Death Knell For Plastic Bags?

Ever since the common plastic shopping bag was first introduced en masse by high street stores and supermarkets in the mid-1970’s, it has taken a firm grip on our lives and environment.

The 'Essential' Plastic Shopping Bag

Now, the Italian government has announced an outright ban on these everyday items from tomorrow, January 1st, and although it is the first European country to do so, it is not the first world-wide. Eritrea, Rwanda and Somalia banned them as far back as 2005, followed by Tanzania a year later. Strange that it should be African nations that first took positive action against this danger to our environment!

Bag Production - A Major Industry

It is not until you get into numbers that the impact of these shopping aids becomes apparent. The Italian people for example use a staggering 20 billion bags a year, which is about 300 per person. Across Europe the estimate is 100 billion! In 2008, when China introduced a levy for plastic bags, they were using 3 billion a day!

While many countries have over the years introduced a surcharge on plastic shopping bags in an effort to cut consumption, it has been of little use in curbing our habits. There seems little doubt that only an outright ban such as in Italy will work, and it is up to other countries to follow suit. Italian shoppers will now have to use bio-degradable, cloth or paper bags.

Plastic In The City Of Naples

Some of the more developed nations have introduced recycling as the answer to the plastic menace, and although some relief has been seen in the number of plastic bags in city dumps, it has had minimal effect overall. When you consider it, we even add to the mountain by putting all our rubbish in plastic sacks anyway!

There is little doubt that even the very disposal of plastic bags costs a huge amount of energy. According to the Italian environmental organization Legambiente, the ban on bags will reduce the CO2 emissions for Italy by 180,000 tonnes a year.

The Plastic Raw Material

Plastic, as we all know is a by-product of oil, and in 2007 it was estimated that from the world’s oil production of around 84,5 million barrels a year, some 4% goes into the production of all types of plastic. While this may seem an insignificant amount, it should not be forgotten that another 4% is used in the energy required to produce the final product.

Oil, like many other sources of power, will run out eventually as the planets reserves are used up. At the current state of man’s development, life as we know it would cease entirely without oil and its by-products.

As you read this, take just a second and think about all the devices in your home that have plastic parts and would cease to function without it. Once having established that, spread your mind wider and look outside your immediate environment at all the things in your town or city that cannot work without plastic.

Also The Cost Of Plastic Production

We as a race, would be thrown back to the time of the horse and our own two feet, to say nothing of candles for light and open fire for heat. It’s scary to say the least

A Plastic Bags Best Friend - The Supermarket

When shopping, my wife and I always end up with at least five or six bags from the local supermarket, even though we always ask the cashier to pack the items into as few bags as possible. Like many supermarkets, they are on special hooks that allow the cashier to operate as quickly as possible, and it is very common for them to exit the system containing only one or two items.

Maybe Not Quite As Strong - But Otherwise.....

Prior to the introduction of the plastic shopping bag, people used paper carrier bags which by their very nature were biodegradable. Now, we poison the earth and oceans with an item that does not degrade, and becomes toxic. Discarded plastic will be with us for centuries, and there is not much we can do about it.

Today we seem incapable of living without this lowly item, but as the discovery of the Pacific Plastic Island clearly shows, we must change our habits. The size of a large country, it is reservedly estimated to contain 100 million tons of floating plastic. I refer you to one of my previous blogs on the subject.

When We And Our Children Are Dead, It Will Still Be Here!

While doing research for this article I came across an interesting video that describes the life of a plastic shopping bag. It was made by Ramin Bahrami and although somewhat romanticised, gives some insight into the life of a shopping bag made of plastic.

http://futurestates.tv/episodes/plastic-bag

With the exception of a few countries where a proportion is recycled, they all end up in rubbish tips, and sadly, in the oceans of the world. Perhaps it is time for this environmental problem to be handled by the United Nations, who could if they can agree, do something positive for our planet by introducing a world-wide ban on these items.

Guaranteed Not Part Of A Six-Pack

Before I finish let me highlight the tragic effects of our plastic rubbish is having on the animal population of our planet.

Nice Scarf? Not Really. Just Another Creature Suffering.

There is evidence enough of the cruel way in which many birds and animals die trapped in our plastic garbage. If we saw it with our own eyes we would call it sadistic, but never think about what can happen each time we throw away a plastic bag or six pack holder. So far as the latter is concerned, I always snip open each circle with the scissors before discarding it.

