The Wasted Lives of NATO Troops in Afghanistan?

Posted in Afghanistan, America, Britain, Insurgents, Sharia Law, Taliban, Terrorism, UK, United Nations, USA with tags , on 28/08/2012 by floroy1942

By the end of 2014 all NATO Coalition troops will have left Afghanistan completely, and what then? Well, considering the recent spate of attacks on not only civilians, but also the military, I think the Taliban will be back in charge within a few months. In my opinion major mistakes have been made by the occupying NATO and United States Forces, in that they made no serious effort to destroy the Taliban completely.

With All Their Power They Could Not Defeat the Mujahideen

It has been more or less  a copy of the Soviet occupation of 1979 when they could not totally defeat the Mujahideen fighters of the period and left in ignominious defeat in 1989. Now NATO and its U.S. Allies face the same prospect of defeat, although they have achieved much more than the Russians ever did.

Even the Pakistan assault of 2009 on the Taliban and al Quada in the border provinces fizzled out without any real gains because they didn’t complete the job, and  the fact that NATO did not at the same time assault their positions from the Afghan side meant the Taliban could just withdraw across the border until the Pakistan Army gave up. Which they did. A far better operation would have been a joint assault from both sides of the border giving the Taliban and al Quada fighters no-where to run.

Taliban In Action

It is a big mistake to leave the Taliban intact when the NATO and U.S. troops finally pull out in 2014 for they are waiting patiently, knowing that when that day comes they can step right back in and control most, if not all of the country.

In Helmand Province the atrocity of beheading 17 people for watching two women dancing this weekend is proof enough that they are in charge there, and such acts ensure the people  are scared enough not to deny them when they make a comeback. They come and go at will, and kill whomsoever they please and it seems no-one can stop them. So carry this thought through and you come to the obvious conclusion. While well-intentioned, this war has been a miserable waste of lives because the commanders could not make good strategy calls to deal with the Taliban once and for all.

Afghan Army – Friend or Foe?

It is a fact that most of the lives lost have been Afghan but that is part of the picture, to make people too scared to stand up to them in case they are next could be the ultimate aim. If someone holds a gun to your head and says ‘we are taking over’, not many people will refuse! Its a ‘cat and mouse’ game with the ordinary citizens of Afghanistan that to my mind, will result in the Taliban being once more in control soon after the Coalition forces leave. They have already successfully infiltrated the police and army, which can be substantiated by the number of Coalition deaths caused when these people turn their guns on their benefactors.

President Karzai

So when the crunch comes, as it will, who is going to stop the Taliban takeover? President Karzai and his government? I doubt whether they will have much say in the matter when the Taliban drive though the streets of Kabul shooting off their AK 47’s. I think Karzai will be on the first plane out of Kabul and spend the rest of his life enjoying the fruits of his years as president. But I guess like everything else in life, time will tell!

Did Julia Gillard Give A Controversial Speech on Muslims in Australia?

Posted in America, Britain, David Cameron, Europe, Germany, Islamic Revolution, Muslim, Obama, UK, USA with tags , , , on 28/08/2012 by floroy1942

E-mails are right this minute flashing around the globe saying that Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia, made a speech saying ‘in a nutshell’ that “Muslims must adapt to the Australian way of life and accept the country for what it is, or leave”.

The Julia Gillard Premiership.

A little research however has proven this not to be the case. It does however highlight the on-going controversy among private citizens in most western countries, that the minority Muslim populations have far too much power, and are trying to turn them into Muslim states. I write of course of countries like Great Britain, Canada, America, France, The Netherlands and Germany among others.

In all of these countries the Muslim minority refuse to integrate, demonstrate openly on the streets for Sharia Law, and refuse to accept the culture and traditions of their adopted country. All this makes me think it is perhaps time that the leaders of these countries have balls enough to stand up in public and let these people know we will never surrender our lands to their ideology!

In conclusion, I add the ‘so-called’ Gillard Speech:

‘Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia Law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. Separately, Gillard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying she supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques.’

Prime Minister Julia Gillard-Australia:

Julia Gillard – Australian Prime Minister

‘IMMIGRANTS, NOT Australians, MUST ADAPT . Take It Or Leave it.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, We have experienced a rise in patriotism by the majority of Australians. ‘

‘This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.’

