has begun. This impressionable young man who has served his country well is now coming under fire from not only the Taliban, which one would expect, but also from the Afghan President, the British Press and of course, a Labour politician.

The Deadly Apache

The Deadly Apache

An agreement was made with the Press that he would give an open-hearted interview once his tour of duty was finished, provided they didn’t hassle him while he was in Afghanistan.  Now he has given it he is being criticised from all sides.

As you would expect, The Taliban has naturally jumped on the bandwagon with hunted Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar calling the Prince a ‘hyena’ and saying that the prince “comes to Afghanistan to hunt the innocent Afghans while he is drunk.”. That’s funny because another report has said that Harry, now in Cyprus, has just had his first drink of alcohol in five months.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar - A Confused Man?

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar – A Confused Man?

Mind you, Hekmatyar also told the newspaper that his Hizb-i-Islamia party was prepared to fight in the 2014 presidential elections, which will precede the final withdrawal of British and American troops from Afghanistan. Hekmatyar insisted that he wanted a “peaceful transition” from the present Afghan government to a new administration based on “free and fair elections.” once the troops leave. Believe that and you’ll believe anything because he also predicted that Afghanistan “will collapse into murderous civil war after Nato troops withdraw in 2014”. So it seems he is somewhat confused!

During the frank interview Prince Harry made a reference to his love of playing X-Box and PlayStation games during his free time and said: “It’s a joy for me because I’m one of those people who loves playing PlayStation and Xbox, so with my thumbs I like to think I’m probably quite useful,” referring of course to operating the many switches controlling the Apache weapons. Innocent enough, but my how the words have been misquoted and twisted by all. Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, is quoted as saying: “To describe the war in Afghanistan as a game demeans anyone – especially a prince, who is supposed to be made of better things.”

Sharifullah Kamawal

Sharifullah Kamawal

Sharifullah Kamawal, a member of the Afghan parliament, is of the opinion that Prince Harry’s comments will hasten the withdrawal of NATO Forces from Afghanistan, saying: “This makes the withdrawal process much faster, because for now half of the people say the foreign forces must stay for longer, but if they say these kind of things then more people will want them to go home.”

Labour's Jim Murphy - Get Off Your 'High Horse'

Labour’s Jim Murphy – Get Off Your ‘High Horse’

The one unnecessary criticism I found distasteful came from Labour’s Jim Murphy, the shadow defence secretary, who questioned the language the Prince had used. He is reported as saying: “I’m not going to second guess whether he should or shouldn’t have said it…..He’s obviously a young and brave man. He was candid. Perhaps he may have been more candid than the Palace may have wished.” Get off your high horse Murphy, or better still go out and defend Afghanistan from terrorism yourself instead of pontificating from the sidelines!

The fringe groups also had words of condemnation for Prince Harry’s interview when Lindsey German, who is convenor of the Stop The War Coalition, said the Prince’s comments were “crass” and asked how he knew those he killed were members of the Taliban. referring to the Prince’s comment that he had killed insurgents during his tour. Well, Ms. German I have news for you.

Lindsey German Of Stop The War.

Lindsey German Of  Stop The War Coalition

Let me put it to you straight Lindsey. If someone in Afghanistan is pointing a weapon at you or your comrades, you can be pretty sure he is a Taliban and intends to kill you!!!! In war the one thing you don’t do is hold up your hand to someone aiming a gun at you and ask: “Excuse me, are you Taliban?” before you shoot them.

I deplore these ‘high and mighty’ individuals who have no idea of the hard facts but just swallow the lies and half-truths put out by the Press, before getting up on their high horse to pontificate about something they know little of! If it were up to me I would give you a gun Ms. German and put you in the front-line alongside the troops, so that you have a chance to wake up to the real world and not the dream world you inhabit! Personally I wouldn’t give an inch of press space to someone making such stupid comments.

Shot For Wanting An Education - This Why We Fight The Taliban

Shot For Wanting An Education – This Is Why We Fight The Taliban

Please remember Ms. German that it was the Taliban that shot Malala Yousafzaia a short time ago, and all she wanted was to be educated. It makes no difference that the attack on Malala happened in Pakistan, they are all the same group. Do you support the Taliban who shot her? For if you want the war against them to stop you surely do! These insurgents were responsible for gross atrocities against women when they controlled Afghanistan. Think about them apples!

Whatever criticism comes his way, for me Prince Harry has done an outstanding job in Afghanistan, and although the restricted Prince William is doing a brave and necessary job in Search and Rescue, it is Harry that has actually put himself in the firing line twice against an insurgency that must be beaten, one way or another.

The sad thing is, it seems members of the Royal Family are easy targets for the Press and anyone else who wants to ‘have a go’ at someone. As you would expect, St James’ Palace declined to comment.

Self-Drive Cars – Are They Viable?

Posted in America, Britain, England, Europe, Modern World, UK, USA with tags , , , , , on 17/01/2013 by floroy1942

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is normally all about the latest innovations in electronics, but there have been some interlopers this year that have drawn significant interest – namely cars, or to be more exact, self-driving cars.