The cost to the environment is incalculable, but future generations will have to deal with our excesses of today.

What Price the Annual ‘Sales’?

Posted in Britain, England, Europe, Germany, Government, Modern World, Spain, UK, USA with tags , , , , , on 26/12/2010 by floroy1942

I will be the first to admit that I am no economist, but it seems to me the word ‘Sale’ has lost it’s meaning in the retail business. With Christmas over, many people look forward to the January Sales as the next highlight in their lives, but is all as it appears?

Maybe They Are Having A Sale?

I doubt it, for as the ‘Sale’ and ‘Discount’ sign seem to be an everyday feature of shopping these days, it makes me wonder if they are true.

70% - Really?

Daily we see posters in shop windows lauding 25%, 50% and even 75% discounts on the goods displayed, and if that is the case, how do these retailers make a profit?

La Canada - Marbella

Here in Marbella on the Costa del Sol, (Some call it ‘Costa Plenty’) Spain, the local shopping centre stores have been full of discount posters of up to 75%, so if the retailer is selling an item to you for just 25% of the normal price, he won’t stay in business for long!

There is no way they are offering us goods at a loss for they would be bankrupt in no time flat, so that leaves us with the only alternative, the discount is not as high as we are led to believe. In other words, it’s a scam to get customers in the shops.

Me First!

There is nothing like a ‘Sale’ sign to get shoppers excited and falling over themselves to get in first for the best bargains. At some major stores in London for example, people queue all night to be the first through the door on January 1st.

Let Me In. Let Me In!

The big ‘50% Sale’ signs in the window are like a magnet to shoppers, and people enter in the hope of finding something they do not really need, just because they are getting the item at half price, or so they believe. Read the small print and you will always see the ‘Up To’ on every discount advertisement. In fact of law, retailers need only have a single item discounted in their stores, which then entitles them to put up the large ‘Sale’ posters. To me it smacks of a monumental scam that few people seem to recognise.

It is true that major stores do offer genuine bargains in the January sales, for the simple reason they wish to be rid of the stock left over from the pre-Christmas rush to make way for new lines. In this case they may drop the price to near ‘cost’ just to be rid of it, but sell items at a huge loss, never! The post-Christmas, or January sales are perhaps the one time a year when all, or most ‘Sales’ can be considered genuine, but the rest leave me with a huge doubt.

Amazing! If It Were True.

For the rest of the year I don’t put much faith in the signs. I believe the ‘original price’ is grossly marked up to give shoppers the impression they are getting a real bargain when paying 50%. It could be true that the retailer will drop his profit margin slightly and compensate by increasing his turn-over, but he will not sell to you at a loss to himself all year round.

The price of any item is set at the cost to the retailer, including staff salaries, site rental, utilities etc., plus a profit margin. A 50% or 75% discount would therefore mean he is selling at below cost price and not compensating for staff salaries and so forth. This is an economic impossibility.

Come Back Next Year and It's Still Closing Down

Another way shop keepers pull the wool over our eyes is the ‘Closing Down Sale’. Obviously some are genuine, especially in the current economic crisis, but how many times have you seen such signs and gone back a year later to see the shop still there, and probably with the same signs in the window? Other offers are ‘buy one get one free’ or ‘three for two’ , etc.

When I lived in Holland there was a furniture maker who had the ‘Everything Must Go’ and ‘Closing Down Sale’ signs up for more than five years. It must have taken him a long time to get rid of his stock, but I’ll bet he’s still there!

There is little doubt that all is not what it seems on the High Street these days, and it’s a question of shopper beware. I think it is high time governments stepped in with more regulation for the Retail Sector, for there is little doubt things have got well out of hand.

A Much Over-Used Word These Days

The words ‘Sale’ and “Discount’ have gone the same way as the word ‘Quality’, and have so little truth in them that they may as well be removed from the dictionary.

The “Power’ Drug

Posted in Ahmadinajad, Elections, Free Speech, Government, Haiti, Health, Human Rights, Insanity, Iran, Modern World, MP's, North Korea, President, Riot, Somaila, UN, United Nations with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 19/12/2010 by floroy1942

...and you will do as I say, or else!