‘We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian,
or any other language. THEREFORE, if you wish to become part of our society … Learn the language! ‘

‘Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented . Certainly it is appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. ‘

‘We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us. ‘

‘This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, ‘THE RIGHT TO LEAVE’. ‘

” If you are not happy here then LEAVE. We did not force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU adopted. ‘

Some people will consider this a hate speech, but it is not, it is purely an attempt by the indigenous populations of many countries to assert what is theirs by right and by God.

So come on Prime Ministers David Cameron, Stephen Harper, Mark Rutte, Jean-Marc Ayrault, Angela Merkel and President Obama, where are your balls? This is after all what we are all thinking!

If Allah Is Merciful, Then Why Do Muslims Hate So Much?

Posted in Al Quada, America, Britain, Child Abuse, Christianity, Human Rights, Islamic Revolution, Muslim, Religion with tags , , on 20/08/2012 by floroy1942

I read with complete horror yesterday about a mentally disabled 11 year-old Pakistani girl who was arrested by the police at the behest of a baying mob of Muslims. They accused her of blasphemy because she supposedly carried a sack of rubbish with some pages of the Koran mixed in. It was probably just a coincidence that she was Christian from a Christian family, or so they will have us believe.

At first the police were loath to take action, but a large screaming crowd of Muslims threatened to start burning down Christian homes if they did not arrest her. It was widely known that the girl had a mental condition but this did not stop the Muslim crowd. When the girl, who is dyslexic, arrived at the police station she could not even answer the police questions. As a result of the disturbance some 600 Christian families have been forced to flee for their lives. Even though the police could find no trace of Koran pages in the sack she carried, the girl is currently being held in Islamabad prison “for her own protection”.

Salman Taseer

Pakistan has long fought a battle with Muslims over the contentious ‘Blasphemy Laws’ currently in force. Several politicians have tried to change them but it has cost them their lives. In 2011 Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who was a prominent critic of the law, was assassinated by his bodyguard, and in March 2011 Religious Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was shot dead in Islamabad.

The Killer – How Pleased He Looks.

There is no great rush to follow in their shoes by members of the Pakistani government, although most would like very much to see these laws repealed. Part of the problem is that the blasphemy laws are often mis-used by Muslims to ‘get even’ with anyone they see as having offended them. The head of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Zora Yusuf is quoted as saying: “It has been exploited by individuals to settle personal scores, to grab land, to violate the rights of non-Muslims, to basically harass them”.

The laws originated in India in 1860, were expanded in 1927, and eventually carried over into Pakistan Law when the country was first formed in 1947. Since that time these laws have been a bone of contention. They were expanded in 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1986, each time getting more discriminatory, with harsher sentences for the most minor infractions of the so-called ‘Muslim Code’. In certain parts of Pakistan, as a Christian you are better staying at least one hundred yards away from any Muslim or copy of the Koran, and keeping your mouth tightly closed. But all this is not the subject of this post.

Killed For Being A Christian?

To put it bluntly, if you ask any Muslim what Allah stands for, they will tell you that he is a peaceful God of mercy. So now comes the big question. If that is a righteous description of Allah and what he stands for, why are most Muslims so full of hate for anyone who is not a Muslim? Why do they demand that a mentally disabled girl of eleven be arrested and tried for carrying a bag full of waste that may or may not have contained a page or two of the Koran? Why are non-Muslims hung from street lamps, stoned to death, or spend the rest of their lives in a prison cell on some trumped up charge? Why are Christians for example vilified and killed all over the world just because they are not Muslims? Questions, questions, but never any satisfactory answers.

Do they think that this is what their wise, peaceful, and merciful Allah wants? Because I have to admit, it certainly doesn’t sound like it to me. Non-Muslims live in perpetual fear in countries with a large Muslim population, and many have been killed in his name.

Typical Muslims Who Follow the Teachings of Allah?

So what does this all mean? Is it that the Muslim perception of Allah is wrong and that he is in fact a merciless God who wants control of the world at any price? This I doubt. Could it be that there are evil men who profess to be Allah’s messengers (you know who I mean), who delight in seeing such destruction and death because it makes them feel powerful? Control over a blind, mindless mob is still power! I think this comes closer to the truth. How could bin Laden have said he is doing the work of Allah on 9/11 if his God is wise, merciful and peaceful?

