Should We Arm The Libyan Rebels?

President Obama has raised the question of whether or not the Coalition should arm the rebels fighting Gaddafi. That I fear is very dangerous ground!

M136 AT4 Light Anti-Tank Weapon

First of all, arm them with what? Modern anti-tank weapons (i.e. missiles)would be a good idea, and perhaps some artillery pieces, maybe even a tank or two, but what then? Do we follow this up with technical experts to teach them how to fire the darned things.

AT4 Anti-Tank Video:

While it is without doubt in the interests of many countries to see Gaddafi gone, the road to achieving that is a slippery slope unless great caution is exercised. The objective of the UN mandate is clear; “Protect civilian lives from aggressive action by Gaddafi’s forces”. Arming the rebels does not, in my view, come under that heading.

The Security Council Votes

That whole scenario would be going way over the top of the UN Resolution, and bring down upon the Coalition severe condemnation from the vultures sitting on the sidelines sharpening their long knives waiting for us to trip up, make no mistake.

The original intention was good, and you can forget all the ‘lefty’ accusations of ‘it’s all about the oil’. The Coalition has now put itself in the position of being on trial, certainly within the Arab world and the African continent.

The Arab League Waits....

The Middle East countries are sitting on the fence waiting to see if the West will (a) stick to the mandate, or (b) meddle in Libyan internal affairs by actively assisting the rebels, and (c) try to enforce democracy afterwards. We are coming very close to the limits of the Mandate and may even already have overstepped them by actively assisting the rebels with the air strikes.

It has become abundantly clear that the Libyan dictator will not go quietly, he will fight to the last man and will have to be removed by force. If he does win, you can bet his vengeance will not only be levelled at the rebels and Benghazi, but also the Western Alliance. He is quite capable of opening his door to al Quada and giving them a base from which to operate.

Rebels In Retreat....Again!

The sad thing is the rebels do not seem capable of winning without more intervention by the Coalition, particularly in light of the reverses they have suffered in recent days.

Rebel Retreat:

 http://www.youtube.com/embed/_rrDAt-ejL4

Apart from the fact they are a ‘rag-tag army’ of civilians without any military training whatsoever, they have no leadership, no chain of command, or coördination of effort. In the long-term, they have little or no chance of success against a properly trained army such as the one that fights for Gaddafi, and no amount of aerial bombardment by the coalition will change that.

I reiterate what I have said in earlier posts, i.e. that the UN resolution came far too late. Had it been granted even one week earlier the situation on the ground could have been much different. But there is ‘no point in crying over spilt milk’ as they say, we must make the best of what we have, which to be honest, is not a lot.

Is He Giving Us Two Fingers?

It remains to be seen what the eventual outcome of the affair will be, but I have a nasty feeling the Alliance will not come out of it ‘smelling like roses’. There is still a lot of work to be done, and a lot of it depends on how far the UN, the Arab League and the African Union are prepared to back NATO and the Alliance in achieving the removal of Gaddafi.

Pampering To Women’s Vanity

Posted in Britain, England, Environment, Europe, Health, Insanity, Old Age Pensioner, Senior Citizen, Teens, UK, USA with tags , , , , , , , , on 29/03/2011 by floroy1942

Oops! Caught Ya!

Women, (bless their little cotton socks) are by their very nature vain creatures, and will spend hours ‘putting on their face’, or in later years, worry constantly about a wrinkle that has suddenly appeared. But hey! A whole industry has evolved to pander to their vanity and anxieties that has made a lot of people MEGA-RICH! Its called the cosmetics industry.

It matters not if you are a successful pop star or actress, its essential to create your own brand of beauty products. Why? Because that’s where the money is!

The Essential ‘Kit’ Of Todays’ Woman

Years ago shops had a small counter that had the usual lipstick, mascara and face powder, while not forgetting the essential perfumes, some of which cost a fortune. Nowadays, we see entire shops full of ‘beauty’ products that will do everything from ‘removing’ your wrinkles to ‘regenerating’ your skin and much more.

Who Could Imagine…The Humble Snail In Your Face!