History has shown us time and again the steps some power-hungry people will take to consolidate their grip on power. One only has to go back to the Second World War and look at the profiles of men like Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin, to find out what some men are capable of in the their quest to remain in control of a country and its people. Today is no different, even though the tactics used by some have changed.

Stalin - The Russian Butcher

Just as in the past, repression of free speech and all dissension against them is used by many, but today the approach by others is more subtle. Voting by the people for their leaders has been a common practice for many years, but these days one can no longer rely on this democratic process.

In recent years, country after country around the world has been embroiled in dispute, and even civil war, after so-called free elections. Famous among these are Zimbabwe, Iran, Myanmar, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and so the list goes on.

Mugabe - His Countries Assassin.

In many countries like Zimbabwe and North Korea, dissension is a thing of the past, for any word uttered against the leader means instant death. President Mugabe hit the world headlines during the last general election in 2008 when he actually lost to the opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Zanu Victims

Prior to the next round of voting, Mugabe supporters began a reign of terror, carried out mainly by his ZANU party members, who roamed the streets killing, or chopping off the limbs of opposition supporters with machetes.

It was diplomatic pressure from the rest of the world that finally forced Mugabe to accept a supposed power-sharing deal with his opponent Norman Tsvangari, who became Prime Minister. There is little doubt however that the true power remained in the hands of the president.  Lately it has been announced that the deal, which is due for review in February next year, will be scrapped by Mugabe.

Kim Jong-il the Death Merchant.

North Korea, like China, is a totalitarian regime with all the power in the hands of Kim Jong-il who took over from his father Kim Jong-sung when he died in 1994. Even a careless word that is overheard will lead to a lengthy, if not life time period of detention in the infamous labour camps which have been likened to the concentration camps of the Nazi’s.

The Opposition in a Cage - Suu Kyi

Myanmar (Burma) by contrast, solved the opposition problem by annulling the 1990 election in which the National League for Democracy under Aung San Suu Kyi won an overwhelming victory. The military junta placed Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest where she has spent the greater part of the time since 1990 despite international calls for her release.

Currently, we have Haiti and the Ivory Coast in turmoil because of ‘rigged’ elections.

The problem in Ivory Coast is so severe, that it would seem civil war is imminent. Two contenders for the leadership, and now two separate leaders, each with their own ‘government’ vying for power over the whole country which is currently split North/South. The United Nations have told the ‘out-going’ president, Laurent GBagbo that he should stand aside, but to no avail. It would take but a small spark to ignite this tinderbox.

Haiti meanwhile, has its own cross to bear, exacerbated by the fact the country has still not recovered from the devastating earthquake this year, and the following cholera epidemic. But still the politicians vie for power and control.

Chavez - Ambitious Showman

There are also dictators in the making such as Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. After coming to power in 1999 he survived a coup d’etat attempt in 2002 and then set about strengthening his position by removing the requirement under the countries constitution for presidents to serve no more than two terms in office. Since then he has further consolidated his power by taking full control of government.

Lukoshenko - Cementing a Position of Power

The West is also accusing Lukashenko of Belarus of following in the footsteps of Hugo Chavez. In 2004 he also changed the constitution, removing the maximum of two terms for a president. While it seems certain he will once again be voted in as president during the current elections, few doubt that the results have been corrupted.

It makes me wonder why these people are so in love with power, for with power comes huge responsibility.

Cholera Victim - Zimbabwe

If you run a country you are supposed to care for your people by making sure they have jobs, suitable housing, and education. The power mongers it seems, care little for this side of the job. In fact, in countries like Zimbabwe, there is 85% unemployment, rampant cholera, starvation and death. In North Korea there is also widespread starvation and disease.

So what do these megalomaniacs gain from this? They are by rote, extravagantly rich from all the money they siphon off for themselves, they have the power of life and death over the people they govern, and quite often have a significant influence on their neighbouring countries e.g. North/South Korea. They also have political standing in the world, mingling with world leaders and top politicians at many top conferences, and the United Nations at will.

Personally I fail to see the attraction of it all, but there is little doubt many do.