I would be more than happy to hear the real truth behind Islam if any Muslim cares to comment. I am also sure there are many millions of non-Muslims who would too! May the peace of Allah be upon you.

Senkaku / Diaoyu Islands – The Dispute

Posted in America, Demonstration, Environment, Insanity, Oceans, UN, United Nations, USA with tags , , , on 18/08/2012 by floroy1942

Part of the Chain of Islands

It seems incredible that two of the world’s most powerful economies can get into a major political spat over a small group of uninhabited islands, that with the exception of one or two are not much bigger than a postage stamp, and most appear to be nothing more than large rocks sticking up out of the sea.

The Bonito Factory

The world has had to listen to claim and counter-claim over the disputed islands for the last few months, and there seems to be no end to it. History tells us that the Chinese first recorded the existence of this pimple in the sea as early as the 15th century but did nothing further about them. On 14 January 1895 the Japanese government claimed the islands as part of Japan and built a bonito (a species of predatory fish) processing plant on the islands, and at the time the Chinese made no objections. The business failed in 1940 and the islands have remained deserted ever since.

In 1945 the islands came under American control until 1971 when they were handed back to the Japanese under the Okinawa Reversion Treaty. While under US control, in 1969 a UN Economic Commission  (ECAFE) identified possible oil and gas reserves under the seabed surrounding the islands, and suddenly China started to take notice. Oops! Now money enters the equation! In fact its the Falklands scenario all over again.

Senkaku Islands Location

We have recently entered the period of diplomatic warnings and landings by the Chinese on the islands to claim sovereignty, but how this dispute will end is anyone’s guess. However,  with oil and gas in the mix you can bet there will be a long hard struggle between China and Japan for final control of these otherwise useless rocks.

Latest update 19 August: Now many Chinese people are demonstrating in the streets about something they never even knew existed at this time last year. Talk about a crazy world!

The U.S. Presidential Election – Can It Get More Shameful?

Posted in America, Government, Modern World, Obama, President, USA with tags , , , , , on 11/08/2012 by floroy1942

If I were an American I would hang my head in shame at the antics of Romney and Obama who are vying for the most powerful position in the world, that of American President. To have watched from the sidelines this war of words between two heavyweight contenders for the post, is to say the least, a travesty, and an insult to intelligent men and women everywhere.

The Fight Is On.

Why the American public has put up with this comedy during elections over the past twenty years or so is totally beyond me. For almost a year the two contenders trade insults and barbs, drag up whatever dirt they can find and call each other liars just to gain the public favour in a vote that will take place in November. In my opinion, this diminishes both the persons involved, the American people and the country. If this is politics in the 21st century I want nothing of it.

Whatever happened to the times when men of power were voted in on their suitability, their politics, and their trustworthiness. All that has gone out the window, and now its a mud-slinging contest with the one to whom the least amount of mud sticks becoming the winner (I heard that somewhere before). Sorry, but that is not how it should be!

Grrrrr! – Grrrrr Yourself!

The sad fact is, that this current campaign system has become so entrenched over the past twenty years that it is unlikely to change. It will just get dirtier and more sordid. Maybe it might be better to just give them each a gun and let them fight it out cowboy style! At least the world would not be bored to tears  with a battle of words.

The entire election system in America is in desperate need a major overhaul with (a) the election campaign restricted to say no more than three months (in fact the shorter the better), and (b) no more mud-slinging. Aspiring Presidents should be made to stick to laying out their credentials for the post, their policies, and what they think they can do for the country and its people. The re-election of Presidents should also be weighed on the their past record in office.

Another thing I hate about the current system is this drumming up of campaign contributions from the rich and powerful, because there is often a payback. From my point of view it seems more like a way of gaining influence. In this world you get nothing for nothing, and you can bet your last dollar that all these rich and powerful business people want a favour in return for the millions they contribute. It’s the old ‘You scrub my back and I’ll scrub yours’ syndrome. In an election for the post of most powerful person on the planet it stinks to high heaven!

You Scrub My Back…..