The latest ‘discovery’ to hit the headlines is a new face cream that will “smooth out wrinkles and nourish the skin”. You might like to try it, except……it’s made with snail slime! I suppose there are those who will just shrug their shoulders and try it, but there could equally be those to whom the idea of smearing snail slime on the face is obnoxious. Ah well! I guess it all depends on how desperate you really are.

Its a fact that the industry is always finding new and ‘miraculous’ ingredients for their products, like snake venom, crystals extracted from semen (sperm), cocoa, coffee, Coca Cola (oh no! sorry, they haven’t discovered that one yet!). Many types of plant, from cabbage to exotic jungle vegetation contain, according to the industry, that ‘essential’ ingredient to keep our skin looking like we are forever sixteen! Yeah Right! The only reason they do it is to stay ahead of the competition, and I might add, has anyone thought about the chemicals that go into making these products? No? I thought not!

Skin Whitening? Really??

After the initial explosion of these products onto the market, the companies have become very sly. Now you don’t have one ‘moisturizer’ or anti-wrinkle cream, but a ‘day’ cream and a ‘night’ cream. So now the con has gone a step further by making it essential to buy two bottles of an almost identical product. And don’t forget, these items are not cheap!

The prices charged for beauty products nowadays has gone right off the scale, and I shudder each time my wife looks in the window of a beauty shop. We still have the old ‘small tube in a big box’ trick that is meant to dupe the customer into thinking they are getting more than they really are. That certainly hasn’t gone away, and no amount of government advertising standards legislation seems capable of stopping it.

Cellulite Cream…It Works?

We are bombarded with advertising posters of young women who have years ahead of them before they see a wrinkle, telling us we should use so-and-so cream to prevent them. The same goes for all those posters for anti-cellulite creams. All the photo’s are carefully airbrushed with a well known computer programme to erase even the tiniest blemish to enforce the message. I imagine the same is done with the ‘before and after’ photo’s concerning anti-wrinkle creams. Its all a massive sham and con-job in my opinion.

It is also interesting to note that at the bottom of the screen during product TV adverts you often see e.g. 90% of 125 women agree. I bet few have ever taken the trouble to work that one out, but for your information the answer is 112.5 women! This begs the question, how does half a woman agree with the claims made by the product? Yes! Tricky that one!

Pansy!

The sad thing is, these products are now being aimed at young men who are becoming just as vain as the women! Like their female counterparts, men are being fed an ever-increasing range of products that ‘will’, for example, hide the bags under the eyes after a night of boozing, or give you skin like a baby. Bah! Humbug! Whatever happened to old adage of growing old gracefully?

Both women, and now young men, have become so obsessed with their looks they will spend a fortune on anything they think may take six months off their age. A look in the mirror and it’s; “Oh No! I have a small wrinkle, where’s my wallet?”

Future Customer?

Future Customer?

I freely admit that some products do have a limited effect.Certain creams help women get rid of unsightly cellulite for example, but to maintain any benefits they have to continue using the product or the skin reverts to normal. I know that for it happened to my wife. When you consider that cellulite creams cost between 50 and 120 it becomes an expensive business.

Bless You Ma’am, But I Think Its Too Late

I for one do not believe the hype that you can get rid of wrinkles simply by smearing a cream on your face. They are a natural part of the aging process and are something we have to accept. No matter how good these products are supposed to be, I can never see the day coming when old age pensioners are all walking around looking like 30 somethings. Just imagine the hassle of having to prove your age before you can collect your pension, and as for getting a bus pass….!

God Bless you all Ladies we love you dearly!

‘Car-less’ Cities By 2050? A New EU Plan.

Posted in Britain, England, Environment, Europe, Germany, Government Spending, Modern World, Spain, Traffic, Travel, UK with tags , , , , , , , , on 28/03/2011 by floroy1942

A possible solution to the problem of cars in city centres has been put forward in the latest report from the European Commission. They suggest that all petrol and diesel cars should be banned from european cities by the year 2050. This would suggest that if you have an all-electric car there should be plenty of parking spaces!

Paris Traffic Madness!

http://www.youtube.com/embed/TTtsmBYIShATransport

Siim Kallas - A Man Of Vision?