Student Leaders Refuse to Denounce Protest Violence

Posted in Britain, Budget Cuts, Demonstration, England, Free Speech, Government, Human Rights, Insanity, Justice, Modern World, MP's, Old Age Pensioner, Police, Police Complaints, Relationships, Senior Citizen, Teen Violence, Teens, UK with tags , , , , , , on 17/12/2010 by floroy1942

Last Sunday I reported on the student riots in London (Ref: Any Excuse For Thuggery – December 12), and since that time many of my comments have proven correct.

Sure! This guys a student!

The police have since confirmed that the demonstration was infiltrated by a gang of hard-core trouble-makers bent on using the event to cause mayhem.

Once again, as with the G20 demonstration, a storm of criticism has been hurled at the police for ‘inciting violence’ and using ‘excessive force’. Perhaps the policeman should ask the thug to kindly put down the brick he is about to throw through a shop window? It seems no matter what the police do, they are on the losing side.

I Suppose the Police Did This!

However, the one thing that sticks in my craw during the past week is the refusal of student leaders to condemn the violence. In my opinion, if you don’t condemn the violence then you must condone it!

During various interviews with the press and TV, they have restricted themselves to blaming the police for all the violence that occurred, and called for a judicial investigation of police tactics. In other words, its a repeat of what happened after the G20 riots.

These people even had the audacity to suggest that police riot tactics would eventually lead to someone dying. For those of you who may not be familiar with the meaning of the word riot, it means the following: A VIOLENT disturbance of the peace by a crowd. Note the word violent!

The only ones laughing at the moment are the thugs that perpetrated the mayhem in the first place.

Police 'Kettling' Action.

The student leaders were especially vocal about the police tactic known as ‘kettling’ which they use to confine extremely violent demonstrators to a small area, thereby reducing the amount of damage they can cause to property.

Do you really want these ‘towrags’ running wild through the streets, smashing in shop-fronts and setting fire to cars in street after street? Because that is what you will get if the practice of ‘kettling’ is stopped.

And You Want Stab This Man In The Back?

If I were a policeman today and was ordered to attend such a demonstration, I think I would rather report sick, for sick of the whole one-sided affair I would be.

We expect our law enforcement agency to protect our property and safety, and when they do we stab them in the back. We do not, as a nation, deserve our police force, for all we do is treat them as whipping boys when those bent on causing trouble come out of the shadows.

Suppose This Was Your Property?

We have become a country wherein dwells a large number of restless and violent youth who will seek any opportunity to cause trouble, and our only shield against these malcontents is the police force. So why do we treat them the way we do?

I think the answer is clear, they are easy targets!

It is so simple for people like students, many of whom were involved in the trouble, to deflect blame and criticism away from themselves and onto the police. Why? Because the British gutter press loves a good ‘police brutality’ story! Sad to say, everyone falls for it too.

If You Won't Back Him - Who Will?

It is high time the British people got behind the police in our country, and gave them the powers they need to deal properly with the violence when it explodes onto our streets during demonstrations.

I am all for peaceful demonstration, but you tell me when there has been a peaceful one in the past ten years! You won’t find many, perhaps when old age pensioners take to the streets and have a go at the government over pensions. Their idea of violence is perhaps to take a token kick at a rubbish bin along the route.

When The Law Is An Ass!

Posted in Arab, Britain, Children, England, Government, Human Rights, Immigrants, Justice, Modern World, MP's, Muslim, Parenting, Police, Political Correctness, Prison, UK with tags , , , , , , , , on 17/12/2010 by floroy1942

Supposedly, the law is all about justice, but the sad fact is, these days it means very little and is often farcical. This is true of a monumental miscarriage of justice in Britain being discussed at the moment.

Ibrahim - Not Even Remorse

In 2003 a failed Iraqi immigrant ran over a 12 year-old girl on the streets of Blackburn, England, and ran off, leaving her dying, trapped under the wheels of his car. The immigrant, Aso Mohammed Ibrahim, had previously been caught three times driving while being banned and for having no insurance, and was awaiting deportation after a failed bid to remain in the UK.

After the accident, Ibrahim was charged with driving while banned and failing to stop after an accident. He served a four month jail sentence and was released. Unbelievably, he was never charged with manslaughter over the child’s death and got away ‘scot free’ for killing the girl.

Ibrahim had previously entered the country claiming asylum because, being an Iraqi Kurd, he was ‘persecuted’ by Saddam Hussein’s regime. He was due for deportation in December 2009, but after release from prison in 2003 he had met a British woman and got married, having two children with her.