I may be an outsider  when it comes to America and its politics, but what I see daily on the news does not inspire one little bit of confidence in me for the future. I know for sure that if I were an American citizen, I would start campaigning for a change in the system and do my utmost to start cleaning up Capitol Hill and the White House. I would consider it my duty as an American citizen!

‘The Cloud’ Scares The Hell Out Of Me!

Posted in America, Britain, Europe, Hackers, Muslim, UK, USA with tags , , , , on 09/08/2012 by floroy1942

The recent experiences of Matt Honan in the USA have highlighted a major problem with ‘The Cloud’ that in my opinion is only going to get worse. Over the last few days we have heard about Matt’s case where his entire digital life was erased by a hacker who got into his account via the Apple Tech Assistance. This is just the first of what I am sure is going to be a sustained attack by hackers to get at people’s private data.

Everything Is Connected – Everywhere

Until now, all my private data was kept on my hard-drive in my computer and with the proper anti-virus software and a good firewall I have been able to keep hackers out, but now? With the introduction of this ‘Cloud’ thingamy I am no longer master of my own data. It will in the future be stored somewhere in cyberspace because all computer companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft are going ‘Cloud’. If I wish to keep up with the latest technology I have no choice but to go along with it, whether I wish to or not. To me this is setting a very dangerous precedent, and the day will come when the whole thing comes crashing down.

If He Doesn’t Trust It Neither Do I

I am certainly not the only one with this opinion, for Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple has also said in public that he sees ‘horrendous problems’ in the future as cloud-based computing takes hold. He said.”I really worry about everything going to the cloud, I think it’s going to be horrendous. I think there are going to be a lot of horrible problems in the next five years.” He added: “With the cloud, you don’t own anything. You already signed it away” through the legalistic terms of service with a cloud provider that computer users must agree to. I want to feel that I own things. A lot of people feel, ‘Oh, everything is really on my computer,’ but I say the more we transfer everything onto the web, onto the cloud, the less we’re going to have control over it.” Well! For my money, he should know better than most of us.

Sure, its nice to be able to transfer information between my iPhone, tablet and computer, but at what cost. My data will never have been more vulnerable! All the experts talk of their security arrangements for the cloud with encryption and passwords and all that other baloney, but hackers are not as stupid as the presuppose. The United States government and defence systems are among the most secure on the planet, but that hasn’t stopped hackers getting in time and time again. So what chance do we have with the ‘Cloud’.

The Tip Of The Iceberg, And They Are Not The Real Criminals

You can bet your last dollar that at sometime in the near future someone is going to get in again and create havoc. Just imagine, the passwords, bank details, e-mail addresses, correspondence and all the rest of the data you and I, and tens of millions of others wish to keep to ourselves will be available to the first low-life who gets in. The experts can rabbit on forever about how ‘safe’ it all is but they will never convince me, and they should not convince you with all their glib talk.

Its always the same old story, when someone comes along with an idea that will be a  huge benefit to the world, there is always someone who will use it for personal profit. Criminals hack into our computers looking for bank passwords and the like, and the Spam, market is growing day by day. Imagine if someone managed to get into the Cloud! Of course, I know everyone has protected their data with a personal password etc. and there must be millions in the Cloud, but that will not stop these nasty individuals from creating havoc once they have penetrated the outer defences, and as we saw last week, they are easy to breach.

Waiting For An Opportunity

If we the people allow this travesty we will have no-one to blame but ourselves when the muck hits the fan. I just bought a new iPhone 4S yesterday, but you can bet your life I did not activate the ‘Cloud’ function and I am sure I never will. Hopefully, Apple, Google and Microsoft will give users the option of joining the ‘Cloud’ just like the 4S phone, otherwise I will be very annoyed at being forced to use something I do not consider safe.

If there was a movement to counter the introduction of the ‘Cloud’ I would be the first to sign up. I feel safer with my old P.C. hard-drive and I would willingly enter the ‘Cloud’ like I would enter the fires of Hell.

Searching For Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence – Is It Wise?

Posted in America, Britain, Modern World, UK, USA with tags , , , , , , on 06/08/2012 by floroy1942

For as long as it has been technically possible, scientists have been monitoring the heavens for any sign of an intelligent race somewhere among the stars. To date of course no such thing has been found, but what if we did get a signal from some other life form out there in the Cosmos? The next big question would be: Do we respond?