Commissioner Siim Kallas is of the opinion that apart from banning these cars in cities, he would like to see what he calls, ‘middle-distance’ journeys moved from road to rail. He states that all journeys of more than +/- 186 miles could be made by train instead of by car.

The Commissioner also advocates a 40% reduction in shipping emissions, which he suggests when combined with the saving by vehicles, would reduce carbon emissions by around 60% and reduce our dependence on oil. Without doubt, a lofty target but is it possible? Hmmm! Doubtful!

London Traffic:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/XRh6_D3hslA

The only trouble is, it would take an unprecedented amount of coöperation from governments (something they have never gotten used to), and a major shift in public behaviour (which I doubt will ever happen). At the moment, to travel by train, or even bus, costs an arm and a leg so that is the first hurdle. Second is the fact that with the buses in particular, they don’t pick you up at your door and drop you outside your favourite shop or  bar, and most irritatingly, after a night out they stop running about an hour before you need to journey home. Typical!

People have an aversion to using their legs these days, a fact you can see every day by the lazy so-and-so’s who double park three car lengths from an empty slot or block an exit: “I’ll only be a minute” says he/she! There is little doubt that for many legs are going out of fashion. This has led, inevitably, to our current dependence on the car.

Rome Traffic:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/PyqWPdXZCpc

Damn! Damn! A Jam!

So, first things first! To begin with, bus and train companies would have to lower their fares to such an extent that the general public find it cheaper to use these forms of transport than their own car. It really is a basic economic exercise, if you increase the turnover you can make the same profit achieved by high prices (i.e. 2×50 = 100/10×10 = 100). The only problem with this scenario is that it takes time to generate the numbers that compensate for the reduced prices. During this period it is most likely bus companies would be running at a loss until people took up the offer. Dangerous ground!

Secondly, the logistics surrounding bus routes and train stops would be a major headache in more ways than one. Let us deal with buses first. How do you plan your bus routes, not only through the city, but more importantly the residential areas outside the centre to maximise passenger pickup? If someone lives half a mile from the nearest bus stop they will use the car. Logical! The same goes for anyone who has a long walk to the office once in the city, as few people like to change buses to get to their destination.

In answer to this problem, many major cities like London and Paris have a Metro system which compliments the buses very well, so for this plan to go ahead a massive investment in such a system would be necessary. Whoops! Now we are talking about spending money!

Other cities have tram systems that serve the inner city quite well, but how far would you want to extend the tram network, and how costly would it be?

Bucharest Traffic:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/rzV1LLXOZcc

With train services we have a similar problem. If a train stops at every station to provide the necessary links to the city, the journey becomes intolerably long. If the train does not stop at every station many would-be passengers will use the car. In this day and age, many people travel 30 to 50 miles to work each day, a result of people wishing to live outside the city in surrounding towns and villages. It is a fact that many City of London workers actually live in Northern France and travel daily to work on the Eurostar!

Eurostar

The one thing the report has failed to mention, which has surprised me somewhat, is getting the long distance trucks off the road. Huge 25 ton HGV’s are travelling the length and breadth of Europe 24 hours a day (I hate 24/7) and yet they seem to have been overlooked in the study. It would without a doubt be a huge relief to see all these 16/18 wheel monsters disappear off our motorways, which is something I covered in a post a couple of years ago:

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2009/12/05/truck-rail-a-way-to-beat-congestion/

There is little doubt such a move would certainly prompt people into buying electric cars for their daily commute into the city, but therein lies a beast waiting to pounce. Should we see a predominance of electric vehicles, which by necessity will be in their tens of thousands for every major city in Europe, we will without doubt run out of power generating capacity, i.e. electricity!

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2011/01/15/electric-cars-a-viable-alternative/

I must admit, I think the basic plan has many good points and may be some sort of blueprint for the future, but its implementation will be a major headache for governments across the continent, and it will probably never leave the drawing board.

Pity, for at some time in the future the oil will start to run out and then only the mega-rich will be able to afford the luxury of a car. For the rest of us it will gather dust in the garage and become a fading memory of the good times.