British Justice - Not So Impartial Anymore

As a result of his family status, despite being convicted of a string of offences, including, drugs possession, criminal damage and theft, he will be allowed permanent residence in the UK because his lawyer argued he has a right to family life under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act. To me that is a crock of baloney!

The Bereaved Father Fighting For Justice

The father, Paul Housten, whose only child was mown down by Ibrahim and thereby has no family any more, has been trying for the past seven years to get justice for his daughter, but sadly, the law was not up to the task. Once again we see an immigrant playing the human rights card to his advantage.

I find it inconceivable that he was never brought to trial for the death of the young child, and the sad thing is, he has never shown remorse for the death he caused. All the law seemed interested in was that he had, once again, been driving without a licence and that he fled the scene of the accident. An innocent child died, but her death meant nothing to the legal profession. Anyone who was not an immigrant would have been charged with the young girls death and spent several years in prison.

Amy - The Innocent Victim

There is without doubt one law for native Brits and one for immigrants, and that is to say the least shameful! The laws in Britain are in urgent need of overhaul, because at the moment, they always favour the criminal at the expense of the victim. This has been demonstrated time and again during the last twenty years.

The government has promised a review of the human rights laws in Britain, but I fear as always, they will not go far enough. That terrorists and immigrants can use these laws to escape deportation or even prosecution for crimes committed is appalling. These laws have been usurped and twisted by dubious lawyers time and again in order to get their clients ‘off’, and the only people who can put a stop to it is the government. Are they up to the task? I doubt it!

Roy.

Postscript:

Today the government has issued a statement to say there will be an appeal against the ruling by the Immigration and Asylum Tribunal in this case. PM Cameron has expressed his outrage at the ruling which he says has: “Left me with great anger”. The UK Border Agency will appeal the decision at the Upper Tribunal in the hope of getting a just decision.

Let us hope that eventually, justice will be served.

Crazy? You Couldn’t Make It Up! Series 1 Episode 10

Good Aim Required

One of the funniest stories to hit the news last week concerns a pair of Muslim would-be firebombers who bit off more than they could chew! In May 2008 Amir Ali and a friend tried to petrol bomb a pub in Crawley UK for reasons unknown, when it all went pear shaped. Ali broke the pub window prior to his accomplice throwing the molatov cocktail. Unfortunately the throw was not very accurate and it struck Ali on the back of the head. As the pair fled the scene Ali, dazed from the blow, ran full-tilt straight into a lamp-post. Requiring medical attention he went to the A & E Department at the local hospital which allowed police to link him to the incident. Last week he was sentenced to 8 years. If we have to put up with Muslims attacking us these days its a pity they are not all as inept as these two! I would love to read more news items of would-be suicide bombers blowing themselves up while assembling their bomb!!!

Mogadishu Airport - Not For Tourists!

The customs officials in Mogadishu Somalia were in a quandary this week when their first ‘tourist’ arrived at Mogadishu airport. Mike Spencer Bown, on a round-the-world trip, arrived at the airport on a commercial flight and when asked the purpose of his visit said he was a tourist. As Mogadishu is currently one the most dangerous cities in the world for foreigners, the officials did not believe him. Four times they tried to put him back on the outbound flight and eventually handed him over to the African Union Military Force in the city, simply because they could not believe he was there just for pleasure. “We have never seen people like this man,” Omar Mohamed, an immigration official, said Friday. “He said he was a tourist, we couldn’t believe him. But later on we found he was serious.” He went on; “That makes him the first person to come to Mogadishu only for tourism but unfortunately this is not the right time,” Bown had already visited 160 countries since he sold off his business, and he declared Mogadishu ‘a must’. He actually made it back out of the country alive!!!

You Are Either Too Fat Or You're Having Twins

We all make mistakes but sometimes they are ‘howlers’. Recently, the Norwich University Hospital in Norfolk UK sent a letter to 50 year-old Hilton Plettel that he was pregnant with twins! That Mr. Plettel was flabbergasted is an understatement. An apology was issued by the senior nurse of the hospital, and all Mr. Plettel has to do now is ride the wave of endless jokes aimed his way!!!

I Can't Face Another Appendectomy Without It!