Sergey Brin Of Google

Sergey Brin Of Google

It is widely presumed that at some future time you will be able to read the local newspaper or catch up on some work while driving to the office. If you are hung-over from last nights party you could even get some extra sleep, but for today however, its still science fiction.

After reading some reports on the development of self-drive cars it becomes clear that we still have a long way to go despite the fact that Governor Edmund G Brown Jr. of California has signed a Bill allowing driver-less cars in the State after riding in a Prius upgraded by Google and ‘driven’ by co-founder Sergey Brin.

BMW On The Road

BMW On The Road

There can be little doubt that the technology is available today for the production of these vehicles, but at the moment the hold-up is that its not quite ready for the job because no-one wants to drive around in a car that has antenna’s sticking out all over it. Given time however, these problems will be overcome and we will see the first versions going into production. In my opinion it may take another ten years but the time is fast approaching.

The big question in many people’s minds is: Would you trust your life to a box of electronics built into your car?

Pilots In The Cockpit Make Everyone Feel Comfortable

Pilots In The Cockpit Make Everyone Feel Comfortable

We have for many years had the technology for pilot-less planes that will take-off, fly you to your destination and land without any human intervention, but the truth is, no-one wants to fly in an airliner that does not have a pilot at the controls. In the back of most people’s minds there is the fear that something may happen that is outside the scope of a box of electronics to fix. Many passengers still don’t realize that apart from the take-off and landing the flight is controlled by the ‘box of tricks’ in the electronics bay anyway. Apart from the final 200 feet or so landings can be automated where bad weather does not allow the pilot to see where he’s going.

Toyota Lexus Experimental Car

Toyota Lexus Experimental Car

So what about cars? Your daily commute to work or the wife’s shopping trip could be fully automated but would you step into such a car knowing that although you sit in the drivers seat you are nothing more than a passenger? I believe in the majority of cases the answer would be: No way! As humans we like to feel we are in charge and its our decisions that count so to hand over control to a bunch of circuit boards and wires would indeed be a big step. I can well foresee that eventually we will get over our phobia’s but it will take a long time and we will need a lot of convincing.

Could Be A Problem!

Could Be A Problem!

Several auto manufacturers have been experimenting in this area including Toyota, Ford, BMW, Audi and Lincoln and much progress has been made, most of it in the right direction thankfully. Driver-less cars have been tested on our roads for a very long time, and the funny thing is, no-one has ever noticed even though the manufacturers have notch up thousands of miles. One thing is for sure it won’t have been the idiot tail-gating you on the motorway!

All manufacturers hope driver-less cars will greatly reduce the number of accidents on the worlds’ roads, which is admirable. As you can imagine, where the car goes will be dependent on a sophisticated navigation system that ensures you end up in the right place. Its no good you wanting to go from Las Vegas to Chicago and end up in Ontario Canada.

One Task Left To Us Humans!

One Task Left To Us Humans!

I’ll leave you with one last thought: Will driver-less cars also fill their own petrol tank when required or will that mundane chore be left up to the human passenger?

Lance Armstrong Is Not The Only Liar!

Posted in America, Europe, Modern World, USA with tags , , , , , , on 16/01/2013 by floroy1942

One of the top news items recently has been the fact that Lance Armstrong, seven times winner of the Tour de France, has finally come clean about his involvement in drug abuse. For 15 years he steadfastly denied that he had taken any performance enhancing drugs but was eventually caught out by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and banned for life. Serves him right I say.

The Oprah Interview

The Oprah Interview

Having had ample opportunity to ‘come clean’ he has consistently denied having anything to do with drugs, but now, suddenly he has done just that during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Naturally, there is a sinister motive behind the confession – he wants to get back into sport again! By finally admitting his offences he hopes the USADA will now wipe the slate clean and allow him to ride in Triathlon events.

It seems to me that outright honesty died a tragic death many years ago, for he is not the only person in the world who will not admit to wrong doing. We see it across the whole world where, in particular politicians, refuse to admit their guilt when faced with accusations of impropriety. Other cases in point are Strauss-Kahn and currently the Prime Minister of Pakistan who has been arrested for corruption.

Everywhere we can immediately assume that any offender will enter a ‘Not Guilty’ plea when charged with a crime even when caught red-handed with a ‘smoking gun’ in their hands. Its all a sure-fire indication of the lack of integrity and honesty among people these days. In the minds of the guilty there is always the glimmer of hope that they will get away with whatever it is they have done wrong, and this ranges from corruption through to outright murder.

It may seem like nothing to the ordinary individual but you have to consider the massive expense in many cases of taking the ‘villain’  to court and the long drawn out process of the trial, lawyers fees etc. all at the tax payers expense. Of course the lawyers like it because it makes them rich, and we all know they are at the top of everyone’s tree when it comes to who you distrust the most.

It’s a sign of the times, and there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do about it until people once again learn the essentials in life: Integrity, honesty and respect.