Update 28/03/2011 1900hrs:

Norman Baker Says: On 'Yer' Bike!

Since posting this article more information has come to light via the BBC. It would seem that although this is only a proposal, it has been rejected ‘out of hand’ by the UK Transport Minister Norman Baker who said: “We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas.” In his rejection he said that the EU Commission should not be involved in “individual cities transport choices”. He stated that the UK is aiming to reduce carbon emissions by investing £400m to support electric cars (oops), and by promoting walking and cycling! (Wow Norman, that’ll certainly help!!!)

This attitude doesn’t surprise me, because british politicians have never been able to decide if they want to be ‘in’ Europe or not. Whatever comes out of Strasburg or Brussells is usually met with scepticism and distrust, mainly due to the the negative spin put on it by the British press. It never ceases to amaze me that the idea of a united Europe works for everyone except the bloody British!

The TUC Demonstration And The Rogue Element

Thugs On The Rampage - Again!

So once again the thugs rule the streets of London and tarnish what is left of Britain’s reputation in the world. Again we see wanton destruction just for the sake of it by a semi-literate minority who have messed up their own lives and cannot stand that other people have more than they do. I sometimes think we are regressing back into the stone age rather than moving away from it.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/rLRMjitlP8I

What The Police Have Accept - But Why?

Meanwhile the police are once again in the firing line, and according to the great unwashed, can’t seem to do anything right. It makes me sad to see what is happening in our once great country, and I am glad I no longer live there. When I retired from NATO I was asked by many of my colleagues if I would return to England, and to that I gave a resounding NO!

To be honest, with the way the country has declined over the past fifteen years or so, wild horses couldn’t drag me back.

Ever since the last Labour government came to power I have witnessed, albeit from afar, the steady destruction of our culture, a soaring (youth) crime rate, and the steady decline of our social services into waste, inefficiency and abuse. I have seen the rise of busybodies who can change laws at a whim to promote fringe groups, who in a normal society would not even have a ‘look in’. In short, I have seen our nation torn apart from the inside!

We have been flooded with immigrants we didn’t want thanks to Tony Blair and his idea of multiculturalism, we have seen enormous power handed to groups like the ‘Human Rights Brigade’, the ‘Racial Discrimination and Religious Rights Loonies’ who appear hell bent on turning the country over to the criminals and immigrants.

And now to top all that, we have gangs of thugs running rampant through the streets of our capital smashing everything in sight, and defacing everything they cannot break. Is it any wonder I don’t want to live there any more?

Peaceful Demonstration

I do applaud the 400,000 or so who made their protest peacefully, and to be sure, the discontent was down to 2 or 3 hundred mal-adjusted youth who used the event as an opportunity to go on the rampage. But as with all protests in the past, these people come out of the woodwork on just such an occasion to vent their fury at how ‘unfair’ life has been to them. Few seem to care that ‘you only get out of life what you put in’, but that is typical of today’s youth who think life owes them a good living simply because they exist!

http://www.youtube.com/embed/uDu3yr-MlvY

The basic principle of working hard for a good standard of living went out when Labour got in, and now they all think life is a free ride and they need to do nothing to earn it. These days they can live off benefits and do not need to work.

I have often gone into the reasons for this attitude among todays youth in previous posts.

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/young-people-today-unemployable/

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2010/06/24/are-you-doing-your-best-for-your-child/

Dye Spray Works!

All this does not detract from the fact that in situations like those in London yesterday, the police are hampered by what they are allowed to do to end this wanton destruction. For example, why are the police not allowed to use dye sprays or water cannon in such situations. Dye sprays cover the person on the receiving end with a colour marking that lasts for days and would surely help the police in rounding up these urban terrorists at their leisure. There is nothing more efficient at making an unruly crowd move on than a water cannon, used I might add to such good effect by German police! So why not here??????

The sons of bitches who cause all the problems have several weapons in their arsenal, chief among them yesterday was light bulbs filled with ammonia!!! Do you have any idea what ammonia will do to the eyes???? Yet the police had to face attacks with these weapons, plus paint balls, bottles and stones.