Doctors at the Santa Caterina Hospital in Lecce Southern Italy can’t get through the day without a ‘pick-me-up’, or so it seems. The Director of the hospital is in deep trouble after sending a memo to all doctors asking them to ‘refrain from snorting cocaine’ during working hours. While it seems a fact that some doctors are guilty of the practice, it was deemed incorrect for Giuseppe Di Maria to send out the offending memo. So now he is being raked over the coals and you could still be operated on by a doctor flying on cloud nine!!! Scary!

Try Piecing This Lot Together!

Thankfully, if you happen to put all your money in a shredder by mistake there is someone who can help. This happened to a Taiwanese man called Lin who mistakenly dropped a bag containing T$200,000 (£4,200) into a shredder at his plastic factory. Lucky for him there is a forensic scientist in the Justice Ministry Forensics Department known as the ‘Jigsaw Man’, Lin Hui-Fen. This forensics expert loves puzzles, and after a week of intensive work managed to piece together sufficient shredded money to satisfy the bank that it was genuine and the fortunate Mr. Lin got his money back. I bet the jigsaw man solves the Rubicks Cube in seconds!!!

That’s all for now, But as the crazy stories keep coming, so watch this space. I hope you enjoyed a laugh, I sure did.

Any Excuse For Thuggery? – The Student Riots.

Posted in Britain, Demonstration, England, English Schools, Free Speech, Germany, Government, Insanity, Justice, Modern World, MP's, Parliament, Police, Police Complaints, Prison, Riot, Teen alcohol abuse, Teen Violence, Teens, UK with tags , , , on 12/12/2010 by floroy1942

Last week saw the centre of London turned into a battlefield once again as students rioted in protest over the increase in tuition fees. As usual it turned nasty, with major property damage and an attack on members of the Royal Household.

The Peaceful Part of the Student Demonstration

Any demonstration, organized for whatever purpose in the UK today, is hi-jacked by a criminal element intent on ‘having a go’ at the police, and causing as much damage and destruction as possible just to satisfy their own warped lust for violence.

That there were tens of thousands of peaceful demonstrators at this event is beyond question, but sadly, as usual, it was the criminal element that got into the news.

Among much of the youth in Britain today, there is an underlying current of violence seething just below the surface that finds an outlet when good people take to the streets to protest against something they perceive as wrong. The end result is always the same, a pitched battle with police that escalates into innocent people being caught up in it.

Is This What We Want on Our Streets – Anarchy?

Among a crowd of 100,000 peaceful demonstrators, less than 100 thugs can turn the event into something reminiscent of a war zone in a matter of minutes. It is true to say that many people, initially innocent, start getting aggressive trying to protect one or more of ‘their’ number being arrested by the police, and so it escalates.

What these ‘innocents’ do not seem to understand, is that the person or persons they are trying to defend from the police are there for the express purpose of causing violence, and turning the whole event into a riot.

I am convinced that those responsible for initiating the violence last week have never seen the inside of a university, and probably never even finished secondary school. These are the type of people responsible for much of the thuggery in our towns and cities, and who spend their time selling drugs, getting drunk, stealing cars and anything else that is not nailed down. Most will without doubt become inmates of HM prisons.

Students or Thugs? I Think the Latter!

The police have issued photo’s of those individuals they have been able to identify as troublemakers. If you wish to have no more repeats of last weeks violence and know them, you should turn them in.

It is worth noting one of the comments attached to the following Daily Telegraph video report which reads as follows:

hey kids, lets learn how to kick the shit out of riotpolice:

A) coppers hate it when u splinter, coz they cant manage every splinter group. splinter like fuck!

B) coppers can’t see through there visers and shields if you spray paint in there face!

C) potassium nitrate+suger+naga jolokia (chilli) is your home made C.S gas (strong enough to fend off elephants)

D) thermite (easy to make and not illegal!)

E) petrol bombs, ad oil or styrophome (makes it sticky)

F) wear black

any questions?

It should be obvious to even the most dull among us that considering the atrocious use of the English language the writer is not a student!!! This is a prime example of why you too should back our police force against this rabble instead of complaining when they do the job we, the general public, ask them to do.

YOU Will Have to Pay For the Replacements! – Happy?

Because no-one, least of all their parents, has seen fit to give these malcontents a sense of direction in life they turned to the easy way of making money i.e. crime and violence. I am sure they are hooked on the adrenaline rush they get from destroying things they see they can never have.