The Science Of Child Spanking

Posted in America, Britain, Child Abuse, Child Discipline, Children, Modern World, Parenting, Teen alcohol abuse, Teen Violence, UK, USA with tags , , on 13/01/2013 by floroy1942

Scientists are losing touch with reality, that’s my opinion of today’s report on research published in the autumn 2012 Journal of Family and Marriage by researchers Andrea Gromoske and Kathryn Maguire-Jack into the psychological effects of spanking recalcitrant children.

Child Temper Tantrum

Child Temper Tantrum

The researchers believe that giving a very young child a smack across the bottom when they are naughty will make them more aggressive around age three, and lead to depression at age five. What a load of hogwash! I have never subscribed to the belief that you should not smack your children when they misbehave and I never will. At the age they are talking about a light smack is all that’s required to get the message home. It should never be necessary to give a small child a walloping on the backside because I believe that is bordering on child abuse.

Over the past thirty years, parents have been told they should never smack their children by people who are ‘in the know’, and look what has happened in the world. These ‘do-gooders’ have forced their opinions onto everyone and had laws put in place that actually forbid you giving your child a smack when they misbehave. Instead you are supposed to use psychology on children and tell them what they did is wrong and they should not do it again, but if they ignore you as most do, what then?

No Discipline

No Discipline

When this idea first gained a foothold in the seventies one of my brothers-in -law at the time used this approach with his first born son. He turned out to be a right little B&*T+*D and many of the family told him to leave the child at home if he came to visit. As you would expect, with his second child everything changed and he turned out well!

Binge Drinking Be-gets Violence

Binge Drinking Be-gets Violence

Many of today’s teenagers, are extremely aggressive, have little or no respect for anyone or anything, ‘binge drink’ and more often than not take drugs as a way out because they are unable to handle the normal stresses and strains of life. Many wonder why!

People have forgotten the basic fact that baby’s are like a blank slate and everything they learn comes from us, their parents. It is up to us to teach them the essentials in life like respect for others and the law, honesty, reliability, disappointment, and the basic ability to shoulder the many ups and downs of life in general.

Your Child?

Your Child?

The massive failure of parents over the last thirty years has led us to today where many teenagers turn to drugs as an escape from life’s troubles, get into gangs, steal, and in general look for an excuse to ‘have-a-go’ at the police as is witnessed regularly by rioting teens. In my opinion, any parent who really cares about their children would make the effort to teach them right from wrong at every opportunity. If as a parent you are not ready to do this, you don’t deserve to have children.

The trouble is, it often takes a smack across the backside to enforce the message, and this is what the scientists are saying is making very young children aggressive, and turning 5-7 year-olds into depressives. Poppycock!

Old Style Discipline - And It Worked!

Old Style Discipline – And It Worked!

Parents have been using this form of discipline for centuries and it has worked ninety-nine times out of a hundred without children having the symptoms these researchers describe. When a young child starts to get aggressive this must be got out of them at the first sign in the firmest way. They have to learn from a very early age that aggression is not the way to get what they want. That is why you have to be strict with children from the very beginning, for then they learn quickly and it no longer becomes necessary to repeat a chastisement. Given the opportunity, all children will get aggressive if they think they can gain by it – it’s human nature after all.

Embarrassing?

Embarrassing?

In countless supermarkets I have seen many young children throw a tantrum because they want a bag of crisps or sweets off the shelf and mother doesn’t want to give it to them. More often than not, as the child screams and shouts, she cannot be bothered to stand her ground and gives way. Naturally, the child learns that if they throw a tantrum they can get what they want and the seed is sown. Here a soft smack on the back of the hand or leg makes the point that they cannot have what they want when they want it and they should behave. Shouting at them to behave achieves nothing. But of course now we could get in trouble with the law because if you chastise your child in this way in public, there is always some ‘holier than thou’ arsehole who thinks they know better and calls the police. The answer is to either go outside or find a quiet aisle.

All Grown Up And Ready To Face Life

All Grown Up And Ready To Face Life

When my two children were growing up they both got a few smacks across the buttocks when they wouldn’t listen and in fact I even used a slipper with my son on a couple of occasions. I only needed to chastise them in this way three or four times and after that they took notice when I told them something. I never went in for child abuse or anything even close and I abhor those that do, but I taught my children all the qualities that are required of people and I am happy to say they both turned out to be exemplary adults, honest, hard-working and respectful. You never saw my son hanging around on a street corner wearing a hood and causing trouble for passers-by.

This Approach Will Never Work On Its Own.

Don’t Waste Your Breath Madam!

So I am afraid these scientists have got it dead wrong in my opinion. I have always believed that it is essential to draw a line on what is and is not acceptable behaviour, and make children understand what they need to know to be a success in life. It’s the old saying: “If you give them an inch they will take a mile”. The kind of message that is being sent out by this ‘research’ is extremely misleading and inevitably many parents will consider it ‘The Holy Grail’ of parenting. They will find out in future years when their off-spring go off the rails.