As a civilised human being, I have to ask you; Is that right??? Is this what YOU think our police deserve??? I sure as hell don’t! Don’t waste your sympathy on the tow-rags who set out to destroy parts of London and threatened innocent tourists, save it for the poor sods who have to try and contain them.

From the following video sequence it is clear that some rioters were actually encouraged by paparazzi photographers who surrounded them at every turn. You can hear at least one saying “Go on smash it in!”.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/57omOc-35HQ

Phew! I’m glad I got that off my chest! But seriously folks, unless you are born rich you cannot have everything. You have to get an education and work hard to advance yourself in today’s world, and believe me, nothing else will work – unless you’re lucky enough to win the lottery – some hopes! Too many people are looking for a free ride in todays’ society and who more so than benefit cheats who are costing the country billions every year.

After all the ‘slack’ years with Labour its time our social system and benefits budget were given a good scrutiny to stop people like those I wrote about some time ago:

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/land-of-the-parasites/

Darned Good Idea!

Can you honestly blame the current government for wanting to weed out these parasites and get them earning a living instead of sponging off the state? I think its high time! The amount of wastage in public services has gone through the roof, and where money should be going to those that need it, it is being frittered away. A prime example is the tens of thousands of pounds it will cost to repair, yet again, the damage caused by a discontented few.

All our social services are failing rapidly, everything from the education system, through the NHS and benefits system as I wrote only yesterday:

https://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/miliband-sings-the-labour-song-at-the-london-demo/

Instead of exacerbating the situation with pure unadulterated political profiteering like we saw from Ed Miliband yesterday, its time people realized that the situation will only get better if everyone works together to make the pain as short lived as possible.

Its time for decent people to stop the belly aching and start working together to get the country back on its feet. Its what my generation did in times of crisis.  Wow! I guess I blew off some steam with this one! I hope you don’t mind! I would be interested to hear your views.

Miliband Sings The Labour Song At The London Demo!

Posted in Benefits, Britain, Budget Cuts, Demonstration, Elections, England, English Schools, Government, Government Spending, Health, Immigrants, MP's, Parliament, UK with tags , , , , , , , , on 27/03/2011 by floroy1942

I never cease to be amazed at the gullibility of the British voting public. An estimated 400,000 people came out in London yesterday to protest at the government cuts to services, and once again a labour leader sang the same old song of labour virtue. This time it was Ed Miliband who told the crowd that Labour was with them and the government was wrong. From the cheers it would seem everyone has forgotten already that it was Labour that got us into this mess in the first place.

Empty Pockets!

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence should know that you cannot spend money you haven’t got without eventually having to pay for it. That is exactly what Labour did during their period in power and now its time to pay the piper. It’s always the same old story in British politics where one government spends like there is no tomorrow just to be popular with the voters, and when the next one comes along and tries to sort out the mess they are labelled the bad guys!

Two Men With A Big Headache

I can guess that at the next election everyone will vote Labour and bring in another spending spree that we cannot afford, and once again the Conservatives will be caned for trying to sort out the mess. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a Conservative, I owe allegiance to no political party, but it seems to me that every time Labour goes off the rails the Tories have to try the impossible, i.e. clean up the mess and still get re-elected.

Protest Video:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/E6YN60HjBVs

Whoever has to clean up the economic debacle that is Labour’s legacy will have a rough ride, even more so at this time in our history because of the recession following the banking crisis. Without doubt, unpopular decisions will have to be made, and it is certain that if we as a country wish to survive this period, we will all have to tighten our belts. I am sure the Cameron/Clegg duo will do their best, but the problem is huge, make no mistake!

For more than a decade Labour were throwing money right left and centre in their efforts to remain in power, and they succeeded. Now we have to pay for it.

TUC Poster

The biggest mistake they made, was to try and turn our country into a multicultural society by bringing in hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year, all of whom were given handouts for everything from food to extravagant housing, all paid for by the tax payer. And what about all the extra expenses incurred by local government services in an effort to find them all housing, food and jobs?

As we have found out over the years, multiculturalism doesn’t work! All it has done is put a massive burden on the tax payer and driven the country into debt. Who can guess how many tens of billions were thrown away on this futile plan which is still costing us dearly, even today?