There is little doubt that, as in other demonstrations, the mayhem witnessed had nothing whatsoever to do with the increase in tuition fees at universities.

At each successive demonstration more and more violence is aimed at the police, but sad to say, the public in general always sees them as the culprits. After a pitched battle in the city centre, where tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage is done, with scores of policemen as well as demonstrators requiring hospital treatment, the following days headlines trumpet stories of police brutality and heavy-handed tactics. Sorry! But I for one don’t fall for that crop of bullshit!

Maybe This is Why Your Insurance is Sky-High

Throughout history we British have boasted about our ‘Thin Red Line’ holding back hoards attackers, well, now we have the thin blue line and as a nation we should get behind them. During this last demonstration the police tell us their helmet visors were deliberately splashed with paint(Ref. above comment), forcing them to lift them so they could see. As soon as the visor was lifted they were savagely pelted in the face with rocks or billiard balls. Many suffered serious injuries as a result.

But do we hear this action condemned? No of course not, instead everyone is complaining about police attempts to confine the violence and destruction to a small area with a tactic called ‘kettling’. This means the police work to confine the violent demonstrators to a small area and thereby stop them from running wild throughout the centre of London.

It is a very effective tactic for which many shop and business owners should be grateful, for was this not enforced the damage would have been very widespread indeed. Who can tell how many shop fronts and cars would have been destroyed if these people had been free to roam the streets at will.

The sad thing is, instead of praise for confining the acts of destruction, the police were heavily criticised!

For the Police A Hopeless Task

It must seem to many that whatever the police do in such circumstances they cannot win public confidence. I rather think that if I was Chief Constable of London I would keep all my officers off the streets during the next demonstration, and let people see what happens when the thugs are given free rein. Then you will hear the screams of condemnation across the entire country with cries of; why didn’t the police do their job? You can’t have it both ways folks! Either you fully back the police when they try to keep the peace, or you don’t. But if you don’t, then quit moaning when your car, shop or house is vandalised during demonstration violence.

When their hands are constantly tied, and their efforts to maintain order vilified, why should they risk serious injury on our behalf?

The instigators of the violence are well aware of the press reaction after they have had their fun, and know full well that the police will bear the brunt of the blame by supposedly ‘inciting violence’.

Alfie Meadows

This weekend a youth was hit with a police truncheon and later required brain surgery. Needless to say it was banner headlines in the gutter press with cries of police brutality. Yet, no-one, and I repeat no-one, has yet questioned what the situation was prior to the incident, and what caused the policeman to lash out. For all we know the young man may have been about to bash in some policeman’s head with a rock and it was a defensive action. But no! Without any of the facts being presented the police get the blame for brutality. Either way, the young man does have my best wishes for a good recovery, and should it be proven the blow was unjustified the one responsible should be dealt with.

Not a Thug? Then Why The Mask?

Over the last few years our law enforcement body has come under constant attack by demonstrators for their supposed heavy-handed tactics, but in my opinion, if you are bent on violence and destruction “You Reap What You Sow”.

I am sure the organizers planned a peaceful demonstration, but the problem is, it’s practically hopeless trying to prevent it being hi-jacked by the criminal element. It is becoming impossible to separate the thugs from the people who just wish to make their voices heard. Once news spreads of any planned demonstration, those who get their kicks from violence turn up from all over the country relishing the idea of causing mayhem once more.

German Police Water Cannon in Action

I am of the opinion that our police forces should be given the same powers as German police. Violent demonstrations in Germany are usually over quickly, because the police are allowed to use proper containment and crowd dispersal tactics that here would have everyone screaming police brutality.

It is time our police were also allowed  the use of water cannon on the streets of our towns and cities when demonstrations become ugly. The time for pussy-footing around with this bunch of trouble makers should be ended once and for all.

On the Receiving End of Demonstrators Wrath At the Government

The fact that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles got caught up in the violence will I am sure be thoroughly investigated. From the fierceness of the attack one would imagine that Prince Charles was solely responsible for the increase in tuition fees. It is shameful that such acts should be perpetrated against a future king on the streets of London.

It makes me think that Britain as a country has lost its soul and is descending into the dark pit from which it will never emerge. God help us all!

Roy.