Hollywood Aliens Come In All Shapes And Sizes

We have all at some time or another seen the Hollywood version of an invasion from space by a technically superior race of beings that look like anything from a beetle to something vaguely human. In typical Hollywood fashion it then becomes a test of survival for the human race against the nasty aliens. Somehow we always manage to find a method of overcoming them and sending them back where they came from with their tail between their legs! True Hollywood stuff!

But what of reality? What would we do if we did get a signal? Questions would be flying around the globe with many saying we should respond, while others would be more circumspect. There can be little doubt that if ‘they’ were able to send a message, receive a reply and start a conversation, it would make them far more technologically advanced than we are at the present time.

Pioneer 10

The human race already took a risk when Pioneer 10 was launched in March 1972 to study Jupiter and Saturn, and was then sent into deep space on the 1st of January 1974 after completing its planned tasks in our solar system. On board is a plaque showing the outline of a male and female, plus the position of Earth relative to our sun.

It carried telemetry to send regular reports back to Earth and the last successful reception of data was received 27th April 2002. Further attempts at communication with the satellite were made on 23rd January 2003 but the signal was too weak. In October 2009 it was estimated that Pioneer 10 had reached a distance of 100 A.U. (astronomical units: 1 unit equals 149,598,000 kilometers).

Pioneer 11 quickly followed its counterpart and was launched fourteen months later in 1973 and spent six years exploring the asteroid belt, Saturn and Jupiter before leaving our solar system on the 10th of October 1979. Both Pioneer probes were sent in opposite directions into deep space. Pioneer 10 was sent into space away from the centre of our galaxy, whereas Pioneer 11 was sent towards it.

Voyager 1 Flight Path

The two Pioneer missions were followed by the Voyager programme with probes 1 and 2, the first was launched by NASA in 1979 and again, after exploration of the asteroid belt, Saturn and Jupiter, they too were sent into deep space.

Voyager’s Golden Record

As with the Pioneer probes, each carried a plaque giving any finder information about Earth. It also included photos of the Earth and its lifeforms, a range of scientific information, spoken greetings from people, namely the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the United States, and a “Sounds of Earth” recording that included the sounds of whales, a baby crying, waves breaking on a shore, and a collection of Earth music, including works by Mozart and Chuck Berry. To be honest, I cannot imagine what an alien race would think of Chuck Berry!

What really interests me is what they would think of our planet if they manage to decipher what is on the disc. Depending on what they need to survive, like atmosphere, food etc. they could either find our Earth enticing or repulsive. To find a probe they would have to be much more advanced than we are and quite capable of interstellar travel, something that is not even on the horizon for mankind. We would no doubt be to them as the Neanderthals are to us, so what would they do, what would they want from us?

One Of The Most Famous Hollywood Aliens

Naturally, they may be benevolent and pass on some of their wisdom to us, or, they may decide we are ripe for the picking and annihilate us all. It may well be that all our weapons would be useless against such an advanced race and the only way we could defeat them would be bacteriological warfare and infest them with our human diseases. “Here you go mate. Try some anthrax or Ebola!”. Of course, on the other hand they may consider us so primitive that they leave us alone. In the immortal words of Captain James T. Kirk: “Beam me up Scotty. There’s no intelligent life down here!”

Gliese 581 Orbits A Red Dwarf

One thing is for sure, if the probes are ever discovered by some advanced race of beings somewhere out there among the stars, the fate of mankind may hang in the balance if they ever decide to come and have a look at us. However, considering the distances involved, the nearest Earth-like planet to us so far discovered is Gliese 581, which is around 192 trillion kilometres from Earth or 20.3 light years away, so maybe there is some comfort in that. But, science fiction has often speculated on the existence of wormholes and travelling at the speed of light, and when you think about, it could only take them 20.3 days to get here if they are so far advanced. Scary thought!

No, to me its a scenario that is best left alone, and I just hope that all these people listening to the stars for sounds of intelligent life do not answer the call if, or when it comes.