The banking crisis was another thing that cost us dear. The writing was on the wall for all to see ahead of time, but unfortunately ‘Jolly’ Gordon Brown had forgotten how to read!!!

What the people of Britain seem to forget is that it is not the current governments fault we are having to take such measures, it is the likes of the that idiot Miliband who so enjoyed playing to the crowd yesterday.

Miliband Speech to the crowd:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/BFvIti0WuQI

"So How Are You Going To Fix Things Ed?" "Er....Pass".

I, as well as several commentators, picked up on the fact that while the ‘Labour cockerel’ was crowing, he was careful not to mention how Labour would handle the crisis if they were in power. But there again, at times like these they never have! All he could say was ‘they would spread the recovery over more years’. For that you can read: they would go back to their old ways and never get it sorted.

It is unfortunate there is a necessity of some urgency in getting the economy back on its feet, for the longer we flounder in the deep end, the harder it is to climb out. Something ‘Dear Eddie’ needs to learn.

I will be the first to agree that the government does not have everything right, and there may be better ways of getting the economy back on its feet, but you have to admit, that our various social services are huge money wasters, and always have been.

Successive governments have been pouring money into our education system, but the kids just leave school dumber. They pour money into the national health system and more patients contract deadly illnesses in hospital than ever before. They pour money into social services and we now have entire families that have lived their whole lives on welfare of one kind or another. Unfortunately, these are problems that take time to tackle, but the government needs swift action to get things back on track before things get worse.

"Yes! I did say no more boom and bust, and I meant it!"

If the British voter was to take a dispassionate look at the situation as a whole, I would hope they could see that the current measures are necessary and it is far better to have one or two years of austerity so that growth can begin, rather than the Labour alternative of more of the same! Labour will never solve the current crisis, because in the past they never have, and what is more, they never will! What was Gordon Brown’s proud boast when he was Chancellor: No more boom and bust! Well, this time Labour ‘bust’ us as never before!

Gordon Brown on ‘Boom and Bust”:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/OU_fzCpwrNc

Tighten your belts a notch people and let the government do its job before its too late. Give them a chance to go after the free-loaders and parasites that live off the backs of hard working people. I am sure they will also ween out all the money-wasting problems in national and local government if we give them a chance. It all takes time!

African Countries Dare To Criticise Libya Action: Bloody Cheek!

Posted in Arab, Britain, England, Europe, Muslim, Security Council, UK, UN, United Nations, USA with tags , , , , , , , , , , on 22/03/2011 by floroy1942

The old saying: “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” comes to mind when I look at the latest news about Libya. It seems that after their initial success in getting western nations to solve what is after all an Arab, and by extension an African problem, now members of the African Union are ‘jumping on the bandwagon’ to criticise the way we are handling the situation.

Un Resolution 1973

Firstly, the African Union voted for Resolution 1973 in the United Nations which allows for “all necessary action to secure the no-fly zone”, and secondly, if they did not trust the west to do the job right, why didn’t they do it themselves?

Meddling! So Why Didn't You Do Something?

It’s true what they say you know: ‘You can’t please all the people all the time’, but I do find it extremely petty of the African nations; Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia and Nigeria, whose leaders have come out in open criticism of the way the no-fly zone is being enforced.  Namibia’s President Hifikepunye Pohamba was even audacious enough to suggest that the coalition bombing was “meddling in the internal affairs of Africa”.

Zuma - Strong Words

Mr. Zuma of South Africa went even further, saying that all military action should stop and a ceasefire be sought for he: “rejected any foreign intervention, whatever its form”. Funny that, coming from a man who agreed to Resolution 1973!!!

Some African politicians, like Odein Ajumogobia the Nigerian Foreign Minister, have argued why the western powers ‘chose to intervene in Libya and not for example, in Bahrain or Ivory Coast’? The answer is quite simple; We were not asked!!!

The western nations, despite what some people like to think, are not the worlds policemen and it is up to individual countries to solve their own internal problems. However, if the United Nations gets involved because a population is being massacred by a madman, and the Arab League requests action, we will do all we can to help. I for sure have not heard of any Arab nation requesting UN help with the protests in Bahrain. Have you?

The Union of African States

It makes me sick to hear the continual whining of these spineless politicians who leave it to western nations to ‘carry the load’ at their behest, and when we do, can’t wait to sharpen their long knives. In my opinion, if you don’t have the courage of your convictions, stay out of politics!

When this is all over, I have the nasty feeling that the coalition nations are once again going to be crapped upon from a great height by the nations that should by rights be grateful that we are sorting out this problem, i.e. The Arab League and the African Union members.

President Sarkozy

During the interminable weeks the UN was discussing the issue, and people were dying on the ground I might add, neither the African Union nor Arab League raised a finger to help the people of Libya. All they could do was sit around the table wringing their hands and mumbling into their coffee cups! Without the persistence of people like Nicholas Sarkozy (France) and David Cameron (UK) they would still be at it.

Gaddafi - Not Quite Got All His Marbles?

There should be little doubt in anyone’s mind that had Gaddafi been able to finish the job, there would have followed a massacre of anyone even remotely connected with the revolution. He is well-known as being a little ‘off balance’, and his rambling speeches during the crisis gave a good idea as to his intentions.

Without a doubt, when the dust finally settles, the people of Libya will be well within their rights to ask the Arab and African nations why they did not help them much sooner.

I sometimes think the world would be better off without politicians!

Roy.

Libya, The Arab League and Double Standards!

Posted in Arab, Britain, England, Europe, Muslim, UK, UN, United Nations, USA with tags , , , , , , , , on 20/03/2011 by floroy1942

Face Saving?

I guess I should not be surprised that the Arab League is now trying to worm out of its complicity in the current Libyan crisis. I have just read with disbelief a statement by the League Secretary General, Amr Moussa that he is calling for an emergency meeting of the group saying that the actions of the coalition are not what was intended when they agreed to the action. I quote:“What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone, and what we want is the protection of civilians and not the bombardment of more civilians.” It seems to me they are now trying to back out of the agreement they made with the UN Security Council!

It was after all they who asked for such action to be taken, but it is worthy to note that the United Arab Emirates is the only country in the block to be actively taking part. Each of the major arab nations, like Saudi Arabia, Syria and Jordan have strong air forces that could easily have done the job on their own, but not one of them has made a move to assist.

The UAE-At Least An Honest Arab Nation

Now they are trying to backtrack on their diplomatic involvement and before you know it, they will be accusing the coalition of aggression, or at least interference in arab affairs. I have to say I find their attitude both spineless and disgusting.

It would seem they expected the no-fly zone to be enforced without any military action whatsoever, and if that is the case I would ask them how it could be done.

RAF Tornados

Weeks ago US Secretary of Defence, Robert Gates, made it quite clear that the only way to safely enforce a no-fly zone was for the Libyan anti-air defences to be knocked out prior to overflights. Personally, I can think of no other way.

I can understand they do not want foreign troops on Libyan soil and that should not be necessary, but it is impossible to achieve a no-fly zone without some form of military action. Considering that the arab nations have left it up to the west to do their dirty work for them, I would have at least expected a grudging ‘Thank You’ considering it is our pilots that are being put in harms way on their behalf. Instead, all we get is the proverbial ‘knife in the back’, so typically arab.

AWACS - Ensuring Compliance

We cannot for sure know this, but it is possible they are now starting to get unrest among the arab nations for the fact they requested western assistance in this problem, and are now trying to excuse their complicity by proclaiming: “This is not what we meant…..But we didn’t mean…” etc etc. Well gentlemen, if you call for a spade, you get a spade and that’s that!

Further, how dare he suggest the coalition is bombing civilians! I can only presume he has been listening to the Gaddafi propaganda machine. The west has ‘stepped up to the plate’ and offered to help defend civilians against the onslaught of Gaddafi’s forces, and I must say that is more than the majority of arab nations have done. Instead of backtracking from their decision they should be actively assisting in the efforts.

Finally I have to say direct to Mr. Amr Moussa: If you don’t like the way the west is carrying out YOUR request – DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!

I await further developments with bated breath!

Roy.