A Question of Honour? – The Killing of Shafilea

Posted in Arab, Britain, Child Abuse, England, Human Rights, Justice, Muslim, Parenting, Religion, Sharia Law, Teens with tags , on 04/08/2012 by floroy1942

In your family does the ‘honour’ of the family rate above the life of one your children? No of course not, I would be surprised if it did. But strange though it may seem, in some cultures it is like that. This last week in Britain, Pakistani couple Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed were jailed for a minimum of 25 years for killing their own daughter because she was ‘too westernized’ and thereby brought dishonour to the family name.

Their daughter Shafilea was a bright, ambitious seventeen-year-old who dreamed of being a lawyer, but she had one fatal flaw, she enjoyed the western way of life in a culture she had grown up in since birth. This was in direct contradiction to the strict Muslim upbringing forced on her by her parents. Shafilea liked to dress up in western clothes, buy things for herself and have boyfriends, but this is not the Muslim way. In the words of Justice Roderick Evans, at Chester Crown Court who passed sentence: “She [Shafilea] was being squeezed between two cultures, the culture and way of life that she saw around her and wanted to embrace, and the culture and way of life you (the parents) wanted to impose upon her; an expectation that she live in a sealed cultural environment separate from the culture of the country in which she lived was unrealistic, destructive and cruel.” He added, “Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than your love of your child.”

Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed had always told Shafilea she would be married off to a stranger in Pakistan in a so-called ‘arranged marriage’ but in early 2003 she rebelled and fled the family home. Her freedom did not last long for she was captured, drugged, and taken to rural Punjab in Pakistan where she was to be married to a man ten years her senior. In a desperate attempt to forestall the arrangement, she drank a quantity of bleach and became very ill. Her throat was very badly damaged and the ‘suitor’ declined to marry her. After this she was immediately shipped back to the UK and her parents, who locked her in her room, beating and starving her into submission.

Family Honour Was Worth More Than Their daughter

On October 11th 2003 Farzana Ahmad picked up her daughter from school and saw her in clothes she considered indecent. In her opinion, Shafilea had brought shame on the family and once home she was killed in front of her brother and sisters. This presumably as a lesson to their other offspring. In court the two were found guilty of ramming a plastic bag in her mouth and covering her nose until she choked to death. They then dumped her body beside the River Kent in Cumbria, England, in February 2004.

Iftikhar Ahmed arrived in the UK at the age of ten and was therefore fully aware of western culture and habits. He was previously married to a Danish woman and was known to ‘socialize’ while living in Denmark, however, he married his current wife, Farzana in 1985 in Pakistan.

Alisha Ahmed

In the years that followed, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed strenuously denied having killed her, claiming she had run away. It was not until August 2010 that Alisha, the younger sister of Shafilea was arrested by the police on charges of organizing a robbery at her parents home that the truth came out. She told police what had happened that evening in 2003 for she and her brother and sisters had been made to watch the entire spectacle.

Justice Roderick Evans summed it up by saying:  “and a truly horrifying feature is that you killed Shafilea in the presence of your other four children”. He added, “you also made your surviving children put forward an account which was intended to hide what you did”.

A truly despicable crime, but not uncommon in the Muslim enclaves of rural Pakistan, and in fact the rest of the Muslim world. In 2011 there were 943 deaths among women associated with ‘honour’ killings in Pakistan alone, and 2010 saw a 47% rise in honour related crimes in the UK, although not necessarily ending in murder, a with a total  of 2283 registered.

This tradition, if you can call it that, goes way back in Muslim history and stems from the fact that the Muslim male is paramount in Muslim society. Women are nothing more than a means to produce more Muslim men, and girls are only tolerated because they are needed to father the next generation of men. For this reason they rank very low in Muslim society, and are nothing more than chattels that must be covered from head to toe and be subservient to men at all times. Any act, by any Muslim woman that goes against this code is deemed to have ‘stained’ the ‘family honour’, and the only way for the family to regain that ‘honour’ is to remove the stain, permanently. This ‘stain’ can be as little as a young girl talking to a boy or even wearing the wrong clothes.

Personally, I find it despicable that such a thing is still allowed in this century and would urge all governments to make an example of parents guilty of such crimes, as has just happened in England. It is time to stamp out this hideous crime, and if necessary, force all those who condone such acts to outlaw them completely. It must start with Muslim clerics who approve, and often encourage such acts, to start telling their people that it is wrong. Governments can only do so much, but they should do what they can.
